There're also the ones who run the village wide shifts in here. They're a complex multi-layered entity most people boil down into calling just the "Malnosso" but that's a grave lack of understanding!
menial: (& blank blank)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. We're all about understanding the culture, huh?
godbent: (Whatcha gonna do?)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Kyon. Can you exploit something without understanding it?
menial: (* once again not what i meant)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
['Sure. An example might be, say, Nagato's bogus magic stuff.']

So you understand it? All the experiments and kidnappings and stuff?
godbent: (What's the scouter say?)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I do. Or at least, a big part of it. We're missing a few crucial points through institutionalized ignorance, but that's to be expected of lab rats for the evil Organization.
menial: (* this far and no further)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, why don't you explain that, then?
menial: (% come onnnn)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What possible reason they have to make us randomly fall in love with people.
godbent: (...Except that one time.)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Hm] ...There's two possible answers to this, and one of them's more likely and disturbing. But the other one is that very rarely does the Organization know the exact effect a synthetic shift is going to have on us.
menial: (% yeah yeah.)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What's a "synthetic shift", exactly, then?

...And anyway, it can't be that one in this case if they keep doing it year after year at the same time.
godbent: (Editor in Chief ★ Straight Ahead!)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes, with that one it's the same thing but tweaked slightly. Like for example, the first year I think you needed to make journal contact and this year you didn't. A year ago, it added in the threesome things... but yeah, I understand that objection and that's why I've come up with a Reason B about the Valentines Shift. But-

A Shift is a progressive change in reality. Relating to something physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or all of the above. This world we're in now is full of rampant natural Shifts outside the barrier, but a synthetic Shift is one that someone produces through technology. This barrier is one of the examples, but the "experiments" are another. Basically, they're probing our reactions to different dials on their machines and seeing what they do.
menial: (* life never changes)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
['Of all the people I thought I'd get exposition from, Haruhi was the last. But here I am, listening to her like she's Nagato. With roughly the same level of comprehension.']

Okay. Right. So what's reason B?
godbent: (The Dissociation)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... there's only been two - well, three, but the last one's on the way - babies born from people in this barrier. It's well-documented that dozens of people are born outside of this barrier from people from other worlds, but I bet there's not a lot of data on people born within it.

You can't be serious.
godbent: (Oh. Oh I see...)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-22 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
...Of course I'm serious!

[When is she not]
menial: (disgust disgust ^)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-22 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
They actually want to... provoke reproduction?

...

[Horror, horror.]

Right, back to reason A.
godbent: (Never a penis)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-23 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
From their perspective I don't see why they wouldn't.

...But anyway, reason A. Testing shifts is important because Shifting is used for basically everything in this world.
menial: (& blank blank)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-23 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
['Sure, from their creepy-ass perspective.']

And so they think by inflicting these things on us, they can get more powerful or something? Calibrate the dials just the right way?
godbent: (Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-23 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
More precise I think would be more accurate... but powerful too, I guess... For example, when people are taken to drafts, they're Shifted there. If they're incompatible with the Shift which teleports people through and protects them from the natural shifts out there, they can get violently ill. But another example is the clothes and items in the shop - I don't know if they has happened to you yet, but different items and outfits from home - exact ones - get pulled here sometimes, that's based on a pull similar to the one pulling us here.
menial: (% head on hand)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-23 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
So it's really everything. Well, what'll ever make them stop, then?
godbent: (Yeah I don't like that)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-23 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's a few things. After all, their stated objective is to get back to their homes too.
menial: (Default)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-23 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but seeing as how they seem to have it pretty good here, they might just hold off on that, right? Or leave us in the lurch.
godbent: (When in Rome)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's the thing, I don't think they do--- or well, I'm sure the executives do, but not the average member of the Organization. Because unlike us, they live out lifetimes here.
menial: (% can't say i do)

[personal profile] menial 2012-04-23 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. So they can't get back the time they spend here?
godbent: (Colors.of.the.Heart)

[personal profile] godbent 2012-04-23 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
They can, but there's a low turnover. Think about it. Some people here vanish literally in days, they just show up and poof out. The longest of us have been here five years.

...There was this low ranking Malnosso who used to talk to use named Jacob. He's been here for- actually, no, he'd just been working for them for ten years... or well, thirteen now, I guess. That guy Catherine who talks with us sometimes had lived out the whole of his life and died a few times now. Apparently, if you die of old age you just reset to whatever age you came here at. Compared to that, compared to being in this world for hundreds or maybe even thousands of years, our time here looks like a blip. Insignificant, I guess, but mostly a hope, for them.
