Firmer grip.

[The words come from a young woman who happened upon him while he was training with the sword.]

Not too hard, but you can't be afraid to really grab it. It has to be like just another part of your body.

[He adjusts his grip automatically at the instruction before turning to look at who gave it. When he does, he smiles and nods his thanks.]

I'm used to fighting unarmed or with throwing knives. The sword is new.

I use throwing knives mostly. [And they're displayed up and down her chest, each one in its own spot on her vest. A hunting knife sits on her hip.]

But I learned a little about how to use a sword. And someone I know uses one pretty well. You don't look too bad at it.

[He'll take 'don't look too bad at it' as a very genuine compliment and grin at her.]

Thanks!

I had a little bit of basic training with it. Not much. I mostly wanted the sword in case I run out of knives while a Shifter's nearby.

How many knives you carry at a time?
16autumnroad: (team 10)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I have about twenty on me right now. [His weapons are mostly in pouches strapped to each leg. The vest he's wearing has pockets that are obviously used for something, too.] There were more, but my teammate lost his chance to prepare before the draft. I shared.

And you think you'll run out?

[Clove's armed with twelve -- thirteen if the hunting knife on her hip can be counted.]
16autumnroad: (ponder)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-01 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope not, but I'd rather be prepared for anything.

[He may not have time to retrieve them once used, and Chouji doesn't harbor delusions about how many people he's likely to kill during multiple days of fighting. He doesn't want to kill for someone else's cause, but he has friends here. Their safety is cause enough for him.

Chouji's also never had to ration weapons as carefully as Clove has.]

Especially since my unarmed techniques may not work here.

[personal profile] shenevermisses 2013-04-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What sort of techniques?

[That's one thing Clove's come to consider extremely fascinating. She's never seen anything quite like the way some people here fight, and the sheer variety of it is stunning. So, she'll take the chance to learn about others.]

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I can change the size of part or all of my body.

[Not much point keeping techniques secret when they'll all be on a battlefield tomorrow. Chouji will probably wind up towering over everyone at some point. He demonstrates, one fist and arm growing to far greater than their usual size.]

Punches are much more effective that way. I can also shape my body into a giant ball and roll over people. [Now with added lethal effect due to his ability to harden his hair into spikes.]

[Clove just... stares.

More human-looking muttations. Though, hey, at least they're on the same side. For now. This sort of thing? Is exactly what she expects turned against her any day.]

That's... amazing.

[Chouji has a big smile on his face at this compliment too.]

Thank you! It's a family technique. Every shinobi in my clan learns how.

Shifters can cancel it, though, and I've never dealt with them before. Hence the caution. And the sword.

[personal profile] shenevermisses 2013-04-03 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never dealt with a Shifter before, I don't think. [Not that she'd actually know if she had. Her skills aren't cancelled out.]

What's a shinobi?

A ninja. We live in hidden villages and train to fight. Once we earn this, [He taps his forehead protector] we leave the Academy and are sent out on missions. For the sake of either protecting the village and surrounding country or earning money to sustain it.
Edited (I forgot what he was wearing at his canonpoint. No home village symbol.) 2013-04-04 02:27 (UTC)

I went to an academy to learn to fight. Not the same thing, but... It's nice when I hear other people learned that sort of thing, too.

When did you start training? What age?
16autumnroad: (leap into action)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-08 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I guess some things are the same even in different worlds. I haven't been here long enough to know how common things like that are.

The typical Academy entrance age is six or seven years old, and graduation happens around twelve. One or two people who are particularly talented manage it much younger, though.

Only a little of my training before starting school was physical. My father talked a lot about responsibility to the clan and the village.

We start very basic training at five. [She actually smiles. Because it's something familiar. Even if it's different, too.]

Ours is almost all physical and combat, but we do learn about bringing glory to our district, that sort of thing.
16autumnroad: (grin)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-08 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
[He notices the smile, because it's the first time he's seen it from her. Chouji can't help but answer with his own.]

We learn history, mathematics, geography, and things like that along with fighting. I'd rather just know how it feels to throw the kunai properly than try and calculate speed and angles through math problems.

[personal profile] shenevermisses 2013-04-08 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We have a few other lessons, but that's only for about an hour or two a day. The other seven are all combat related. But there's not much history to teach, I guess, and we don't really learn more than what we need to know about the other Districts.
16autumnroad: (ponder)

[personal profile] 16autumnroad 2013-04-14 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Districts? Why isn't there much history to learn?

[Seven combat-related lessons seems like a lot, but he supposes it depends on how the divisions fall between them. It probably all equals out in the end. She was amazed by the ninjutsu, though, so maybe there's nothing similar where she comes from.]

What areas of combat did they train you in? Throwing knives, I'll assume. We had that one too, and unarmed fighting such as punches and kicks.
shenevermisses: (Predator instincts)

[personal profile] shenevermisses 2013-04-20 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
We know about the formation of Panem, the specialities of each district, the Dark Days, and the treaty that ended them. I guess the people in the Capitol figure we don't really need to know more.

[She perks up a little when he mentions the combat, thinking over it.]

Well, we learn unarmed combat, but we're usually taught not to rely on that in the Games. Just for emergencies. Broadswords, short swords, fighting knives, throwing knives, staffs, maces, axes, archery, spears. They sort of cycle through a lot of weapons when we just start, and then see what we have a knack for.

My primary weapons became my throwing knives, though I'm pretty decent with a mace and short sword.

What was your District's specialty?

We learn techniques using chakra in addition to that, like the one I showed you. My clan are the only ones with that particular technique, though.

I have more experience with knives, wire, and exploding tags than other weapons, but my family's ability gives me an advantage that most people don't have in unarmed combat. [Because when your fist is the size of someone's torso, it isn't very difficult to do huge amounts of damage with only that.]

Masonry. Mining and crafting granite and marble, things like that. Most of the buildings in Panem -- especially the official ones -- were built by those of us who travel to see them constructed.

Though... all that's kind of boring compared to your family, it sounds like.
