Summary: It's that special time when the Malnosso collect all their recent experiments and apply them all at once to measure effectiveness. Although invaluable as research, it tends to leave the subjects looking just a bit mad.

So there is a mod post and it pretty much tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. This is a second log so people can change up their effects and try something new, jump into the event late, or just avoid the impending CAPTCHA on the first log.

Mm, I get it. Alright, you're off the hook this time. But I mean it- if he's agreed to continue your training, then he should take it seriously. There's nothing more dangerous than a self-taught alchemist, take it from me.

[She lifts her automail arm to get her point across more clearly.]

[... well that's something he didn't know.]

Is that how you lost your arm and leg?

...Oh, right. He never told you.

[She falls silent for a long moment, then leans back, stretching her arms out over her head. When she speaks again, her voice is quiet, a little morose. It's a hard story to share, but it's Sokka- and she trusts him.]

Al and me... our old man ditched us when we were really little, and Mom died that same year. It's hard for a couple of kids to be left alone like that, you know? You get lonely. You get desperate. And since we thought that alchemy could do anything, we figured it could bring the dead back to life, too.

[He was actually wary to ask. It felt wrong to press for details from this version of Ed, when the Ed he knows might not be so eager to give them away.

One part stands out. "Mom died". A feeling he knows well. But he remembers that Ed's mom was in Luceti. He had thought it sad for Ed when she left, but he had no idea how bad it was. Now that he's hearing the story... he can't help but want to know all of it.]

That's what the books call human transmutation, right?

...Yeah. Bringing a human back from the dead, creating a human that never existed- that's human transmutation. And it's forbidden because it's not even possible. And there's a price you have to pay even if it doesn't work.

[She leans back, crossing her arms, visibly uncomfortable.]

The greater the loss, the more you want it. And the greater price that you pay for it, too. Performing human transmutation takes you to the Gate of Truth- the source of all alchemic knowledge, something that exists in every human being. There's this creepy guy who hangs out there- Truth, or God, or "The World"- he's really unclear about what the hell he is. But he makes a trade with the alchemist: they get to see inside the Gate, and they give something up in return. Al and I tried to bring Mom back, and I lost my leg. Al... lost his whole body.

... wait. So you mean Al...? That armor?

[It's sinking in with a horrible sort of realization. Something had never been quite right with that boy. So his body... was that even possible?]

Yeah- it was empty. Al was stuck in that body for four years. I was only able to trade my arm for his soul.

[She'd have given up more if she could have, but it just wasn't possible. It's basically written all over her face- that devotion to her brother.]

... that's an amazing sacrifice.

[He's stunned. All this time, he thought he had known Ed. But is this really what happened? It's. Hard to believe.]

I don't know if I'd say that... it didn't feel like a choice at the time, just something I had to do no matter what the cost. Is there anything you wouldn't do for Katara?

[You support your family- fight for them. It's natural.]

[When it came down to it... there's a head shake. She was all he really had in the end.]

... I understand why you did it. When we lost our mom, we would have done anything to have her back.

[Maybe they were lucky to not have the temptation of something to try.]

[Ed just nods. If that's how he feels, then he gets it.]

It was the same way for us back then. Of course, after that I was always guilty about putting him in the armor and he was guilty for taking my arm, so we started looking for ways to get our bodies back. That's what we've been doing ever since.

[He glances at her arm.]

... I guess you're still looking, huh?

Yes and no. That experiment a while back, where we got to go home for a day? I saw the end of my journey. So now it's just a matter of waiting it out. Compared to all those years of running around for loose ends, it's not a big deal.

... well I guess it's good something came out of all that, then.

[Seeing something to end like that, but knowing you have to do it again. What must that be like?}

Yeah, it did. [She's quiet for a moment, then looks up, lips pursing.] Sorry to dump all of that stuff on you. I just think it's important for alchemists to know the truth about human transmutation before they make the same mistakes as me. I hope he feels the same way, too.

Yeah. [Well. Sokka wouldn't be trying that here anyway. Especially what with... people never saying dead anyway. But the lesson isn't lost on him.] He probably does.

I think so, yeah. But at least now there are people who can remind him, since I can't.

[She stands up, stretching her arms up over her head before resting them on her hips.]

Well, I should probably head back. If the experiment doesn't make us both crazy before the week's up, swing by when you're free and I'll give you a real lesson, okay?

[Oh. Right. he gives a nod.]

Sure. I'll uh, talk to you again. I guess. Kind of. [Except it won't be her. But someone else.]

[And off she goes NEVER TO MEET HIM AGAIN]
