House Seven was decked out in soft oranges and browns. Gentle reds and yellows. The table was shoved up against a wall and dish upon dish of delicious Thanksgiving dinner-bits adorned it. Plates to one side, a pile of cutlery. Feel free to line up and pile your arms high with roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, carrots and green beans, cranberry sauce, sinful gravy. Stuffing. Steamed broccoli. The amount of food would almost be laughable had the guest list not been so long. Chatter abounded.

It was, by all accounts, a fairly casual gathering. No ceremony (Buffy, by this point, was all ceremony'd out after some fiercely dedicated meal-prepping) to stand on and no customs to keep. Just food and friendship. The only thing customary about Buffy Summers would be her delighted, enchanted grin throughout the evening. Very little pleased her more than a social event that was going well.

"Hardly." Maybe. Probably. God forbid he admit he might actually want to spend time with people. "It's more I just don't want them on my back about how I didn't go to their party. I don't know that I want to get on their bad side."

Rogue and Storm? Even Kurt, too. A wee bit scary, those ones.

"...Good for you, either way." A nudge in the ribs.

And he's aiming for a subject change, because he isn't a big fan of talking about how Tony-Stark-might-not-be-the-ass-everyone-thinks-he-is. Shockingly. "So, are there any special slayer traditions I should know about? I don't want you to shank me if I cut my turkey wrong."

"...If you bothered to maybe stop and learn a single thing about Slayerdom, you'd quickly realize that I'm so very far off from anything even remotely like a traditionalist. I'm the Slayer that broke the mold. As for Thanksgiving, though? Any celebration that doesn't involve a giant mystical bear is good with me."

"...Mystical bears." He'd normally assume this is a joke, but he can never be sure with the Slayer.

"Singular, actually. One bear. In...'99."

He's not even drunk yet. She really just said that. "Okay, yeah--you have to explain that one."

"Have to, huh? Not even a please?"

"Yep. You can't just drop something like 'giant mystical bear' into the conversation and just walk away. That's cruel."

"For all you know? I am cruel."

"No, you're not." He says it with quite certainty and honesty. He's seen cruel, and Buffy does not match up.

"You've clearly never spoken to any of my exes."

Buffy stood back, crossing her arms. "Alright. It starts like a lot of these stories start. A construction company was breaking ground on a new project and found more than they bargained for underneath."

"Au contraire. I have spoken to Angel." Whom he doesn't even have a nickname for because that name is a doozy enough. "I don't remember any mention of cruelty, though. Maybe something's slippy my mind."

Considering she had once informed him Sunnydale sat atop hell--literally or metaphorically, he's not quite sure--it isn't difficult to tell where this is going. "Giant mystical bear. Living underground. Question--was he hibernating? Because if you woke him up, I can understand why he might have been mad."

Angel was possibly one of the big exceptions where the cruelty was...well -- a little more evenly balanced between the two exes. But Buffy steered clear.

"He didn't start out as a bear."

"Did he start out as a human? Because if he was human first, I'll be honest--I'll be creeped out. A bit."

"...Well -- he started out as a human spirit. But I'm not sure if that helps to make it more or less creepy."

"--I'll wait until you get to the end of your story to make that call. Go on."

"Right, right. Okay. You know all those myths and legends about Native American burial grounds and hauntings and angry, vengeful spirits?"

A pause -- for dramatic effect! "Sometimes? They're truer than you could ever imagine."

"Sure." Not especially. Folklore was never really his thing. But he'll roll with it.

"So you had a spirit bear. Or something."

"A dear friend disturbed the spirit -- got the brunt of the vengeance -- and the pre-bear spirit attacked our Thanksgiving spread. And then turned into a bear. And not the cuddly kind."
