Possession Event

Who: People in Luceti
What: Spiritual possession
When: The 26th to the 1st
Where: Luceti!
Summary: Check out the previous mod post.
Rating: If it gets smutty, move it somewhere private.

Starting at midnight on the 26th, Luceti and its inhabitants will find itself the focus of the Filial spirits, usually quiet and reclusive, now stepping out to deal with one of their own.

As promised, here is some additional information to help figure out how to play around with the spirits and interacting with similarly possessed people.

First off, each spirit has a certain time or place when they are at their most powerful. Consequently, characters possessed by them will enjoy these boosts and this in itself can be a deciding factor in what would otherwise be a stalemate. Here’s a quick run down:

  • Sona - She’s most powerful around lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Mostly this is concentrated at the southern lake.
  • Kipinn - He’s most powerful in high places, like mountain tops and the roofs of community buildings.
  • Faeren - She’s most powerful in the farmlands alongside things that grow.
  • Tsinku - He’s most powerful in the village itself, where technology thrives.
  • Eferin - He’s most powerful in the center of the forest where his heat may cause trees to burn. In fact, the upcoming forest fire may cause some trouble if his followers get too rowdy.
  • Hyt - It’s most powerful during the daytime under a bright sky.
  • Twila - It’s most powerful during the night time.
  • Nala- She has no domain and is generally welcome wherever she goes.

How possessed characters will deal with other possessed characters will depend on the interactions of the spirits themselves. A useful spreadsheet sums up these relationships. Those that have a friendly attitude to one another will generally allow ‘trespassers’ into their domain, but those they are not so friendly with may cause conflict.

Finally, to elaborate on Twila-possessed characters. Those with a natural affinity for darkness are likely to be possessed first. Once they have, they can try to recruit others less-compatible candidates to ‘join the cause’. Their goal is numbers. The more who are working with Twila, the better. Once they do, they’ll be inclined to act in their own self interest and if necessary, deal with others who try to get in their way. In the long term, the spirit Twila wants to stay this way, bonded to the Lucetians as hybrids, that way it cannot be imprisoned again. Think of it as pure survival instinct of an animal that’s spent way too long in a cage.

All isn’t lost. The other spirits may not be able to cage it again, but they won’t accept Twila reacting in this manner. Though it’s hard to tell what their beef with Twila is, they have an instinctive familiarity with the dark spirit and seem to act as its jail keepers.

They have the power to free people from Twila, but given their poor communication skills, figuring that out might just be a challenge. After all, the spirits can only communicate in shades of feeling and intentions, but not actually verbalize directions or marching orders. However, there will be a Malnosso post mid-event that will give everyone, possessed or otherwise, the info they need to turn things around.

...well, that explains a lot of what I did wrong.

[And a little of what she did right. When she made an earnest effort to calm down, she stopped having problems. She'd even taken a calming breath, at that.

She tries to get into a relaxed stance before taking a deep breath. It's been a rough morning.

There's one important rule aside from being patient that you have to remember when dealing with fire, and that is that you aren't controlling the element. You're just guiding it along.

You can't force it. Fire isn't a solid thing you can shove in the direction you want it to go. You let it use you as an anchor. If you push too hard it'll just blow up in your face.

[Bulla listens. It's similar enough to ki that it at least makes sense to her. Ki isn't as volatile but it does take some control.]

It sounds a little like controlling ki. Not exactly, but close enough. So...if I want to keep myself from having awkward accidents with fire, I need to try to be as calm and patient as possible?

    In theory.

What you also have to remember is that fire is as much life as it is destruction. Out of all the elements, even water, fire is the one that's the most alive. That's why it's so easy to lose control of.

A firebender is strongest when they're in the sun. Like fire, the sun can give life as much as it can take it away. Too many benders only think of the destructive side of the flame, fueling their attacks with negative emotions. I would do your best not to rely on that. Create a balance between it and yourself.

[Bulla thinks about that. She can actually understand how more than just negative emotion is needed all too well. She's seen the Super Saiyan transformation, fueled by negative emotion. It's having people to protect and reasons to fight that add balance and allow a person to get even stronger than that.]

I should try and think of all of the people and things in my life that I love, instead of just getting angry, then?

[Maybe this won't be so bad if that's what she has to do. She wasn't motivated to train on her own, but rather to protect children and to give her father a memorable Father's Day.]

Uh. Well I don't know if I'd put it like that. Maybe.

A motivation helps, but it mostly just comes down to understanding. If you understand the true basics of the element, then you won't lose your ability to focus it even if you lose your motivation. You get what I mean?

Kind of. You need to understand the positive and negative parts of the element to know how to work with the whole.

[She's not sure how long this will last, but as long as she can avoid burning things by accident, she'll consider that a very good start. The longer the effect lasts, the more she'll strive to actually learn how to direct fire.]

    Exactly.

I spent several years of my life with this one single goal. When that goal went away, so did my firebending. I had to learn a whole new take on it.

[Which he supposes he can share as long as he doesn't say where he got it from, right?]

    [Bulla blinks.]

Wow, you must have been pretty focused if your firebending disappeared for a while because of that.

[She doesn't pry, though. She does wonder if it was one that focused on the destructive side of firebending that he talked about, but she'll leave it to him if he wants to share or not. Some things are too private to share with anyone but one's closest friends.]

At least you found a way to get it back.

Yeah... Funny how things happen sometimes.

[He doesn't want to talk about it either.]

The important thing is I learned from it. So now I can pass that on.

[And now this is Bulla changing the subject so that they don't have to keep circling around it.]

So we've covered the basics of understanding fire. Can you show me how to do a super basic firebending move? I think it'll be easier to avoid accidents if I can get a sense of what brings the fire out in the first place.

[They're pretty lucky the homes are self-repairing, all things considered.]

    [personal profile] twodragons 2013-06-09 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods, then stands back and takes a deep breath.]

Firstly, the basis of your ability to use fire, as a bender anyway, is found in the breath.

[He performs a simple move, a small blast of fire shooting out from one outstretched fist.]

Direct it, and respect it as if it's a living thing, or else it'll chew you up and spit you out.

[Bulla takes a deep breath and tries to mimic the motion, but it's the 'chew you up and spit you out' that makes her choke at the end. She does manage to produce flames - a pitiful little pair of sparks that fizzle out after a second.]

...what did I do wrong? I was treating it with respect...

[Perhaps a little too much. She was nervous that she'd hurt herself.]

    Respect, not fear.

You can't be afraid of it, or you won't be able to work with it. Respect doesn't mean walking on your tiptoes. At the end of the day, you're still the one directing the element.

Try it again, but do it with more confidence!

Confidence. Okay. I can do confident.

[Sometimes. She doesn't think of herself as a fighter, really, and she's never been good at using ki offensively. Bulla takes a minute to think of the things that she does feel confident about. Fashion and social situations top that list. For more physical things, she reminds herself that she's been training lately, and that she got through the first stage of Logan's crazy obstacle course on her first try without powers.

Her second attempt is much better than the first. It's still not a very big flame, but this time she produces a little ball of fire just a little smaller than a tennis ball. It even flies for a couple of feet before fizzling out this time.
    ]

    How was that?

    Better.

[Much better, but he can't praise her too much yet.]

You can actually create flames, which is more than some people can do at first. Now do it again.
