The Cultural Fair

Who: Everyone! Or as close to that as possible, please. \o/
What: The Cultural Fair
When: April 25th-26th, though the earlier set-up days (22nd, 23rd, and keeping everything dry on the 24th) are also encouraged to help get a feel for it
Where: All around the town square
Summary: Also here.
Rating: ... is this a thing?

Note: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier. Work was probably started for it on the 22nd-23rd for labor purposes, sheltering things from the weather on the 24th, and the actual Fair is on the 25th-26th, so using any of those dates and figuring out where your characters are helping would be good. CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth.

I'll leave the descriptions up to you all as there probably isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about it. Think of it as something on a much smaller scale than the festival from a year ago, definitely, but how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. That said there are plenty of unique sights, so enjoy browsing! Thank you!

(Also, please add your name tags!)

Well, I was actually pretty well-acquainted with Romania- it was the focus of a lot of the Black Court history, prior to their being wiped out when Stoker published his book- but I figured I'd drop in on Helios anyway.

"I notice you didn't say much about the vampires."

Maybe I should have waited until he was looking at me to say that, but it was funnier this way.
folklorist: (Ah that's going to leave a mark)

[ And Helios being the absentminded derp that he is doesn't hear Harry until he actually asks that question. He might startle and look up almost like a deer in headlights. He also might have jumped a little in his seat and jammed his knee into the table. Ow. Thanks Harry. Helios will just laugh sheepishly. ] Oh! Harry. Nice to see you here. [ A smile. There's also a chirp from underneath the table and Harry will find his pant leg being tugged upon by a tiny baby dragon. Rawr he's ferocious! ]

W-Well vampires of one of the better known mythica in this region. I-I wanted to, um, show a bit more of a diversity when it comes to Romania. There's so many cultures and myths after all.

[ Transylvania is the center point for most vampiric myths after all. ]

"Yeah, that's-"

I stopped and frowned at whatever was savaging my pants leg, preparing to nudge away a puppy or some-

... dragon.

It was a dragon. It was a tiny, scaly, fangy, clawy... slightly pudgy, and absolutely adorable little dragon.

Look. I'm a man, right? And men do not, as a rule, make undignified noises and coddle tiny adorable critters. It's just not done.

We're far too proud and masculine for that.

So while it may have looked like I got gooey-eyed and picked up the dragon and started scratching it behind the ears, I assure you, that isn't what happened.

In fact, I was applying an advanced sort of technique, well known for soothing dragons, that would ensure it would never be able to harm me. Dragons grow up big and powerful, y'know. This was pure practicality. Pragmatism.

All business-like.

And I definitely didn't make a little "Aww" noise. That definitely didn't happen.

[ Helios will by no means use this as blackmail or for any other such purposes. He's actually smiling still though as he watches Harry and Luminair. He was cute uncannily so, so he really can't blame the other for reacting in such a way. He'll push out his seat and walk around to the front of the stand. ] Ah. Luminair I told you no biting.

[ His tone if firm albeit it lacks the sort of...anger to it. He really can't get angry at the baby dragon. Too cute. ] I apologize for that. He's never usually this wound up. I-I suppose it's all the people around. He didn't, ah, hurt you did he?

"Nah, he's fine."

Absolutely precious, in fact.

Not that I would ever admit that. I put the dragon down with another little scritch of its nose- very important, that. Makes sure that it bonds with my scent. It's a vital element of the ritual- and turned back toward him.

"Ah, it's just as well. Where I come from, the Black Court- the vampires that hang out in Romania a lot- are damn near extinct anyway."
folklorist: (Ever so curious)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Helios smirks at that and Luminair will give a trill little squeaky at that action. He'll shake his head when Harry puts him down, walking around the other man sniffing him before giving a small sneeze. Luminair will walk over to Helios who will give him a good few scratches behind his horns before standing up. ] The Black Court? Do vampires have families and such things in your world then? I-I mean there are vampire families still living in my own Romania. D-Dracula being the most famous. But, well, it's-it's a shame that's the case...

[ or so Helios believes. He knows now that vampires vary in how they act in other worlds and not every world has vampires quite like his own. ] Are there other types of beings in your world, aside from vampires I mean?
quicktoanger: (Amused)

[personal profile] quicktoanger 2012-05-05 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yes. First of all, there are three types of- well. Four types of vampire, but one is really reclusive and barely vampiric at all. There's also two Fae courts, along with a bajillion unaligned varieties of Wyldfae. There's an entire council of Wizards, there are three varieties of werewolf- and at least one wolfwere- there's skinwalkers, demons, angels of the fallen and not-fallen variety, half-vampires, necromancers and their assorted pets, ghosts, elemental and conceptual spirits, banshees, harpies, black magicians and sorcerers, Knights, dragons- a lot less cuddly than this little guy- and that's not even getting into what's beyond the Outer Gates."

I chuckled.

"And that's just the ones I've fought myself."
folklorist: (I came across a strange thing)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-08 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Helios' eyes widen at that description Harry gives. He almost looks excited and amazed. ] Outer Gates?

Y-You've fought them? [ Ah. Another world like Giles' in a way. Helios can't say he's surprised though. ]
quicktoanger: (Neutral)

[personal profile] quicktoanger 2012-05-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've fought most of them. The White Council hasn't actually tried to kill me, though it's certainly tried to try to kill me, and Uriel's mostly on my side. Mostly. Oh, and even. I'm not crazy enough to try and fight one of the Fae Queens."

... Well, except the one time.

"And the Outer Gates refers to the channels one uses to summon things from the farthest reaches of the cosmos. Beyond even the realms of the Nevernever and the dream worlds, where reality itself is harmful to human life. Y'know, your basic Lovecraftian Horrors."
folklorist: (I don't honestly know)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
F-Fought them? [ A frown. Oh dear. Helios isn't sure what to think about that. Fighting and violence in general isn't usually his methods towards things. But, well, different worlds...different reasoning. He wishes more world's mythica were like his own in some cases. Talkative, able to reason with and discuss things. It makes them less unseemly which they aren't in truth but other worlds don't offer such things unfortunately and it's that reason that makes him rather saddened. ] I-I see. This, this white council is comprised of humans or, ah, a-angels? Faeries are known to be a bit h-hostile in some cases. I-I've spoke with a good few Fae and their respective kings and queens. It wasn't so bad actually.

[ The outer gate's description gets a hm from him. ] I should hope no one has a-actually tried to summon or open up any such thing. Cthulhu...Nyarlathotep. Such beings are even feared in my own world.

[ Helios himself shudders a little thinking about meeting either of the two. It's a basal fear, really, but some beings are just not meant to be seen or met. ]

"In fairness, they usually started it. Sometimes not with me, but always with somebody. And the White Council is composed of human wizards, like me. Well, like me if I was a crusty old machiavellian with a stick up my ass."

I chuckled.

"... And no, most people aren't crazy enough to summon beyond the Outer Gates. It's a violation of the laws of magic."

Of course, my late mentor and former adoptive father Justin DuMorne wasn't most people, so I'd actually beaten my first eldritch abomination by the tender and squeaky age of 17, but there's no need to upset the poor guy.
folklorist: (Downcast)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-12 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. I-I see. That's unfortunate. I-I'm still not used to mythica who, who attack people. Even if in my own world they still sometimes do. As for your White Council they, they sound a bit like the Magic Council in my own world. [ The Magic Council. Even now thinking about them makes his voice drop lower. Helios will let out a very apparent relieved sigh at that answer. ]

Oh thank goodness.

"Certainly helps me sleep easier, I'll tell you that much."

I shrugged.

"Besides, I do a pretty good job with my own allies of keeping the spooks and boojums away."

I-I suppose my own world is one of the few places that have somewhat civil m-mythological creatures. [ A frown as he looks away towards the other stands. ]

Do you ever think they'll be able to live together with humans in your world?
