It doesn't, but... I dunno. I always thought Captains kept their cool, looked like nothing was wrong and they had every idea of what they're doing. We're the ones that are supposed to not be nervous.

That just shows your Captains were good at bluffing. [She gives him a wry look.] Sometimes I think that might be half the job. What is it that has you nervous?

Truth be told, I've never been in a big ground skirmish like this. I'm trained for space tactics, you know? I've been learning hand to hand, but...

[Understanding flits through her gaze.] But it's not your area of expertise. I understand. How are you with weapons? Have you grabbed any of the guns from the armory, perhaps?

Yeah, I got some guns. I'm pretty okay with those, but like I said, I'm a strategist, really. I'm not used to it. I'm used to staring at giant ships, things without faces.

Yeah, I don't think there's going to be many of those in the jungle, unfortunately.

Yeah, no kidding. Easier to hide in a freakin' jungle too. At least in space it's harder to hide yourself, unless you're in an asteroid belt or something.

With how big space is, you'd think it would be much easier.

You would think that, but an object in space is easier to detect than not. There's not around it, so something be there is enough to raise brows, you know?

I'll take your word for it. It just seems like an awful lot of area to be watching.

[personal profile] universal_charm 2013-04-04 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, not all the time, but there's only so many places you can really go. At least, if you're looking for someone. Known planets and quadrants. I'm on a mission to discover new places, so it's a bit different for me, but otherwise you tend to stick to the mapped sections.

[personal profile] widows_kiss 2013-04-04 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but if you were trying to hide in space, why would you go where there's people? Why a planet? Why not just head out into the middle of nothing?

What happens when you need to restock? What happens if something goes wrong with your ship? Better to be close to some intelligent life than none.

[personal profile] widows_kiss 2013-04-05 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I suppose it wouldn't work so well in the long term. Then again, most people usually look for a more temporary solution when hiding out.

[personal profile] universal_charm 2013-04-05 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, to a point. But it's hard enough to get off planet without detection anyways, or come near one as it is. Space ships are heavily monitored going in and out of atmo.

[personal profile] universal_charm 2013-04-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, who knows what they could be carrying? Space ships are huge, and the payloads could be devastating, not to mention what do they have in the cargos? Animals? Plants? Some new disease? And what if they're from some planet we're not on friendly terms with? Yeah, we monitor them.

[She pauses to think about it a moment, because thinking security on a planetary scale was not something she was used to. It sounded like it would be a pain in the ass.]

Bigger universe. A whole lot more assholes trying to screw things up for everyone. Sounds like fun.

Yeah, basically. Romulans are on okay terms with us, and Klingons are... an interesting bunch. Our best friends are the Vulcans, I'd say, then a host of others. And then you just have your normal every-day dirt bags on Earth. Ships are damned expensive, but war birds are war birds.

Just crashing the thing into a land mass would do enough damage to raise ever klaxon in every country across the globe.
