This post covers the first day, before the attack. Remember, characters here are not expecting an attack and are under the impression they will be going to Region 1 to fight. During this day, draftees will be restricted to T6 and T7 and not permitted access to other areas.

"A place to channel his guilt. A purpose. Most importantly, I suppose, a mission. Tangible baddies to fight and a place where he could try and belong."

"Ah, and he lacked those things before?" Well, different universes, he supposed. He knew he had a soul of his own, and it had never done any of those things for him. Well, he didn't bother with guilt even to begin with.

[herotypical]

"I suppose so. You gotta understand, I didn't...I mean -- I'm taking his word for it. He got his soul back a century before I ever met him. And it took him that long to figure out what to do with himself. It's..."

There had been a time, of course, when she had seen him sans-soul. But she wasn't going to mention that. "The way he tells it, all before was nihilism."

[complicatedliar]

"Ah. I see. So you wouldn't necessarily know the answers to more detailed questions. 'Tis fair enough."

He snorts. "Ah. Nihilism. I have heard vampires seem to have a thing about that across universes. Interesting commonalities."

[herotypical]

"They certainly have a knack for wanting to end the world..." She said with a whole lot of pointed sarcasm she didn't realize he couldn't hear.

[complicatedliar]

"That is what I do not understand. Why would one want to end the world? It is where one... ah... keeps one's things. And if there's the normal sort of villainous goals, destroying a world is very counterproductive in light of trying to rule it or enslave humanity or make all the ice cream go sour or whatever it is bad people do."

[herotypical]

"You do understand the point of being nihilistic, right? It's not about wants or goals."

[complicatedliar]

"I think I must not. I don't really comprehend not having an overriding goal. Unless it's a matter of stupidity, I suppose."

[herotypical]

"In Angel's case, the history books said he really liked to play the scourge. Massacres. Torture. Terror. Grand plots to raise terrible demons. Baby-eating."

[complicatedliar]

"But to what end?"

[herotypical]

"Chaos. Debauchery. Appetite. His soulless self isn't someone whose motives I try too hard to dissect, to be honest."

[complicatedliar]

"All a bit animal and boring, really." Loki shrugged. "Well, except the bit about chaos. That can be rather fun."

[herotypical]

"...Boring right up until the point where you're the recipient of all that chaos and debauchery and...appetite."

[complicatedliar]

"So if vampires are this odious, why do mortals constantly write books about them with... nauseating covers?"

[herotypical]

"...'Cause there's always gonna be that one idiot who's desperate to fall in love with a vamp."

[complicatedliar]

"Apparently there's quite a few such idiots."

[herotypical]

"And every last one of them are gonna end up with their hearts broken."

She should know; it's happened twice.

[complicatedliar]

"Better broken if also uneaten, yes?"

[herotypical]

Buffy tilted her head and revealed the scars of what must be at least two separate biting incidents on her neck. "I wouldn't know. It's been a long time since I've been unbitten."

[complicatedliar]

He leaned forward to take a better look, but made no move to touch. "Ah. But still alive and with your soul, so one assumes you... got better." He straightened, one hand coming up to rub the opposite wrist. "Scars always tell such charming stories."

[herotypical]

"You never turn with just a bite. It's a whole...co-sucking thing. Very gross."

Buffy allowed her hair to fall back into place. She was rarely ashamed of her bites, these days. Sometimes, they were cautionary tales she needed to tell. Sometimes, the proved the depth of her experience. Sometimes, she was simply in a decent mood.

Her attention flickered to his wrist, since attention had been brought to it. "I don't like them. On me, I mean. Other people can get as marked up as they want. That's their prerogative."

[complicatedliar]

"That sounds very unsanitary." Loki's lips curled with distaste. "I'd read Dracula and hoped that bit was made up."

He caught the movement of his gaze, and pulled his hand away, almost guiltily. "I'm not terribly enamored of my own. Because scars do speak of their origin, often when one would rather remain silent."

[herotypical]

"A lot of Dracula was made up. But not that part. In fact..." But Buffy trailed off, as though she thought better of finishing her sentence. Her evasion was made easier by Loki's next statement.

"Do they? I dunno. You could make up anything. I once told a guy I just got bit by an angry puppy. People will believe a whole lot of BS."

[complicatedliar]

"In fact?"

Loki shook his head. "Oh, most people will take whatever plot you give them. 'Tis easier than thinking, yes? But to one who knows how to read such things, it is very plain." He flicked a finger toward her neck. "You'd never fool me with that lie, for example. Dogs don't bite like that."

"...Then let's all breathe a sigh of relief that one jerk of a frat boy was less clever on that subject than you are."
