TERRACE Draft - Remaining Days

[In the meantime Mia cast one small spell, and thanks to that, Pilouette's patient looks to be in far less pain than he was a few moments ago.]

Then I will get out of your way here.

[She doesn't go far - just a step or two. This is not an emergency and it's something she can handle on her own if she remembers not to think too far ahead.]

Uh...!

[When Mia steps back, Pilouette looks to her for a moment, before giving a firm nod and turning back to her patient. Asking him to hold still, she begins fitting the splint to his arm, trying her best not to move his arm too much.]

[For the most part, Mia just watches, keeping an ear out for any new emergency that might arise elsewhere in the area. Pilouette can handle this; she might need only the encouragement of having someone there just in case.]

[After fitting the splint, Pilouette begins to wrap it with bandages. She's going slowly, partially to make sure she does it properly and partially due to her own anxiety. She looks for Mia briefly, as if looking for reassurance.]

[She's doing fine. Mia wears a supportive smile, and moves to the other side of Pilouette's patient in order to ask him quietly if he has any other injuries.]

[Pilouette smiles, just a bit and begins to wrap the bandages a little faster, feeling just a little more confident. It helps that the man is distracted by Mia's questioning.

She secures the bandages, before picking up the washcloth and cold pack, not quite sure how to get their attention and let them know she's finished.]

Uh...!

[What an awful place for a first real test-run of doing this sort of thing, Mia thinks. She was watching, though, and in the absence of anything else they can do for this man...well, that's about that.]

We probably can't stop you from going back to the fight if you really want to go, but at least rest your arm for a while and try not to use it. Others might be available later to heal it again. [They are all very busy, at the moment, and more people keep showing up.]

[Pilouette looks to Mia as she speaks, still a little amazed at how calm she seems to be. She nods in agreement with Mia, then hurriedly wraps the cold pack in the washcloth and holds it toward him.]

H-Here! Um, this should help a little bit, too! S-So that it doesn't swell or anything!

[Mia seems satisfied when he takes it and goes. Once he's safely out of earshot, she steps closer to Pilouette and lowers her voice a bit.]

How are you doing here? [Be honest.]

W-Well, I'm uh, okay, I guess.

[Her shoulders slump, just a little.]

...Actually, I still pretty nervous, I guess. I thought I could remember everything just fine, but once everything started...It' just, I've never been in a place where I had to see so many people hurt or...

[Or dying.]

It just totally freaks me out.

A little nervousness keeps you from making quick and wrong decisions. I would be more concerned if you were too confident to be nervous. And you did a good job just now.

[Lift those shoulders right back up, missy. Or Mia will do it for her, one hand on each.]

It is all right to take a break and collect yourself when you need to. Especially when you're learning, and for whatever reason no one managed to be nearby to help you with problems.

[At the words "good job," Pilouette straightens up a little. It's nice to hear some praise, deflecting some of the doubts she has towards herself. She nods, her expression relaxing a bit.]

I guess that's right...If I don't stop to clear my head when I need to I'll just end up making stuff worse, huh?

You certainly won't be able to do your best. How much have you done?

[If Mia has learned anything about Pilouette over the past several months, it's that a 'good job' can go a long way.]

Uh...I haven't done much. Mostly, I've just been getting supplies for other people or holding things while someone else worked on an injury. Bandages and that kinda thing. And, um, redoing bandages that were loose or dirty.

I that broken wrist just now was the biggest thing I've done on my own. Or...well, kind of on my own.

On your own enough. What do you think about all of this?

[She kind of stares at Mia, as if being asked her opinion on such important things is somewhat foreign to her. The gears in her head start to turn. What does she think about this...?]

Well...um...

[With an ear on the other action in the room, Mia waits patiently for her answer. Goodness, she looks so surprised.]

[Pilouette looks about the room for a few seconds, as if still trying to form an opinion. She looks back to Mia before she replies.]

It's...It's kind of scary. Being involved in a war like this is...well...you know. But if we don't help the Malnosso with this, it would be even worse for everyone. S-So I guess it's important that everyone does what they can, but...

[She looks around once more. Medical staff trying to treat injuries. People who have gotten sick, some of which are only getting worse. Combatants who have only just been treated and are already rushing back into the fray.]

...There's really only so much we can do, isn't there?

It is difficult, if not impossible, to stop certain types of people from fighting dangerously. [More dangerously than usual fighting. The kind of fighting where you are already injured or are doing some stupid risk-taking and then you get hurt. More than once.] So, yes, I suppose there is 'only so much' we can do.

Imagine how it would be if we didn't.

[She can imagine that. Suddenly, Pilouette realizes just how important the work they're doing, that she's trying to do, is.]

Yeah...anything we can do, even if it's not a lot sometimes...It all means a lot. Even a little bit is the difference between someone getting better or getting worse, huh?

You are only allowed to think of that if it will cause you less worry, and not more. [She's joking. It's an important realization to have even though it adds a lot more weight to being any variant of healer.]

Why do you think you can't learn to use the magic native to this world?

...Well, where I come from, there's no such thing as magic or anything like that. Not really, anyway. Besides, you have to be really...

[Smart, confident, special...]

...strong to use magic and stuff, right? I don't think I've even been going to the school's magic classes for a while, anyway. Maybe it's better if I just focus on this kind of stuff instead. You know, regular first aid.

Where I come from, there is no such thing as a microwave. ...Maybe that's a bad example. I'm not very good at using it, still.

You may focus on whatever works best for you. ...But you are strong.

Magic isn't like a machine, though. A machine really only works one way, right? Magic is more like...um...Hmm. Actually, I don't really know what magic is like.

[Pilouette lets out a small, uneasy chuckle. She still doesn't quite believe that she's strong...but it's nice to hear. She glances at her first aid kit. The lessons of a respected teacher, a momento of a friend...and many lessons yet to learned.]

Well...maybe. But I don't think I'm really strong enough yet. I still have a lot of work to do, I think.

When you start thinking you're strong enough, I'll start to worry. [Like they are making an agreement. Almost nobody ever thinks they're strong enough.]

Why don't you give yourself a short break, for now?
