TERRACE Draft - Remaining Days

I am terribly sorry, my darling Vastra, but I can no longer contain myself. And so on.

[He raises an eyebrow.]

Now, I understand you're a bit angry, but that seems rather extreme.

Well at least continue to contain yourself in front of my wife, for God's sake. [Vastra looks exasperated and rubs her face a little, trying to ease the sting. The wheels appear to be turning in her head as she contemplates the carpet.]

Love is an extreme thing, Loki. For the sake of my marriage, it would be best to kill you. I'm sure you would do the same to me, after all. And if you are in fact the Dream Lord, so much the better. Fetch the swords for me, would you dear?

[Jenny shoots Loki a triumphant smile and goes to the nearby cabinet on the wall.]

[This is so absurd, he's having a hard time keeping a straight face. There's certainly amusement showing in his eyes.] Well, I suppose rather than suffer terribly from a broken heart, I ought to let you do it without a fight.

That would be very convenient, yes. However I know this will probably be much harder than you're leading me to believe. You are, potentially, a notorious murderer, after all. [Jenny comes back with the swords, two of them, Vastra takes the one she showed Loki earlier in the draft.] Ah, thank you dear.

[Almost too fast to catch, Vastra's tongue darts out of her head and stings Jenny right on her jugular. A heartbeat passes, Vastra unsheathes the sword, Jenny crumples to the ground. The poison should be enough for a human, and seems to have been working just fine on the cultists, but this situation could turn deadly in a second. With her eyes closed, and with the deftness of an executioner, Vastra drives her sword down into Jenny's--the enemy's--neck, and twists.]

[The illusion pulls back into the body of the Dream Shifter, but Vastra's eyes are still firmly closed, her breath coming in very short inhales and exhales, only through her nose. She's silent for a few seconds, trying to control her voice before she speaks.]

Is it gone? [She's afraid. If she opens her eyes, is Jenny going to be under her sword...?]

I'd tell you, but I know how much you like surprises.

[He's impressed by the rapid action, really. The lack of hesitation on Vastra's part as well, even though the enemy looks like someone she cares for deeply.]

Oh, the Shifter is still there, Lady Vastra. But it no longer wears the face of your Jenny.

[It might seem admirable, but Vastra knows herself. If she took time to think and consider, she would have to set up another opportunity to be close and garner the confidence of the shifter. She felt like a dam that had taken the initial shock of a flood, and now everything was slowly building up, slowly cracking.]

Splendid. [Her eyes open again, but she still avoids looking at the body. Instead, she's looking over Loki with an intensely scrutinizing look.] And you? We were separated, clearly, are you injured?

[He waves a hand.] Not a scratch. I dispatched the rest of the droids whilst you were otherwise occupied as well.

[He's not going to ask if she's all right. It's not really any of his business.]

Good. [She nods, almost turns away (because actually, she really isn't okay), then remembers Loki wouldn't be able to hear her.]

I need a moment. Please. [She pulls her sword out of the neck of the shifter. Her body goes on autopilot, and she pulls a handkerchief out of her belt and cleans her sword before sheathing it. Everything is taken care of, they're both uninjured, she can't hear anything stomping around in the underbrush, she's allowing herself to stop for a moment.]

Take whatever time you need.

I shall make a ward for this area if you'd like to sit, even.

That would help, yes. [Talking is becoming too difficult, so she turns her back to Loki to more or less end her part in the conversation. Vastra sits down, seiza, in the middle of the clearing, the body right behind her. And she breathes. And mutters, like a mantra: 'Anger is always the shortest distance to a mistake, anger is always the shortest distance to a mistake...']

[Too many emotions are fighting for her attention. Bitterness over being separated from Jenny, relief that she hadn't misjudged the situation, and fury over being put in such a position are the ones she can identify now. There must be more, she feels lost at sea. Loki and she may be uninjured now, but Vastra is his ears. If Vastra is blind and Loki is deaf, surely it will spell something awful.]

[Loki knows when a conversation is over. And he knows that as much as he loves needling people, now is really not the time.

Silently, he walks a broad circle around them to set a ward, then finds himself somewhere to sit inside, behind Vastra. There he waits, patiently.]

[While Loki walks a circle, Vastra is sliding into meditation. It isn't terribly deep, she can still hear Loki settling behind her and hear the sounds of fighting in the distance. Reacquainting herself with the current situation and environment is what she needs--disconnect from what just transpired.]

[After a moment, Vastra turns in place, legs still bent. She's still processing, still attempting to calm down.] I knew the second she struck me. She knows I could move, or stop her. But she also knows I wouldn't.

I found it an odd thing myself, but of course I know little of your relationship.

A foolish move on the part of the deceiver. Overeager.

No... and yes, I suppose. [Vastra has to take another moment to collect herself.] This Shifter, must have had some sort of psychic leeching talent. Only I suspect it showed me what I believe would happen instead of what I know would happen. We all hope that our partners have high expectations where our love and loyalty are concerned.

[Perhaps Vastra has lived too much in fighting and violence as of late. In general, the Silurians were a calm and peaceful race. Where she got the idea that Jenny should strike her for betraying their marriage, Vastra isn't sure. And now isn't the time to explore that subconscious pebble in her shoe.]

It was overeager to suggest I kill you to prove something.

Interesting thought, that. Though I suppose it makes sense to provide you with an illusion that seems better than reality. Makes it harder to want to break.

[He chuckles.]

I wager it was a bit upset I intruded so quickly.

[Vastra levels an intense, soulful look at Loki. How can she express that after she woke up, when she was killing everything that moved, that was reality? And her life after, meeting the Doctor, meeting Jenny... that always felt like the dream she was having all the time. Being here, in the middle of the battle and in Luceti, was her waiting to go back to sleep.]

[But it's too much to say. Too much that, Vastra wagers, Loki doesn't care to hear about.]

No doubt. I suppose it wasn't too confident either, given how quickly it panicked.

[He crooks one eyebrow up.]

I can always strike my own ego and pretend I've a reputation now.

With a married, lesbian, lizard woman from the dawn of time? [Vastra snorts softly, a ghost of her usual wry smirk coming back.] I'm not certain that's the sort of reputation you want, Mr. Loki. One might accuse you of pretending just a bit too much.

[Loki laughed.] That might get me in a bit too much trouble, though it might be a boon to my creative reputation. No, I meant amongst the Shifters, since I've certainly knifed enough of them now.

Though then the problem is, none are alive to pass on the sheer terror of being in my presence. Perhaps I didn't think this through enough.

[Oh. Well. That's embarrassing. Why don't you just write a diary and give it over, Vastra.]

Perhaps not, but the opportunity is not lost. [She stands up, brushing the clinging foliage off of her knees.] How much sheer terror do you suppose we could instill before the sun goes down?

[Loki is so bad for her zen. He's probably going to encourage this, and she knows that. Something is coming back from a lost place inside of her, and because she's hurting Vastra doesn't much care to push it back down.]

[Loki smiles like the wicked edge of one of his daggers.]

More than you could possibly imagine, dear Vastra.

Thrill me. [Vastra draws her sword and holds it casually at her side.] Don't let me regret this too much later on. Better out than in.

[Loki smiles.]

Regret is for people who don't have more interesting things to do with their time.

[And he leads on to find them something very interesting to do.]
