No, the food doesn't spoil. [He sighs, wearily.] It just means that you get sucked through when you go in to pull something out.

[It was how he got sucked into this mess, and it was probably part of the reason why he wasn't able to return to his kitchen. There would be hell to pay for the Malnosso when this Shift ended.]

So the refrigerators are teleporting people now to? [He just can't seem to get past this.]

I just...don't even get it. At least the doors and windows make some sense. [Look at him, trying to make this place logical.]

This place doesn't make sense. You'll only make yourself crazy if you try to understand it. It's easier to just play along than fight it in this case.

Yeah, I know. I just can't help but try to make some sense out of it. [He places his coffee order and steps aside for Lupin to place his.]

You'd think I'd be more used to this kind of thing by now.

Most people want to make sense of the strangeness. It's easier, and something we do understand.

Why would you be more used to this sort of thing? Didn't you just pop in recently?

Yeah, I did. But before I came? I'd just recently dealt with an alien invasion with my team.

A full on invasion, huh? [More than shocked, Lupin is intrigued.] I've only dealt with them one-on-one, and only rarely. How did that go for you?

[Well that's unexpected. Maybe he's the only one who still thinks an alien invasion is something to brag about.]

Well, it came close to going bad really fast. But my teammates proved to be very capable. We were able to get the portal between our worlds closed and get rid of the bomb that was being dropped on us. [Although it had almost cost Tony his life.]

[Not at all--extraterrestrial or paranormal encounters are rare in his world, but notable enough to be remembered forever. He is genuinely curious, and talking shop.]

At least you won--that's the important thing. It was a near miss with mine too, but he didn't need a fleet. He was just bent on destruction.

But mine didn't 'invade' per se. He was on my world for a long, long time before he struck. Had to kick him off sabotaging his tech. It was worth it though.

So your world had a lone alien life form hanging around the planet for years before it decides one day to destroy it?

[He just wants to make sure he gets the facts right.]

Was he...friendly before that?

No--he was working on it subtly for years before anyone took notice, and was slowly cloning people with genetic markers that he liked so he could populate the planet anew afterward.

I only noticed because he went after my girlfriend. No way was I gonna let a creep like him have Fujiko!

What happened to him after you stopped him?

[It was the 70s. Lupin's not even sure that he wasn't mad at the time.]

He was spaced, Steve. Sent into the black without any protection.

...but enough about that guy. There were portals, you said?

Oh. [It's just as well that Lupin changes the topic. Steve isn't even sure how to respond to that.]

Yeah, Loki-it's a long story-came back to Earth so he could open the portal and allow the Chitauri to invade. Once it was closed, all the Chitauri that made it to our side dropped dead.

I thought that Loki was the Norse god of fire and chaos.

...I heard he's the god of mischief. At least that's what I think Thor said.

Well, no. He joined up with them to take over the planet.

I..see. [He didn't, but who was he to argue against ancient gods joining with aliens for world conquest?

It struck him with an idea though.]

Portal implies barrier. Do you think you could do something against the barrier that's around our little village if you had the rest of your team here?

[He shakes his head.] I don't think so. It was the Tessaract that created the portal. It's like this incredibly powerful Asgardian...cube basically.

Pity we don't have that magic cube then.

[Though, realistically, he could guess why.] It could really balance the game..and they're not going to let that happen.
