Summary: Apep, an Egyptian god of Chaos, possessed Helios and wrecked havoc. Those involved are going to have to cope with their injuries, mental traumas, and newfound night terrors!
Rating: R, for possible trigger warnings for descriptions of violence and bad language.

Luckily, I managed to reach the clinic before she'd left- though I caught her on the way out the door.

I nodded by way of a greeting.

"How're you holding up?"

[Harry, how you can ask such a simple yet loaded question so casually is a mystery to her. He had warned her about Helios, the possession...and she had given her word that she would stop it. Harry was the first person she'd failed when she had fallen to Apep's influence.

Letting out a heavy breath Sabriel shakes her head, going with a simple answer as she carefully leans back against the outside wall.]

Not really what I'd asked, but I guess it answered my question all on its own.

"... I'm sorry. For what it's worth."

[She shakes her head, eyes lowered momentarily.]

I overestimated my abilities and now I must cope with the consequences.

[Not all of which are evident on her person. The physical and spiritual damage aside, there will also be repercussions from those she had attacked while corrupted. Rei, Grune...Viral.]

What about you? Were you hurt?

You had warned me, and I chose to act. It's my duty in my home world to do so...it's not your fault at all.

"... That's crap, Sabriel. Just because you expect it of yourself, or because your world expects it of you, doesn't mean it can or will happen."

I gave her a level look.

"I have some experience in this arena."

[She ducks her head, suddenly struck by deja vu of when she had been chastised by her teacher for lighting the headmistress's rose bush on fire with a wayward spell.]

...Then how do you cope? How do you look at the people you care about, that you've hurt...knowing that what would have happened to them would have been worse than death if you hadn't been stopped?

"... I haven't been possessed before... but I have gotten people hurt. I've gotten people killed. I've gotten people into worse, even, than death. And the only thing I can do, the only thing you can do, is to remember that you did everything you could. That there was nothing you could have done better.

He stole my power. When he first possessed Helios. He used my magic to grow stronger, when he attacked. And that burned. That burned like hell. But I know that I helped to stop him, and that if I hadn't? Things might have gotten out of hand. And if you hadn't intervened, when you did, Adele and Lupin wouldn't be alive right now. Or if they were, they'd wish they weren't."

... And suddenly I realized that I was talking to her the same way I do to Molly, when there's something she needs to hear.

Weird. I think this whole mentor gig was starting to rub off on me.

[She had given it her all and there is nothing more she could have done. It's a rattling throw back to when Sabriel had been scratching up her hands trying to carve that memorial for her father. She had failed him; she had done her best and it wasn't enough. Bitter tears start to gather in her eyes and she hastily brushes them away, sagging lower against the wall as the rest of his words start to sink in.

If what happened to her was the price to be paid for saving Adele and Lupin's lives...would she have chosen to act differently?

It's just...frustrating. And it still hurts.

"Hey, easy. I know, kid. It is. And it does. Hold onto it, because it's gonna make it easier to find a new solution next time. Maybe next time, one less person gets hurt. One less defeat. One less loss."

I sighed.

"I guess it's a matter of remembering that you're going to fail sometimes. And learning to deal with that when it happens. It sucks beyond the telling, but sometimes you have to be okay with that."

I went for the easy smile again.

"All told, I think you did pretty good."

[Were she her usual self she would have taken issue with being called 'kid' but...right now it seems appropriate. Failure is not generally so lenient in her world...and yes, her current injuries are kind compared to what she would face in the Old Kingdom but it would be best not to argue the point. Luceti was not the Old Kingdom, for better or worse, and Sabriel had best get used to that fact real quick.

Glancing up she gives him a small, grateful nod, her expression pensive and still full of regret but there's a hint of determination.]

I can't keep relying on my Free magic here, not without the Charter to balance it. I'm not going to risk letting this happen to me again.

"Then I guess getting that, uh... Charter Stone...? Done ASAP needs to be our next priority, yeah?"
