TERRACE Draft - Remaining Days

Her range was longer than his, he knew that would be the case right off. He'd just have to even up the count once they got closer.

"I'll go ahead and let you count that one for your total. You'll need the help."

And then they came, dotting the sky as they came closer and closer.

"Total?" One eyebrow quirks upwards. "Total what? You're not actually..." Ohhh, apparently he was. She glanced at the downed cultists once more, then the approaching attackers before shooting him a mischievous grin.

"Oh, you're on."

He smirked and pulled out two slick, black boomerangs for each hand. They were thicker than his trusty blue one, but still had a razors edge. Once he was confident the horde was close enough, he folded his hands around either side of hims, then flung them out to send the boomerangs flying. They whirled through the air with whistling speed until they found their targets. One landed right in a cultist's chest and immediately exploded, taking him out and injuring one next to him. The other tore through another cultist's wings before exploding in open air with the blast wave knocking two others out of the air.

"I call those Bomberangs."

Artemis watches with an appreciative look, because he hadn't mentioned his boomerangs exploded. "Not too shabby, I admit. Except don't you run out of them awfully fast that way? They're kinda big, to carry a bunch of them."

Her tone is still teasing as she plucks a particular arrow out of her quiver. It's got a thick rounded tip - blunt rather than sharp - and she takes aim right for the middle of the approaching swarm of cultists. When she looses it, it flies straight for the center, not aimed at any particular attacker. But when it gets in the midst of them, the tip explodes outwards, sending a deadly burst of tiny darts and shrapnel. Several bodies tumble and Artemis already has arrows lined up to drop the ones who'd only been slowed by the blast and sends three flying simultaneously to finish the task.

Okay, that was actually pretty good. Like Longshot levels of good, only with arrows more impressive than he expected.

"They're easy to replace. Besides, I could say the same about your arrows."

This time he went for his classic boomerang, blue and reliable. He took only a moment to judge the wind, then sent it flying. It wouldn't kill them, sure, but he had positioned the angle so it tore through the wings of one- two -four cultists before it made its return arc. Injuries just enough to cause them to lose their momentum and ability to fly correctly. Some crashed into others, some were forced to land. But it thinned the flock a bit, which was good, because they were going to be in hand-to-hand combat range soon.

Sokka caught the boomerang and offered a smug grin. "I'm a big fan of the classics."

"My arrows are light and easy to carry in bulk," she pointed out wryly, watching him work and returning his smirk with one of her own. "Which is why I was so glad to get my quiver back."

She reaches for another particular arrow, one with an electrical tip. She shoots it at a cluster of approaching cultists still in the air, knowing the charge, when it impacts, will travel among them, arcing with current. She's noted that they're slower on the ground and getting as many of them out of the air as they can will help both of them from getting overwhelmed.

Sokka had an electric boomerang, using one of Leon's crests. But after seeing how much of an effect her arrow had, he decided not to use it. The charge if carried may have been able to deliver a decent jolt, but nothing quite like that. So he used his trusty boomerang to clip a few more wings before the cultists touched ground.

"How does your arrow carry that much charge? That was great!"

And now the cultists had hit the ground. He drew his sword.

[Artemis's smile turned faintly wistful as she reached for a cluster of arrows. The cultists on the ground were closing in on them.]

A friend designed it for me. He's good with technology. It's actually several small timed releases that feed the charge, spreads it farther. It just happens really fast.

[She lines up several shots on her bow at the cultists rushing towards them, releasing the shot to take down the first wave of them. Two dropped to the ground, the third staggered with an arrow imbedded in his shoulder.] We've got incoming.

He gave her one last look before going into the fray. "Any chance of making more?"

He didn't expect Artemis to be that useful in close combat, so once the cultists were in range, he began to tear into them with his sword. Ruthlessly and with cold, hateful eyes. He was counting on her to keep firing arrows and keep him from being overwhelmed, but he wasn't counting on it. There was no chance of coming out of his injured and he took a blow to the left shoulder from the second cultist. It would slow him down, but not stop him. They were coming in slow, but they were still tough for anyone not lucky enough to have superpowers. But with only two of them, they couldn't afford to get stuck on the defensive, otherwise they'd be quickly overwhelmed.

"Maybe. I can probably manage it, if I can get the right equipment."

There's no time left for talking, especially when he wades right into the middle of them, sword slicing through the cultists with deadly accuracy. It makes her targeting difficult but she doesn't hesitate, taking every clear shot she can get. Sometimes she only cripples, but that's better than nothing and as often as she can, she drops them before they can overwhelm Sokka.

She sees another cluster drop down nearby. Reinforcements. She reacts instinctively, reaching for one of her special arrows and launching it at them without hesitation. The tip bursts when its still above them, dropping a net made of sticky residue over three of them, trapping them in place.

For a moment, he stopped and looked up in surprise to see a net of all things pop out of her arrow. It nearly got him caught off guard, but he elbowed a cultist in the face and whirled around to face her.

"A net arrow!?" He spun himself back around, driving his blade into a cultist's throat. That was the last of them on the roof.

Artemis laughs at his surprise, shooting him a smirk. "I did tell you I had a few tricks up my sleeve, didn't I? Figured I might as well put some effort into this contest of ours."

"Right, very clever. Now, if you wouldn't mind?" He gestured at the next wave of incoming baddies.

"Keep your pants on, Boomerang Boy," she snorted, eyeing the narrow street the cultists were currently rushing down towards them. She plucked an arrow from her quiver and aimed and loosed. It landed several feet short of any of the approaching attackers, but as the arrow imbedded in the ground, it splashed out a puddle around it, coating the alley width with the same sticky substance that had composed her net. It wouldn't stop them entirely but it would slow them up enough that they could pick them off a little easier without getting overwhelmed.

Her gaze flicked sideways at Sokka. "Wanna thin the herd some or are you gonna let me do all the work?"

He'd been watching with keen interest as he'd discovered that any one of her arrows could be something different and unexpected. He wondered if she had a way of telling them apart or if it was random. At her insistence to help, he replied: "Hey, I'm old. I need to take breaks sometimes."

In spite of that, he plucked out another boomerang, this one painted gray, and threw it at the feet of the cultists. Instead of exploding, it released a cloud of smoke laced with pepper. He turned back to Artemis. "Actually, would Bangerang work better for the explosive one?"

"I am not calling you Bangerang Boy, that just sounds weird." She draws a few more arrows, hesitating to make out the shapes she can just barely see through the cloud of smoke, able to hear the trapped cultists better than she can see them. She unleashes, hears the resulting fall of bodies and reaches for another shot.

"Also, pepper in the smoke? That's just cruel. I like it."

In the meantime, Sokka waits for her to fire her arrows before sending out one last explosive boomerang. Then it'll be back to the sword again.

"First off, I don't need a nickname. Secondly, I got the idea from something called pepper spray. They hate that stuff."

"Everybody hates that stuff," she counters with a snicker, glancing over at him. "And see, now you need a nickname just because you went and said that."

"Yeah, well do you have one? You got that whole superhero costume thing going on, after all." It was an alien concept to his world, but he'd seen the likes of Batman, Robin, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and other costumed weirdos.

"I just go by Artemis. Keeps things simple," she answered mildly, taking aim again and using that as distraction enough to keep her from fidgeting. There's secrets there, of course, but not anything that really applies to here in Luceti. No one knows who she is here, not even Robin. "Besides, I fly pretty low under the radar most of the time anyway.'

"So basically you're not a very big superhero. Good to know."

He drew his sword and clashed with the few cultists that had made it through all the arrows. There were just two left now. One he sliced along the chest, the second he twirled his sword around backwards to stab in the gut, and then kicked the first one to the ground. A quick blow to the heart ended that one.

"Looks like we're all done here."

"Personally, I think being a big superhero's overrated," she countered, sending off one last volley, taking down the last of the cultists with him. "That just means there's more people out trying to destroy you."

She watched him finish off the last two with calculated ease, giving a low whistle at the movement. She folded her bow and tucked it away, propping her hands on her hips as she regarded him steadily.

"Looks like we are."

Sokka moved to the side of the building and sat down, dangling his feet over the edge. He paid no mind to the corpses they'd left behind, but instead took the time to clean his blade.

"Well in this world, there's the same amount of people trying to kill you no matter what. So that should make you feel better."

"Oh, tons."

She rolls her eyes and after a moment of hesitation, moves to drop down beside him. She checked her quiver, counting her arrows, but she had enough of a supply with her, and more back in her supplies for later. Although if this attack ran longer than a few days, she was going to be in trouble.

She shot him a sideways look. "Are there people trying to kill you frequently?"

"You mean back home? Not so much now. During the war, it was kind of a regular thing."

But he'd hardly gotten used to the idea of a peaceful world when he came to Luceti.
