[He stares away off at something else.]

You wouldn't let anything get in the way in your quest to get your body back, right? Even if it might mean a happy life?

That question doesn't make any sense. For one, it's not my body I'm worried about, it's Al's. For another, getting his body back is the same as finding that happiness. Why should it be one or the other? Why can't it be both?

[avaricious]

... right. Of course. [There's a forced kind of smile as he realizes it was a silly question to ask. He starts to continue on his way.] I'll see you around, Ed.

[Whoa, whoa, that was too weird to just brush off.]

Ling- hang on, what's wrong? What happened?

[avaricious]

[Ling stops. He doesn't look back. After a moment, he answers. Bluntly.]

Ran Fan has decided it was for the best to leave my side so that she can be a better bodyguard. I agreed with her decision.

[Ling glances back over his shoulder.]

It's a complicated matter. I doubt you'd understand.

[Or rather, he doubts Ed would agree. People generally didn't appreciate what all was necessary to become Emperor.]

[Wow, rude.]

Try me.

[avaricious]

[Fine, Ed. You want the truth? Here it is. He turns away again.]

Ran Fan realized her feelings for me are not appropriate as a servant of the Yao Clan. She was right.

That was a landmine he totally just stepped on. Wow.]

Ran Fan has-

[-feelings. For Ling. ...Well of course she does. Why are these things obvious to everyone but him?]

[avaricious]

[As he expected... Ed didn't get it. This was not a matter of what Ran Fan felt or what he felt. It was about who they were.]

My own feelings are not important.

They should be. [He's no expert on love or relationships or any of that stuff - never has been, never will be - but he knows that this emperor gig is a load of crap if you're not allowed to even consider how you feel about somebody.

...Probably shouldn't say that, though.]

A philosopher's stone is only one step towards becoming emperor. What happened in Amestris will be easy compared to what lies ahead. If I were to have feelings for her, I would be sacrificing everything we've worked so hard to achieve. She wouldn't forgive me for that.

So you're seriously gonna do it? You're gonna go home, become the Emperor, get yourself forty different wives and have forty kids you don't even know?

[avaricious]

My intentions are not that simple, Ed. My concern is no longer just for the Yao clan, but for all of Xing.

[automailed]

You didn't really answer the question, though.

[avaricious]

If that's what I have to do, then that's what will happen. I intend to find a better way, but it's not for my own sake, but for the sake of all of Xing. A king cannot selfishly put his own wants and desires before that of his people.

[automailed]

Aren't you supposed to be the greedy one? Why does it have to be one or the other?

[avaricious]

It was easier when I didn't want everything. When I came to your country, I only wanted to save my own clan. I wasn't concerned with the fate of all the other clans. After seeing people from all across Amestris band together, even those who had been enemies before, I realized that Xing couldn't have a leader concerned only with his own clan. I want everything that Xing deserves, but you have to give something up to gain something else. That's equivalent exchange, right?

[automailed]

...Tch... Equivalent Exchange is outdated. [Edward scowls, crossing his arms and glancing away.] I thought it could apply to everything, but... real life isn't just science. People are made of a hell of a lot more than that.

[avaricious]

[... heh, so Ed's moved on beyond that, huh? Giving up his alchemy wasn't just a matter of losing a special power. It was a change in his way of thinking too. He turns back around to face Ed.]

Now that you've seen the end of your journey, what do you intend to do?

[Edward blinks at that, pausing for a moment. He hadn't... really considered that problem in depth. Just fleetingly, when his mind gave him a chance to process more than "oh god we won".]

...I don't know. I can't remember a time when I wasn't an alchemist, and now... it's weird. I mean, I still have alchemy here, but when I go back-

[He shrugs.]

I'll have to think about what I can really do with my life from then on.

You should find a pretty wife. There's nothing stopping you from doing that now. Just make sure she's a good cook too. That's important.
