The Cultural Fair!

Who: Everyone's invited!
What: The Cultural Fair
When: June 5th- 12th - admittedly dates are sort of nebulous - set up could have begun as early as the 5th, but given the event recently, more days could have been taken to do it and for people to involve themselves, so it probably "officially" starts a little later (by the 8th at the very least, though work can go on throughout it) - feel free to use your judgement/have fun!
Where: All around the town square!
Summary: Here.
Rating: ... who knows?!

Notes: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier.

Work probably started for it on the 5th-7/8th for labor purposes, though feel free to use dates to your advantage here! (Even if characters slapdash something at the last minute, it would be fun to see! It would even be encouraged after the crazy from the last event - kind of a way to get back in touch with themselves.)

CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth. (Helios and Ikki made posts in regard to it and there have been art club posters around, so anyone could have noticed those as well!)

I'll leave descriptions up to you all as there isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about their presentations and how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. Just keep in mind that this takes place in the plaza, there shouldn't be an issue with blocking traffic (there may be ropes up to try and keep pathways clear, however!), though it may branch around various points of the square depending on where someone wants a booth located / the number of actual participants. The square will also have a lot of brightly colored signs and decorations indicating what is going on!

For ideas/reference on how it was handled last time, feel free to look through here! There's no official signup, so go forth!

Got it in one.

[The explanation makes him look thoughtful]

Seems odd that if it's so widely known that it isn't used more often. Or is it that you don't want the non-magical to see?

[Yep, picking and trying to learn.]
folklorist: (Downcast)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-11 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah that's the main reason to be honest. Back home it's almost a criminal offense to use magic in-in front of non-magical people. I-I wish it were different but the Magic Council is-is strict when it comes to their rules...

[ And Helios looks a touched unsettled to even mention them. They ruined his life for the most part and he rather not have much to do with them at all if he could help it. ]

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-11 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Afraid of the outcome if the non-magical knew?

[It seemed a reasonable deduction to make]
folklorist: (I don't honestly know)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-11 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The witch trials h-happened in your world, correct? I. I suppose the Council fears that such a thing would happen again, should the non-magical society see and learn about us. I-I can't fault them for thinking that, but there has to be another way to show them.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-11 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we had the witch trials, although in my world's case, it was probably mostly just unfortunate ladies that had pissed someone off that got killed.

It makes sense though. We're not exactly the most rational species when it comes to being able to tell the difference between just different and a threat.
folklorist: (I don't honestly know)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-11 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That was case for my own world as well, but naturally...sometimes they actually wiped out whole family lineages with the trials. It-it made people in the magic community quite paranoid and-and with good reason. But things are different now and I'm sure that people wouldn't react that way again.

[ He frowns and hearing Derek's words. There was truth behind him and that's the reason for his own trepidation and uncertainty. ]

At least I hope one day it won't be like that.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-12 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Probably have to start small, with individual folks and work out from there. Things like this take time.
folklorist: (I suppose that works)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-12 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I suppose you're right. I just-I just hope that one day it can become a reality. I know that non-magical people might not approve of us when it does happen, but I have small measure of hope that people won't be too far put off by the idea of magic. There are lots of subcultures and things in the non-magical world that praise and glorify magic after all.

[ And here Helios will smile ever so slightly at the thought. ]

Perhaps one of these days when I eventually return back home things might change and people will get along. There are so many different uses for magic, and I think that together with science and technology there could be loads of improvement.

[ But that was a very large hope in a very large dream that might take some time to get off the ground. The fact that the Council was against his efforts would it make it any easier. ]

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so.

[Derek's experiences with his own world though wouldn't make him as optimistic. There was often too many people in positions of power who would rather keep the status quo, no matter how deadly to the people under them.]

It's a worthy aim, anyway.
folklorist: (I'm just your average headmaster yep)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-14 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
It is. In the end it could lead to so many possibilities. I just want the best for everyone I know and care about. A shared sentiment across many a person, I know, but I hope that one day that idea can bring us together.

[ He shrugs and huffs a little as Luminair nudges him to be picked up. ] Perhaps I'm just a bit too optimistic about it all.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-14 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Might be what you need to get it done. Again, nothing wrong with that.

[Derek glances back over at the eggs.]

You know, I always wondered; do the patterns on these mean anything?
folklorist: (Curiousity killed the cat you know?)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-14 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Helios merely nods at those words. He knows they're true and it'll definitely take time to consider and even accomplish back home. He might not even be alive when or if it does come to pass. His thoughts are snapped back to the current situation as Derek asks that question. ]

Hm? Oh, ah, no I don't believe so. I-I mean I'm sure there's so christian symbolism on them, since the eggs are made in monasteries in Bukovina.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-17 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Huh. Never noticed. Guess I'll have to check them out more closely sometime."

Anything linked to Christianity, and the church, tended to catch his attention. At least for purposes of study.
folklorist: (A rather interesting thought)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well you know. Decorating Easter eggs being a christian tradition has helped spread the designs around more. But I'm sure you can find those that have strictly religious undertones in their designs. These are more, ah, eclectic and random really.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-19 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Derek nods. Something to chase after later, really.]

So you're originally from the area around Romania?
folklorist: (A rather interesting thought)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-20 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, that's correct. Hunedoara county to be exact. It's in, ah, Translyvania actually. [ But Helios is not a vampire so no need to worry Derek. ]

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-20 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
So you're from the traditional home of vampires, and I work for a company named after the most well known fictional vampire hunter. Guess it's fitting we met, then.
folklorist: (Er. Um. Don't kill me please)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh dear. Helios might tense just slightly at those words. He nods a little, a sheepish smile touching his lips. ]

Ah s-so you're a vampire hunter as well? Just like Buffy then, hm.

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-21 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Not quite. Think she's got me on the super-power side of things.

[He notes the sudden stammer]

...I'm only interested in going after the ones from my own world. They're the result of an exorcism gone wrong, spread easy, and are pretty much as monstrous as you can get. Think serial killers with no stops whatsoever and a side order of feral to flavor their...'games'. Not something you want for a next door neighbor.
