[For a historic hero? She may actually answer them!

Mars nods and looks down at the pile of mechanical trouble, tossing a burst of flame down on top of them to make sure the crates and things burn up. It'll make it more difficult for them to reach, at least. Then she darts over to the edge of the roof, surveying the scene.]

Help me find the shifter, if you can spot him. We don't have long, so we've got to make this fast!

[Souji runs over and crouches down at the edge of the roof and starts scanning the area below them. He's looking for anywhere that seems strange, anyplace that has lights flickering or out, somewhere that magic doesn't seem to work...

The sounds of mechanical whirring as the droids continue their attempts at reaching the roof below reach his ears and he frowns. Even with the fire below, the droids aren't stopping. It's what happens when your enemy doesn't understand pain.

A light flickers to the northeast, just over a small shop awning, and Souji turns his attention there. Another lightbulb goes out just a foot away and he points.]

There. Something is moving under the awning.

[She follows his finger, nodding. If magic won't work, then she'll have to use one of those arrows. Thankfully, she has four chances at this, and the bow is quite strong. She readies it, peering closer until she sees her target. Pulling back a shot, she steadies herself and takes a shooting stance.

And just as she's about to fire, a droid manages to scramble up onto the roof, breaking her concentration. The shot goes wild.

3 left. But she's already drawing the second.]

Keep them off me.

[ahappylie]

I'm on it!

[Souji stands and rushes the droid as it starts to stand up, slamming his shoulder against it just before it gets its balance to throw it back to the ground.

Another has already climbed up, however, and he draws his sword, deflecting a wild blow aimed at his head. The force of the blow throws him a little off balance, but he drops low, sliding under the droid's arm and slicing up at the cords and gears attaching the arm to the body.

The one from before is already climbing back up and Souji grimaces. New forces are joining them below - likely reinforcements from the same shifter.]

[Rei pulls back the bow a second time, concentrating on the target and ignoring the distractions. She's got one of the Shinsengumi at her back. He can't hold out forever, she knows that, but he's given her the time she needs. More and more droids manage to get up the wall, surrounding Souji...and there isn't much time.

But she feels out for the flame and void, the inner oneness with her past self, and lets the shaft fly. It spirals through the air towards the shifter...

And buries itself in it's eye. The droids crumple all around them, and Mars looks back at Okita with a triumphant look in her eye.]

I got him.

[ahappylie]

[He can only do so much with a sword against men made of metal, but he tries his best to keep their attention on him and not on her. When they climb up, he kicks them down. If they get onto the roof, he cuts their limbs. Killing them would take too long, possibly break his sword, so he focuses on taking out their joints and dropping them to the ground at the very least.

But there's too many and he ducks under one blow, turning to see another fist coming at him when--

Everything stops and the droids drop to the rooftop and the ground, clanging their way down like muddled bells.

Souji's breathing hard as he looks back at Mars, the triumphant look on her face all he needs to know. He smiles at her, straightening slowly.]

I knew you would.

[faithfulflame]

[She gives the man a small smile, nodding and reverting to her civilian form. It was easier to talk this way, and she felt less self-conscious around him in the miko's uniform than the senshi's outfit. Holding her bow in front of her she bows deeply]

I thank you for your faith in me, Okita-san.

[ahappylie]

[He shakes his head and smiles at her, still wondering at that transformation. She looks like herself now - someone he can recognize - and the switch is almost as jarring as the powers she displayed earlier.]

Oh, you needn't thank me for that.

Is that why you asked me not to be surprised, though? You becoming a different person?

[faithfulflame]

It is. Some people are surprised by it. And...it's not something I share outside of desperate situations.

[ahappylie]

Ah....So it is something I should keep secret, yes?

[faithfulflame]

Yes. yes it is. It's important. So please.

[Her earnestness is almost surprising and Souji watches her for a moment. This was something that her life depended on, something that had deeper roots than simply keeping a secret.

He couldn't help but want to know more, but this wasn't the place to ask.]

[The moment passes and Souji smiles again.]

Only if you promise to let me come by for other reasons than to pray at the shrine.

[It's a joke, just teasing, and his smile says it all - a silent acknowledgement of the severity of her secret and the vow of silence Souji will forever take.]

[She's grateful for his understanding. It's hard for her to trust anyone, particularly men, but the unspoken promise is more than appreciated. Internally she's sighing with relief, and she's somewhat happy too. She enjoys his company, but betraying her trust would've broken that beyond repair.]

I promise. I'd love to have you, and the shrine is open to anyone who wishes it.

If you don't mind, I may stop in after this draft ends. For the ones I told you about before.

I will look for you in a few days then.

[Unless something bad happens to one of them.]

You...though, look tired and I need to resupply. I think it might be best if we returned to a safe zone for the moment.

[He looks tired? Souji looks at himself, spots of oil and dirt covering his haori and his tabi, and feels his stomach turn. He does need to go back, maybe not to rest even if he should, but for a cleaning. He can't stand the dirt and grime.]

Yes, that would be wise. I think we can get back by using the rooftops from here.

[faithfulflame]

Yes. Lets.

[She'll start to head that way...and away they go?]
