heartofthematter: (77 and then we will)

Huh? [... oh.] Oh, I meant one the size of a blanket! Though a blanket puzzle sounds cool too.
reminded: (My word!)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-17 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh!

[Let him take that in for a moment.]

That's... a very large puzzle. But there's nothing wrong with ambition, I suppose.
heartofthematter: (65 it's not really the end)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-17 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah. Something to give to Missy and Pearl. They could work on it together~.]

I don't really know if I could make one that size... But I kind of want to, so Pearl and Missy can work on it together. Do you think it's possible? How many numbers would I need? [He'd probably need help HAHA....]
reminded: (I think I'm beginning to see...)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-17 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be possible, I'm sure, but it would require a great deal of numbers indeed. [Going into the double digits... or maybe even triple digits? How feasible would this be...]

If it's a collaborative challenge you're looking for, perhaps a very large maze could be another idea.
heartofthematter: (37 and one for all)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-17 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A very large maze?

[Hmmm. Sounds like a lot of work.]
reminded: (kira kira)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-17 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[As much work as a 100x100 Latin square...?]

Just an idea. You've done mazes on paper before, yes? They can only be so difficult. But when you make one as large as a bedspread...
heartofthematter: (12 you gotta do the cooking)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Never said he wouldn't do it!!]

Then it'll take a long time! That's a good idea.
reminded: (s'all cool)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-18 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Er, that's one way of putting it, yes. It won't be as simple as your average maze.

[He nods down at the pages in Diamond's hands.] But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Before you can decide on giant mazes or squares, you'll have to solve the ones right in front of you.
heartofthematter: (57 you gotta know you can make it)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-18 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[He looks down in minor disappointed, but that sharpens up to determination and he nods.]

Got it. Just try one number at a time until it's the right one, right? I can do that! [Yeah, let's solve puzzles!]
reminded: (I have it!)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-18 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the right attitude. Take it one clue at a time.

[Latin squares are a good metaphor for mystery-solving, actually.]
heartofthematter: (46 if things don't work on your own)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-18 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Right! He'll just be using the strategy suggested to him, going slow so he doesn't miss one. He's a steady worker and it's fun.]
reminded: (This is a tricky one...)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-19 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Darn tootin' it's fun. As they plod on with their puzzles, Layton becomes increasingly drawn into his puzzling, bending over his notepad in concentration. Sudoku, man. Sudoku.]
heartofthematter: (16 the cake will end up crazy)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh man, you're really going at it Professor. Diamond pauses in his finishing to watch Layton.]
reminded: (Well that's one possibility eliminated.)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-20 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
[The arrangement seems sound as is, but if he removes this cell and knocks it down to 20 givens, the difficulty would ramp up by quite a bit. But deleting it might make this clue over here overly ambiguous. Maybe it would be better to take away this cell over here instead...? 1, 3, 7, 8... No, that won't do either. 2, 4, 5, 7... 1 or 3 or 8, 1 or 6 or 9, 3 or 6 or 8 or 9... The top and bottom rows are no help, but the adjacent columns perhaps...]
heartofthematter: (05 i'll put in some ingredients)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-25 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[...

...

Diamond thinks he's got it.]

Add another line? [If it doesn't work one way, just add on. That's how he sees it.]
reminded: (oh god)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-26 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Er... as in another row or column?

[He's not sure he heard that right.]
heartofthematter: (05 i'll put in some ingredients)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-28 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[which ones goes which way UHHHH he makes a vertical motion with his finger. Yeah.]

A line going like this.
reminded: (Aha... Yes...)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
...

[He looks down at his sudoku square. This is gonna shoot it to hell, isn't it. But he'll do it for you, Diamond. For you...... He uncertainly draws... a new column...]

......
heartofthematter: (19 we gotta have it made)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-29 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah!! You go, Layton! Diamond beams, and studies it.

Hm.]

Another one?
reminded: (oh god)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-30 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Er... another?

[Unsure. So unsure. But he has always believed in learning from your mistakes, so... another it is...!]

It looks a bit... unbalanced now, don't you think?
heartofthematter: (85 and everyone knows)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-04-30 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
[It certainly does. But Diamond's very firm:]

Another.

[He is very much twelve at this point of time.]
reminded: (Well that's one possibility eliminated.)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-04-30 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Where will the madness end??]

Very well...

[Here is your third column, you monster. At least the dimensions are in multiples of 3 again.]
reminded: (This is a tricky one...)

[personal profile] reminded 2013-05-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...... Not quite. See here: if I try to fill in numbers for these new cells, what problem arises? I used numbers one through nine previously, but there are now more than nine cells per row.
heartofthematter: (22 making food is just like science)

[personal profile] heartofthematter 2013-05-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[...]

Oh... So we'll have to use twelve numbers!

[yes.]
