There will be a thread for interacting with NPCs, but they may not all go up at once, so keep an eye out for them.

I've never used a real gun before. We had some stuff that fired things like paint balls and eggs, but it's not the same.

[He shrugs. It can't be that hard, right?]

My aim isn't bad. Just point and shoot.

"Can you hit a moving person at one hundred meters?"

"I do not question your skill, but perhaps you should get a rifle and practice with it until you're more confident that you can? Just to keep focused, you understand."

[And to slightly increase your odds of killing cultists before they get close enough to hurt you, because you're breaking his heart right now, Rufio.]

Is there somewhere to practice that at?

"The base itself does not, but I believe the ship has simulators."

[But there was another option.]

"... Alternatively, I could escort you out of the base and we could get practice of a more... hands-on variety."

[Key word there being escort. If he was very lucky, perhaps his first taste of true battle would sour him to the experience, and if not, at least he would get some practice, the better to be able to defend himself- with Obi-Wan close at hand to protect him.]

You wanna fight me?

[That gets a grin out of the Lost Boy. So many of the adults here didn't really take him seriously, and he hated it.

As much as he disliked pirates, they would at least consider him a threat.]

"Not quite that hands on. Your attention would be better directed, I think, at those outside of the camp. The enemy."

[He grins.]

"I would simply be there as backup, as it were. It's dangerous to be out there alone, after all."

[Especially a kid.]

That isn't really practice though, is it? If I'm fighting the real thing?

[He rolls one shoulder.]

...Whatever. It's not like I'm worried about fighting them. Where do I get myself a gun?

"I suppose it isn't."

[Save for the incredibly controlled circumstances, that is. If the domes were breached- as Obi-Wan fully expected they would be- he would never be able to watch over Rufio during the fight. This was the best way for him to learn.]

"I believe they can be acquired from the Malnosso security operatives. I didn't check- I had no need for one."

If you're not using a gun, then what're you gonna use? A sword?

[Because if this guy didn't need a gun, then maybe he didn't either.]

"I brought my own weapon from home. A lightsaber."

[WHAT IS THIS DANGER YOU SPEAK OF?]

A what saber? Show it to me.

[... He has such a bad feeling about this. You have no idea.

But he takes out his lightsaber, shows the hilt to Rufio for a moment, and then draws it closer and ignites it, giving it a brief flourish so the boy can observe the blade's motion.]

Rufio just sort of stares for a moment.]

Whoah. Is there any way I can get one?

"I'm afraid they're rather hard to come by outside of my own world. It matters little; it requires years of intense training before one can wield a lightsaber safely. I studied to do so for my entire childhood."

Can I at least try?

[He reaches an arm out expectantly.]

"I don't know if you appreciate how easily one could injure themselves with this blade. In my own order, we are given practice weapons incapable of causing more than a slight burn to train with. They are not to be taken lightly."

[And he had gotten a rather terrifying number of burns. If he had been using a true lightsaber, he'd have lost body parts, almost certainly.]

[Rufio frowns. Stupid adults and their stupid safety rules.]

I could probably handle it. You just don't want anyone else touching it.

[Oh, this conversation was not going the way Obi-Wan would have liked it to at all. He didn't need Rufio resentful. He definitely didn't need Rufio doing something dangerous to try and prove a point.]

"Let me propose a compromise, Rufio. If you use a pulse rifle for the remainder of the draft, and do your best to stay at a distance from the fighting, then I shall begin training you to use this very lightsaber when we return to the village."

I thought you said not everyone could use them.

Don't try to trick me into doing what you want.

[And suddenly, Obi-Wan's voice becomes much sharper, much cooler, and much more authoritative.]

"I said it required a great deal of training. I am offering that training. We would meet in the battledome, six afternoons a week, and there I would train with you."

[Rufio makes something of a face. That sounds too organized. Too much like school. Regular lessons?

His interest in the weapon dwindles.]

I don't like schedules.

[Hmm. That doesn't sound promising at all.]

"I see. Well, it was merely an offer- but should you wish to learn the technique of the lightsaber, the offer still stands. It is a demanding discipline, but like many martial arts, the rigorous discipline can be very rewarding."
