The Cultural Fair

Who: Everyone! Or as close to that as possible, please. \o/
What: The Cultural Fair
When: April 25th-26th, though the earlier set-up days (22nd, 23rd, and keeping everything dry on the 24th) are also encouraged to help get a feel for it
Where: All around the town square
Summary: Also here.
Rating: ... is this a thing?

Note: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier. Work was probably started for it on the 22nd-23rd for labor purposes, sheltering things from the weather on the 24th, and the actual Fair is on the 25th-26th, so using any of those dates and figuring out where your characters are helping would be good. CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth.

I'll leave the descriptions up to you all as there probably isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about it. Think of it as something on a much smaller scale than the festival from a year ago, definitely, but how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. That said there are plenty of unique sights, so enjoy browsing! Thank you!

(Also, please add your name tags!)

Not surprising. The preservation of a native tongue is an important step in preserving cultural heritage among youth raised abroad, no matter the countries involved. I was always envious of the few children I knew growing up whose parents came from abroad.

[That was, anyway, until her parents abandoned her and Russ when she was fifteen. Funny how quickly her priorities and envies changed then. Fully losing herself in academia to replace the pain and confusion of losing her entire family in a matter of days and being thrust into the foster care system. She began to learn those languages then.]

I know a few words. Craniu, for example.

You're absolutely right. The native tongue does get lost when you're not there to pick up on the accent your people have. I-I only have a slight one thanks to you parents and, well, returning back home after a short while. But I think the eleven years I spent in America somewhat...dampened my overall accent to a degree. [ Helios smiles when she says that. ]

What others do you know?

Basics. Alo, mulţumesc, vă rog, nu atingeţi că. I guest lectured at Bucharest University a few years ago.

folklorist: (Yes I do agree with that)

Foarte bine! You've got very good dictation. [ A smile and nod as he looks at his stand. ] I-I think if you wanted to learn more you'd certainly be able too.
truthin_bones: ([happy] delighted)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-04-30 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I speak six languages fluently already. It is a skill I've very much enjoyed improving upon.
folklorist: (I'm just your average headmaster yep)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-01 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I do have a good few under my belt. Latin, some French, Japanese, Chinese and if you consider the runic alphabet a language that as well. I-I've been meaning to study them more but, well, Luceti makes it a bit difficult. [ He'll look over at the wings. ]

I-I usually frequent Japan a lot for prospective students, China as well. But six languages. Ah. That's rather amazing.
truthin_bones: ([happy] i am all that)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. [Said with very little modesty. And why should she have any? Her language capabilities are very impressive and she knows it.] Your own repertoire is rather impressive as well.

Do you have much need for these languages here?
folklorist: (Ever so curious)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-08 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest I haven't had the need to use it them at all. E-Every language I've see, regardless of what world it's been from, I've been able to understand it.

[ Helios frowns a little. ] It makes it a bit difficult touching up on my language repertoire I admit.
truthin_bones: ([interest] i'll consider it)

I have noticed similar. It is also stated as much in the newcomer's guide. Has anyone attempted to look into what is causing this effect?
folklorist: (This is a thoughtful pose)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-09 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure...I'm certain someone probably has by now. You'd probably get a better answer asking over the journals. I admit that I don't particularly have the needed skills or knowledge on such things. If, if it has to do with something the Malnosso put on us.
truthin_bones: ([happy] small grin)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-11 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I will. It is certainly worth the inquiry, for curiosity's sake at the very least.
folklorist: (Ever so curious)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Curiosity. I do know that well. It's gotten me into quite a few pickles in the past. But, ah, I'm sure you'll be able to find out something. If there's one thing that people are open to discussing it's certainly the oddities about Luceti. I-I think it makes everyone scratch their heads, that's why.

It is human nature to want to comprehend what they cannot. Hence the development of religion prior to the scientific method.
folklorist: (I suppose that works)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. I suppose it's just...in our nature to be curious. I've told many a demon, angel, and god that before. They always seem to find it funny. But that's just people.
truthin_bones: ([confusion] what the hell?)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-14 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[He gets a rather flat look at that, followed by a quick shake of her head. The atheist is very much a non-believer.] Impossible.
folklorist: (Er. Um. Don't kill me please)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-15 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Helios blinks and then tilts his head. Oh. Oh! Now he understands. ] Ah. W-Well not, not necessarily. Not in my own world. [ He rubs the back of his neck with a hand and gives a sheepish laugh. ]

I-I suppose it is a bit of a shock to hear though. I-I really can't fault you for not believing my words. I...didn't use to believe it either but then I have a large group of angel and demon students at my school now. [ And there went any sort of disbelief he had. ]
truthin_bones: ([indifference] eh)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
...I would be willing to believe that you speak of alternative sentient species, much like the ones encountered here, who merely resemble the mythological descriptions in Christian lore.
folklorist: (I'm just your average headmaster yep)

[personal profile] folklorist 2012-05-18 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. But you don't believe I've spoken to actual angels and demons. I-I can understand why you wouldn't. [ After all people do have their differing religions and whatnot. Helios can't fault a person for their set of beliefs. ]

It's too bad Altor isn't here. He's a rather nice angel to t-talk to. A bit of a temper though when it comes to demons though.
truthin_bones: ([anger] bitch please)

[personal profile] truthin_bones 2012-05-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would I? [She has no cause for it in her own world. Especially being an atheist, Brennan is perfectly content to think of them as alternative species.

But, thankfully for Helios, she presses on rather than continue to dwell on the topic.]
Is there anyone from your world here?
