Possession Event

Who: People in Luceti
What: Spiritual possession
When: The 26th to the 1st
Where: Luceti!
Summary: Check out the previous mod post.
Rating: If it gets smutty, move it somewhere private.

Starting at midnight on the 26th, Luceti and its inhabitants will find itself the focus of the Filial spirits, usually quiet and reclusive, now stepping out to deal with one of their own.

As promised, here is some additional information to help figure out how to play around with the spirits and interacting with similarly possessed people.

First off, each spirit has a certain time or place when they are at their most powerful. Consequently, characters possessed by them will enjoy these boosts and this in itself can be a deciding factor in what would otherwise be a stalemate. Here’s a quick run down:

  • Sona - She’s most powerful around lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Mostly this is concentrated at the southern lake.
  • Kipinn - He’s most powerful in high places, like mountain tops and the roofs of community buildings.
  • Faeren - She’s most powerful in the farmlands alongside things that grow.
  • Tsinku - He’s most powerful in the village itself, where technology thrives.
  • Eferin - He’s most powerful in the center of the forest where his heat may cause trees to burn. In fact, the upcoming forest fire may cause some trouble if his followers get too rowdy.
  • Hyt - It’s most powerful during the daytime under a bright sky.
  • Twila - It’s most powerful during the night time.
  • Nala- She has no domain and is generally welcome wherever she goes.

How possessed characters will deal with other possessed characters will depend on the interactions of the spirits themselves. A useful spreadsheet sums up these relationships. Those that have a friendly attitude to one another will generally allow ‘trespassers’ into their domain, but those they are not so friendly with may cause conflict.

Finally, to elaborate on Twila-possessed characters. Those with a natural affinity for darkness are likely to be possessed first. Once they have, they can try to recruit others less-compatible candidates to ‘join the cause’. Their goal is numbers. The more who are working with Twila, the better. Once they do, they’ll be inclined to act in their own self interest and if necessary, deal with others who try to get in their way. In the long term, the spirit Twila wants to stay this way, bonded to the Lucetians as hybrids, that way it cannot be imprisoned again. Think of it as pure survival instinct of an animal that’s spent way too long in a cage.

All isn’t lost. The other spirits may not be able to cage it again, but they won’t accept Twila reacting in this manner. Though it’s hard to tell what their beef with Twila is, they have an instinctive familiarity with the dark spirit and seem to act as its jail keepers.

They have the power to free people from Twila, but given their poor communication skills, figuring that out might just be a challenge. After all, the spirits can only communicate in shades of feeling and intentions, but not actually verbalize directions or marching orders. However, there will be a Malnosso post mid-event that will give everyone, possessed or otherwise, the info they need to turn things around.

[Law bristles internally, though his facade is cool. Ugh. Twila possessed at night. Not a great thing, even in the village.]

    So am I.

[... though his tone, flat as it is, leaves the question if he's genuinely unhappy or sniping back.]

You're looking terribly stuffy. That can't be comfortable at all.

[He lands nearby, looking rather relaxed and insolent.]

    [Spoiling for a fight, mm?

Law's tempted to give him one, physical or passive aggressive verbal slugfest. The God is terribly reminding him of Doflamingo at the moment, and that association along with pulses of sheer loathing from Hyt, makes him ache.

But that's playing their game on their terms. He's learned better. He'll play it on his.

Which means sticking his hands in his pockets, and walking away with a shrug towards the plaza.

Don't you hate it when they refuse to feed the trolls?]

[Loki is no ordinary troll. And what he wants is far more complicated than a fight.

    Silly Law. Silly Hyt.

Loki doesn't seem at all concerned. He falls into step next to Law, keeping pace easily.]

I have never seen you as a static creature. This is a rather strange thing to see. And distressing, really.

[Exactly why he reminds him of Doflamingo. Law arches an eyebrow as he continues on towards the lit fountain.]

Mmmm? You say I'm bound, do you?

[He doesn't disagree with that. The presence within him, influencing him doesn't disagree either, even though it wants to on principle.

It isn't dressed up as what it isn't. He's possessed. Simple. The spirit in him took him for its own interests.]

Don't see you being any more liberated.

I suppose you are bound. But that is a different matter from static, you see?

    [Loki laughs.]

Maybe so, maybe no. This interstitial conflict will not last forever, and I confess I would not feel troubled to be alone in my mind once more.

And yet, I have never before felt so... myself.

[He smiles a little as he stops under a lamp, face thrown into a relief of light and shadow. No telling what he's smiling at.

Disturbed roosting above them, a crow rustles. Otherwise the plaza is empty for the moment, save for droplets of water misting from the fountain. It diffuses and spreads the light from the fountain, lamps, and buildings as an eerie glow.]

Is it? Depends on the context, I suppose.

[He likes the faint colors that refract when the light hits the droplets right. Ever shifting. Pretty. Water and light can work well together. But it's not why he's smiling.]

    I see that.

[Loki is unconcerned about the light. For all that Twila is a being of shadow, Loki is also a mage, and a powerful one at that. And his first and greatest art has always been illusions, in bending light to his will.

He idly swirls a hand through the mist, sending the light curling into the form of a galloping horse. Despite the diffuse light, his shadow remains stubbornly black.]

A binding is something one struggles against. There is no struggle in stasis, yes? It is unchanging as death.

So put in that context, which do you feel is more accurate for your case? I do misread things from time to time. [He grins briefly.]

[Loki tilts his head, considering the word, the reactions. Interesting. He's still feeling his way through this; he doesn't know Law quite well enough, and the man's reactions have always been very guarded.

Which is what makes him interesting.]

[He's getting a bit chilly now (and damp, there's water speckled and sparkling in his hair, for once not underneath a hat) from the thickening mists, but that's okay. He's polar born and bred.

It doesn't wipe the thoughtful curve off his lips, or mute the intensity of his gaze. Someone's in a philosophical mood. Care to guess who?]

You know, I was thinking of how little we understand of everything here. Not just from the perspective of information, but viewpoint. We all go through life viewing things and making assumptions from our own unique little spheres of awareness, after all. Personal knowledge and experience defines everything.

But such things are equivocal. Especially here; what is reality for one could turn out to be delusion to someone else. And thus the true perception of truth is more difficult. Perhaps impossible.

So if it was all laid out before us, and we were free to see it all... would and could we truly perceive it as it is, you and I? Or would we see things not as they are... but as we are.

    [Your opinion will be enlightening.]

    [Loki laughs.]

What is reality, Law, to someone whose will and word can shift the very fabric of it? What is truth when an entire life can be an unending lie?

    [He shakes his head.]

For some, that is a more meaningful question, I think. For those who lack that sort of power. [A crooked smile.] And this has nothing to do with spirits; they are part of nature, the constituents of reality, I suppose one could say. But I have ever been apart from that.

[He tilts his head, rubbing his hands together, slowly.] There is someone I have never lied to once. I wanted to see if it was possible.

    [It can be everything.]

    Oh?

[Law tilts his head. Watching. Carefully considering behind the blankness.

Are you apart from that now with those wings and that barcode anchoring you down?

... but the cautionary point remains. We see things not as they are, but as we are. That was for himself as well as Loki. A reminder. To be very careful in what he takes from this.

Especially since this man reminds him of Doflamingo.]

[He shrugs, looking off into the distance, for a moment.]

It affirms for me that there is a reality outside of my own mind, I suppose.
