[He's tired--don't verbally rough him up too hard.]

Shepard.
risingshepard: Alert. (Mulling it over.)

[His physical condition goes first. The lecture'll come soon enough. <_< ...Flipside, she's feeling a little deja vu from this conversation already.] How long 'til you're rested up? You looked like a damn mess back there.
redjacketthief: (focused--intently so)

[He sighed wearily, having heard the same question asked multiple times now by various parties.]

Dislocated shoulder with associated tissue damage. I'll need to have my arm immobilized for a few weeks, and it won't be back in full shape for a while--that's even with magicky help.

[He chuckled.] At least I tripped him up. That's worth something!

[Tripped him up. This guy nearly got himself a dislocated shoulder, and may have run the risk of getting killed, and he's settled in on how he tripped up that god from the other week.

There's room for silver lining, sure. But sometimes, even that's buried under the shadows of a black cloud.] It's good to know you're at least recovering, but you ran a hell of a risk back there, and I don't think that there was much worth getting from it. [Maybe she doesn't know the guy that was possessed. Maybe she didn't have the best grasp of the situation. But she sure as hell knows that saving him didn't have to mean overstraining yourself.]

[He's heard the lecture all ready, Shepard, and is amused at this point.]

It was either that or we send you to do the recon and leave ourselves unprotected. Sitting there wasn't going to help, and travelling in a group was even more risky. Adele isn't trained for situations like that, and is even more likely to get herself killed out of panic--I made an executive decision.

Still could have gotten you hurt -- which it did. [And he could have potentially gotten his mind destroyed, too, which made Shepard no less tense over Lupin's decisions.]

What the hell were you thinking, taking over where I could have gotten things done with less trouble? [She was resourceful enough. She just hasn't put that resourcefulness to good use yet, and under the circumstances, that probably wasn't an option.]

Shepard.

[Enough playing.]

Sending you would have left Adele and myself without protection in the event of an attack; sending Adele would have gotten her killed; and sending Artoo was too risky because we cannot repair him. I have twenty years of infiltration and reconnaissance experience, and a whole other set of memories from a different lifetime where I was doing the same thing.

I'm one of the few men in the village who can do that sort of thing, and one of only two who can do it entirely without powers. It was why I took the risk back in June--it was my idea, even though it's credited to someone else, and I knew the risks. The only other ones who can do this in the village are children or young adults, and they rely on powers or tech to do it.

Say what you want, Shepard. There was no good choice back there.

It had to be me.

[...Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down there. What?

Different timeline? What happened to this guy before she got here? ...Looks like it's time for a little investigation, much as she doesn't like the mess this guy's gotten himself into.]

...Now that you bring it up, you looked awfully militaristic when you did make that decision. [Because there's only one group she knows that dabbles in the ways of espionage so much...]

[Fuck.]

...you caught echoes of him too, huh?

[He sighed wearily, moderately annoyed with having to continue explanations.]

Back in April there was a Shifting accident were several people were 'reanchored' to different worlds, with a different set of memories from a different lifetime. I was anchored to Luke's world and timeline, and was heavily involved in assisting in the Rebellion. My skills were largely the same--hacking, sneaking, infiltrations--but they were used differently. I worked in intelligence, and did a lot of solo, under cover work.

We held the same rank, if you were curious. That's why if I ever refer to 'the Commander,' it's not you.
risingshepard: Alert. (Mulling it over.)

S' hard not to notice the sudden changes. [Watchful, this commander is.

...Still, she's not sure of whether or not she can trust her intently listening ears. A 'reanchoring'? So what, did that mean he'd forgotten entirely about his old world for the duration of that experience, or did he somehow go into it with all of those intact? ...From the sound of his story, it seems like the former was the more likely scenario. And now that she looks back on it, not once has he ever referred to him by rank; now she has the explanation for it.

...Lupin must be mentally kicking himself for having to tell so much. Thieves have a thing for being sneaky like that--it wouldn't surprise her.] Geez, one elephant after the other... Can't say I can wrap my head around this right.

[It wasn't an intensely private experience for him, and it was actually the Shift that he enjoyed the most during his stay. It left him with memories of a life that he could never have, and a deeper respect for Luke. He didn't mind speaking of it--records were in the journals if Shepard ever felt like digging, and the effects lingered among his friends. Sabriel and Aang still referred to him as Red, the Commander's preferred handle.

There were still moments when he wished that both lifetimes were equally valid, and he knew that the Commander felt the same.]

No one expects you to understand. This place is fucking weird, and it really screws with a person's mind. Just, next time? Believe me when I say that I'm the most qualified man for the job. Odds are high that I really am.
