She wanted to tell him he wasn't a killer, but -- had their roles been reverse? She would have felt so so similarly.

"He said a lot of things, actually. He made it pretty clear that death costs him nothing. I, uhm, asked him what he lost when we last met and he only told me that...that whatever I took from him, he'd already given away. His life, I suppose."

And that willingness -- that sacrifice -- seemed so key in all that he had said.

Well that's odd."

Jack felt they were treading on tricky ground, this talk of giving away life. Of sacrifice.

"Mmhm. And then, in a twist of poetic injustice that I am not soon to forget? He used that very same life's blood to turn me into a pincushion. All in all, an exciting time."

And a dour subject. She was growing wearier and wearing from it and from the effort of staying awake. But she didn't want to drift off yet.

"At least that joke of a space suit got all the abuse it deserved."

"You looked stunning in it," the pirate replied absently. His mind was still on the details, horrid as they were -- and the idea of sacrifice. "Annie. Don't think of it now. We can speak of it later, blood-weapons and all that. Later."

She'd given it to him. His weapon -- blood had gushed from a wound in his gut. He hadn't even tried to block it. Of course. It was the first of many errors played and replayed the moment she shut her eyes.

"Later. So much later. Like when...hey, you're gonna stay with me. Right?" She lifted her head. "Because if I have to do more of this," she gestured at the bed and her having to be in it, "I am so not doing it alone."

"As much as I can," he promised with another kiss. "Buffy? Every moment I can be here, I will be here."

There would be times he had to go foraging for her. Cosmos. Jello. Ice cream. Soup. There might be moments of crisis in which all defenders were called to task. Jack planned on staying around the infirmary, though. Here he could and would defend.

"N-no. Not here. Home."

[all7seas]

"There should be no question about that, Annielove."

[herotypical]

"Bones isn't here to keep me under house arrest. It falls to you."

[all7seas]

"Me? A jailer? I rather thought it would be more like me bringing you various foods and cold drinks and telling you stories and us watching that film about that Bollywood place."

[herotypical]

"India. The Bollywood place is India."

[all7seas]

"That's the one! That film about that wedding when they dance."

[herotypical]

"Jack. Pretty sure you just described every Bollywood movie that's been made. Ever."

[all7seas]

"Hopefully it won't take you THAT long to heal up and be my healthy Annie once more."

Never mind the fact that he might not be in the mood for those sorts of films after finding out about Archie and Elizabeth.

"Maybe I'll fake it just to keep the cold drinks coming."

[all7seas]

"Maybe I'll simply dump them over your head in buckets."

[herotypical]

"...You wouldn't."

Aha. A spark.

[all7seas]

"Or just one big huge large-ish bucket. And it would be filled with lemon squash and ice."

He wouldn't; but this was certainly a more fun bent of conversation than bloodmade weapons and death penalties.

"Make you all lemony-sour."

[herotypical]

"And sticky. You forgot sticky. Eugh."

[all7seas]

"Mmhmm. Easier to keep you grounded that way, all sticky and such. More better for watching the spectacular dance-y pageantry of my people.


Mum's. Mum's people."

"...We're gonna get ants. And it's gonna be your fault. And they'll eat Seven and then I'll be homeless and so will everyone else and it's still gonna be your fault."

Note how carefully she did not approach the other subject. The subject of parents -- mom or dad or otherwise.

"You, most beautiful, shall never be homeless whilst I am there to upend some sort of barrow over your head.


And a plant. We'll have a plant. A fern."

That was fine -- he was good with avoiding that topic for now as well.

"...I'm so not going to live under a wheelbarrow with you. Fern or no fern."

She risked the attempt to nuzzle a little bit closer. It was worth the ache.

"We'll find another place, then. A not-under-something place." There was a small knot tying and untying itself in his gut, and Jack tried to ignore it. He tried to dream them a place, much as he had dreamed their children.

There were two very healthy potted ferns on the kitchen counter, just beneath the window.

"Something with a view. And a walk-in closet."

Paradoxically, planning for the impossible made planning a little more possible. Mentally. Emotionally.
