Summary: It's that special time when the Malnosso collect all their recent experiments and apply them all at once to measure effectiveness. Although invaluable as research, it tends to leave the subjects looking just a bit mad.

[There was a stranger in a dress with her back turned to him early that morning in House 44. At Sabbi's insistence, Viral was slowly moving his few belongings into one of the spare bedrooms of the house--tacitly making his presence known at times when the house was quiet. He didn't intend on spending much time there, but he was starting to notice a few habits of the residents.

Among them was that they didn't have a slim woman help them with the cleaning.

He quietly approached, intending on asking why she was there. That wasn't what happened.]

That's a nice dress you're wearing. The color suits you.

[Billy has been trying so very hard not to be embarrassed by all of this. It's an experiment, he'd learned this pretty early on. An... exceedingly silly one. And if he just went along with it, it would eventually resolve itself, right? Since magic didn't seem to be doing a damn thing for himself.

The dress had really done a number on his ego, though. And his manly pride. Because- look, just because he's gay doesn't mean he wants to be a crossdresser, okay? It just sort of happened. He'd been in the shops browsing for a new feather duster since, apparently, the Malnosso wanted him to clean everything ever, and it had just... called to him. And it was a nice dress; he could recognize that, beneath all the internal horror of "oh god, I am actually wearing a dress, what psychological mumbo-jumbo would my mother say about this".

And when the sudden voice behind him says that it's a nice dress, all he can do is turn in surprise, one hand to his chest, and stare. He'd really been hoping he wouldn't be caught doing this...

Wait a minute, he knows this guy.]

Wh... V... Viral!?

[That face--

was adorable!

Viral has the grace to be embarrassed for Billy's sake, and quickly looks away. No, his cheeks aren't red because of bashfulness. He's dutifully embarrassed for the young man in a nicely cut dress that is cleaning the house he only just moved into.]

Billy. What are you...? [A flash of understanding draws his gaze back to the young man.] This is connected to all of the strange things right now, isn't it?

I don't- I mean- I think so? This is my first time, so...

[...Strange. He feels the sudden, nearly-irresistible urge to run. But why? It's not like he's in danger or anything here.]

This is my first time too, you know.

[The awkwardness of the exchange goes completely over his head as he tries to wrap his mind around the concept of what happens during a Shift. There's his confusion to make note of...and the fact that he's feeling very drawn toward Billy for some reason.]

[He should be disturbed by the implications of this conversation; inwardly, he knows this. He also knows the appropriate response is not to blush coyly and smile at his handsome prince.

...

Well. Knowing and doing are, unfortunately, two different things.]

I don't think it's all that bad, though. It could be a lot worse.

[He smiles back, very aware of how strange this would seem to an outsider, and steps a few paces closer to his unusual princess.]

That's right. You could be in a complete stranger's house.

[He extends a hand in an open, friendly gesture.] Why don't you sit? This house is all ready very clean.

Uh- but- I can't stay. If it's already clean, I... have to go. Really.

[Oh god is this ever awkward. The urge to flee is growing stronger by the minute. What to do, what to do...]

Why?

[Viral breaks the distance and catches the young man's hand in his own with surprising gentleness, gingerly holding it as he studied Billy's face. He couldn't even say why he was so concerned for him, nor why he admired the cut of the dress on Billy's slim frame.

The lines of it really did emphasize his legs. They were nice legs.]

There's nothing you need to run from here, so you don't need to be so nervous about sitting and having a drink for a minute.

[...Ohgod. Billy lowers his eyes, staring at the hand around his. He still really, really wants to run, but he can't seem to bring himself to pull away just yet.

This. Is so. Weird.]

I'm pretty sure I need to get all the chores done, or...

[He trails off somewhat helplessly, because he's pretty sure his nonexistent evil stepmother can't stop him from going to a nonexistent ball, but that's how Cinderella works, okay, and it can't be anything else. Still, he can't help how flustered he's feeling right now.]

...or what?

[Concerned, Viral starts to guide Billy to the kitchen. Though not the greatest host in Luceti, he knew enough of proper etiquette to know that a glass of water was better than nothing. There was still that tea that was too sweet for his tastes around, but he wasn't certain how to make it.

Water would do.]

Or... I don't know. It's just part of the story.

[Honestly, there's no explanation he can offer that makes sense. He just really, really wants to run away right now.

Or dance. He could dance first. But expecting that would probably be too weird right now.]

...A story, huh?

[It was a word that struck a chord with him, called him back to his final order from the Spiral King himself. Live, and tell the story of humanity's fate. Viral, a soldier by trade, felt that the task was daunting--

He laughed softly, the sentiment unbidden.]

Maybe I can learn something from you. Could you show me sometime?

[Billy blinks in surprise; he hadn't expected that kind of response.]

Show you... what, the fairy tale? It's probably at the library, actually. 'Cinderella'. Pretty sure that's the one that's going on right now.

[How else could he explain the constant desire to clean everything?]

[ Cinderella? Fairy tale? These were more words that Viral didn't understand well--what kind of world was Billy really from? Confusion was evident in his eyes as he pieces the information together.]

...I see. [Not really.] Let's go to the library, and you can tell me more about 'Cinderella'.

Oh, uh, sure. [He pauses, then glances around one last time.] But are you sure you don't need anything cleaned...?

You don't need to clean up other peoples houses. [He glances away and nods to the front door.]

Come on. You can also explain why you want to clean everything on the way.

[...Sigh. Maybe he can clean the library or something when he gets there. Giving his dress an idle tug - really, what had possessed him to pick one so short? - he finally caves and starts for the door.]

Man... thank god for Disney or I wouldn't know this stuff at all. Okay, uh- "Once upon a time" - fairy tales always start like that for some reason - there was this girl, Cinderella. She lived with her parents until her mom died, and then her dad married this cranky old bitch who had two other daughters. That's where the wicked-stepmother cliche comes from.

[There are so many more words that Viral doesn't fully understand in Billy's explanation, but he listens with quiet interest at the nonchalant retelling.]

...the story didn't end well, did it? [Anything with the word 'wicked' as a descriptor wasn't meant to bring happiness.] And where does the cleaning come in?

...You don't know much about fairy tales, do you?

[That's the first time he's ever heard anyone assume there'd be a bad ending. Sheesh.]

Anyway, don't rush me. The stepmother made Cinderella do all the chores in the house, like she was a maid and not a daughter, and she seriously overworked her. But since Cinderella's your typical princess-type, she's all good, and kind, and well-behaved, so she didn't complain about it. She never fought back.

[Sounds familiar, ha.]

[Viral's thoughts stray to his few encounters with Princess Nia, with her sweet smile and hair like the clouds above. The thought of her actually cleaning--

if her cleaning was anything like her doll repairs, she would be giggling in delight while doing work of a quality that would get a beastman executed.]

...I know stories of a different sort--they involve more warriors and less princesses.

Its still hard to believe that Cinderella would do a very good job of cleaning.

Well... she's not really a princess yet. That comes later.

[God, this story is so all over the place right now. He's never been very good at this, admittedly. He tends to ramble way too much for decent explanations.]

Okay, look, there was this local prince- and his kingdom was gonna have a party. A ball, I mean. And everybody in the kingdom got to go, because... I dunno, I think he needed to find a wife or something. And Cinderella wanted to go, but she wasn't allowed because she's way hotter than her step-sisters, and her step-mom wanted them to marry the prince. ...One of them, I mean. Can't both marry him. So off they go to the party and she's stuck crying in the garden because her life sucks.

That sounds...

[Odd? Petty? Very human? Viral pauses thoughtfully, biting back the urge to nitpick at semantics, and considers all of the women that he's met in his life.

They would storm the ball if they really wanted to go.]

That sounds like she needs to tie her boots and go to the ball anyway. No one can stop her.

Heh, you're not the only one who believed that. While she was crying, the story goes that her "fairy godmother" shows up- actually, I don't even know how to explain her. A random, magical old woman who grants wishes to good girls who want their dreams to come true, or... something like that? Anyway, she uses her magic to give Cinderella her dress, and a coach, and some horses, so she can go to the ball too.

So she just wished for it, and it happened?

[This tale was oddly reminiscent to their first conversation, where Billy told him about superheroes and they both talked about how enough determination can change the tide of any battle.]
