Starting at midnight on the 26th, Luceti and its inhabitants will find itself the focus of the Filial spirits, usually quiet and reclusive, now stepping out to deal with one of their own.

As promised, here is some additional information to help figure out how to play around with the spirits and interacting with similarly possessed people.

First off, each spirit has a certain time or place when they are at their most powerful. Consequently, characters possessed by them will enjoy these boosts and this in itself can be a deciding factor in what would otherwise be a stalemate. Here’s a quick run down:

Sona - She’s most powerful around lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Mostly this is concentrated at the southern lake.

Kipinn - He’s most powerful in high places, like mountain tops and the roofs of community buildings.

Faeren - She’s most powerful in the farmlands alongside things that grow.

Tsinku - He’s most powerful in the village itself, where technology thrives.

Eferin - He’s most powerful in the center of the forest where his heat may cause trees to burn. In fact, the upcoming forest fire may cause some trouble if his followers get too rowdy.

Hyt - It’s most powerful during the daytime under a bright sky.

Twila - It’s most powerful during the night time.

Nala- She has no domain and is generally welcome wherever she goes.

How possessed characters will deal with other possessed characters will depend on the interactions of the spirits themselves. A useful spreadsheet sums up these relationships. Those that have a friendly attitude to one another will generally allow ‘trespassers’ into their domain, but those they are not so friendly with may cause conflict.

Finally, to elaborate on Twila-possessed characters. Those with a natural affinity for darkness are likely to be possessed first. Once they have, they can try to recruit others less-compatible candidates to ‘join the cause’. Their goal is numbers. The more who are working with Twila, the better. Once they do, they’ll be inclined to act in their own self interest and if necessary, deal with others who try to get in their way. In the long term, the spirit Twila wants to stay this way, bonded to the Lucetians as hybrids, that way it cannot be imprisoned again. Think of it as pure survival instinct of an animal that’s spent way too long in a cage.

All isn’t lost. The other spirits may not be able to cage it again, but they won’t accept Twila reacting in this manner. Though it’s hard to tell what their beef with Twila is, they have an instinctive familiarity with the dark spirit and seem to act as its jail keepers.

They have the power to free people from Twila, but given their poor communication skills, figuring that out might just be a challenge. After all, the spirits can only communicate in shades of feeling and intentions, but not actually verbalize directions or marching orders. However, there will be a Malnosso post mid-event that will give everyone, possessed or otherwise, the info they need to turn things around.

[He knows some of this cold detachedness isn't him, but it's a familiar enough feeling that it doesn't much bother him. As long as he can hold onto the feelings he has toward those close to him, he should be alright.

He can't even guess what Law might be going through, as their elements are clearly not aligned.]

[There's a growing distance in his eyes and voice that does not match the warmth in which Law caresses the ninja's fingers.

And accidentally causes the light to shimmer around them.

.. and that triggers a memory among all the muted horror and the panic now being buried under waves of numbness.]

I remember what this is. It's happened before.

[The ninja tilts his head curiously. He doesn't recall this happening, and yet he feels as though he should. He and Law have been in Luceti for similar lengths of time.

What is this that's happened before?]

Miss Raine said that there was an event where the spirits took possession of the villagers and others across the planet, creating hybrids. It's mentioned in the Guide, but it happened before both of us arrived. Four years ago.

Ah.

[That would make this situation make a little more sense.]

That does seem to be what has happened here. Did she say much else about it?

Not much. At least on the cause. Maybe it was a shift.

[... he'll meet her tomorrow at the tea shop. If Itachi is with him, he can ask her directly.]

The Malnosso were adamant that the affected be killed, however.

[Itachi frowns. Obviously, this doesn't bode well for either of them.

There has to be another way.]

Perhaps it isn't exactly the same.

I hope not. Mister John helped cure the affliction last time, maybe he'll be gracious enough to step in this time if it gets to that point.

[But it's John. No counting on that. He'd only act if it is in his self interest.]

We should speak with her later. She's easier to get a hold of than Mister Albert.

[Never mind Law and Albert see each other go by often enough. They just don't talk much; only watch each other.]

[Itachi nods. If they need to speak with someone about this, then they will.

He doesn't like the idea of either of them, but Law especially, being killed for something beyond their control.]

[He's not going to give hollow reassurances that everything will be alright in the end. Not that he enjoys the thought of dying, but part of him is resigned to it happening sooner or later. He's had enough near misses in the past, and it's a dangerous game they're all playing. Especially for those who try to influence the state of the board.

There are prices that must be paid eventually.

But Itachi dying? He'll do everything in his power to prevent that. He doesn't need to go through it again.

So he curls up against his partner, wraps his arms around him (mindful of both their growing wings), and buries his face in Itachi's shoulder. Showing support silently.

Finally, though...]

I don't think I'm sleeping for the rest of the night.

[Sleep has suddenly become a terrifying thing. Terrifying when getting an ounce of true rest before Luke's intervention had been a blessing.

... if he stops fighting...]

You will have to at some point.

[Itachi understands. He does. One hand finds its way to Law's hair.]

A lack of sleep will make you just as vulnerable. [If not more so.]

But if you just want to sit here for now, we can.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't. [A twisted smile wrenches and fades against the ninja's skin. He just can't win.]

Please. Talk to me for a while. [At least until he falls asleep and a timeskip to morning can be had] Tell me... tell me anything... anything at all.

[Just give him a thread he can hold onto so he doesn't completely submerge under this.]

[This isn't the sort of thing Itachi is best at, but for Law's sake he'll give it a shot.]

I... had been contemplating looking into bending of some sort.

This is probably both the best and worst time to be doing so.

Bending? [Color him a faint shade of curious.] Like what Katara and her friends do?

... maybe better than worse. It's good to have something to focus on.

Yes, like that. I want to see if our techniques are at all compatible, as both make use of the elements, with certain individuals being stronger with certain ones.

It's not nearly the same, but it's close enough to be worth a shot.

I think there's a common basis. I once saw Katara reset an entire chakra system by manipulating chi with her bending. It was something.

Who you going to ask about it?

[Katara's getting better around you, but...]

I... had considered the younger tattooed one. [Slightly younger, anyway.]

Aang. He seemed like he'd be the cooperative sort.

He's very friendly. He'd probably be very willing to share what he knows. He and Miss Ikki.

[Itachi nods.]

So you agree that it might be a good course of action?

I do.

Then... I will look into it.

But I do think I will wait and see what happens with... this.

[His wings twitch.]

[Curious, Law runs a hand over one of Itachi's wings. Still growing. Give it a couple of hours and they'll be the same size as a cultist's.]

Think we'll be able to fly with these?

[The wing twitches again under Law's touch, but not enough to shake the hand away.]

I don't doubt that is their very intent. At least one of them.

[He just lightly pets it, losing focus and murmuring distractedly. He's trying desperately for winsome - fails with a near monotone.]

Come flying with me later, then?

[Now that hollow stare, devoid of any personality and spark and Law. This will become frightfully common in the days to come, but right now it certainly new and jarring.]

[That look gets a slight frown out of Itachi, but at least he (or at least the spirit currently with him) knows what's causing it.]
