The Cultural Fair!

Who: Everyone's invited!
What: The Cultural Fair
When: June 5th- 12th - admittedly dates are sort of nebulous - set up could have begun as early as the 5th, but given the event recently, more days could have been taken to do it and for people to involve themselves, so it probably "officially" starts a little later (by the 8th at the very least, though work can go on throughout it) - feel free to use your judgement/have fun!
Where: All around the town square!
Summary: Here.
Rating: ... who knows?!

Notes: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier.

Work probably started for it on the 5th-7/8th for labor purposes, though feel free to use dates to your advantage here! (Even if characters slapdash something at the last minute, it would be fun to see! It would even be encouraged after the crazy from the last event - kind of a way to get back in touch with themselves.)

CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth. (Helios and Ikki made posts in regard to it and there have been art club posters around, so anyone could have noticed those as well!)

I'll leave descriptions up to you all as there isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about their presentations and how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. Just keep in mind that this takes place in the plaza, there shouldn't be an issue with blocking traffic (there may be ropes up to try and keep pathways clear, however!), though it may branch around various points of the square depending on where someone wants a booth located / the number of actual participants. The square will also have a lot of brightly colored signs and decorations indicating what is going on!

For ideas/reference on how it was handled last time, feel free to look through here! There's no official signup, so go forth!

Superheroes and aliens... [ He sounds very amused at that. ] I've heard my students talk about superheroes before. Iron man and-and Superman. Things like that. You're a superhero yourself, then?
noitatnacni: (it's always like this)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-06-21 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got it. Never heard of Iron Man, but my dad worked with Superman in the Justice League. [Said ever so matter-of-factly. It's not really bragging so much as it is how Zatanna's life has gone for the past several years. Her dad's been fighting crime ever since she could remember, and then a couple of years ago, he got recruited.]

Yeah, something like that. There's a group of us back home who work with the League sometimes. Or go out on our own. [They are teenagers.] I'm the only magician, though.
folklorist: (Ever so curious)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-23 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Well I believe the man named Iron Man is actually here. His real name is-is Tony Stark... [ And he's not sure if the secret identity is a big issue so he looks sheepishly back at Zatanna. ]

Not-not that he keeps it a secret, he seems well aware to give it out. But what sort of magic can you do, if you don't mind my inquiring?
noitatnacni: (so that's cute)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-06-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
You sure you should be sharing that? [Not that Zatanna minds; she and her dad both go by their real name, and so does Artemis. But then there were the others, like Robin or Static, who wear their masks all the time.]

Well, some people are really picky about their secret identities--but if he doesn't care, then no harm done. [Iron Man; maybe she'd get in touch with him. Couldn't hurt to get to know the other superheroes in town, right?]

Basic things. Levitating, transformations, some glamours. Stuff you can accomplish with spoken spells. I'm working on enchantments, but that stuff can be a little hard to come by here.

What about you?
folklorist: (Oh is that right)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-06-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, he-he's mentioned quite a few times over the network. He doesn't seem to be...too secretive about it. [ Not that Helios has seen or read. ]

Oh! Well all sorts of magic, really. Enchantments, elemental spells, barriers and-and teleportation as well. Back home we learn more about offensive and defensive spells, but I do know some illusions from reading up on them here. It helps that there's quite a bit of free time to-to go through things.
noitatnacni: (you're so in for it.)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-06-29 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, not everyone is. My dad goes--went by his real name. [Until Fate took him over. Zatanna pauses for a moment before she catches herself.] Of course, not everyone really advertises it either.

[That last one gets her to raise an eyebrow.] Teleportation? Seriously, can every magician here do that but me? [Okay, so she's exaggerating. But Helios makes two, and there are some things that would be really cool to learn.] Illusions can be used in combat if you do it the right way. Copies of an attacker can really confuse your opponent.

And yeah, it does--although I probably haven't been spending as much of that free time studying as I should.
folklorist: (Probably going to run into something)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-02 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, teleportation seems to be hit or miss here, I've come to find out. Some people have the ability while others don't. But you could probably learn it from my world if you'd be interested? It's a fairly simple sigil to draw out and practice with.

[ He nods at that, having used the tactic once or twice in drafts. ] Illusions certainly help one gain an upper advantage. It's not all just for magic tricks! [ He laughs heartily at that. ]

Luceti can be a bit...distracting when it comes to free time. The shifts don't help matters all that much either.
noitatnacni: (what you're saying is...)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-07-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Really? [Yes, clearly she's interested. Zatanna sits up straighter as Helios mentions sigils, her eyes brightening.] Oh man, that'd be amazing! Not even my dad could teleport, and he's a really great magician.

[And hey, even if there are a few accidents along the way? Zatanna's pretty good at handling embarrassing situations.]

Nope, not at all. Plus knowing how to turn a henchman's gun into ropes comes in handy. Or being able to use water to freeze them in their tracks. [All skills she plans on keeping up with, since yeah, she's heard of the drafts. More recently she's gotten her first taste of what she thinks is a shift, and it has her mouth quirking into a frown.]

You mean like when we were all possessed? Believe me, I know what you mean when you say that's stuff distracting. Especially when people don't act like themselves. [And feelings get sparked which Zatanna still isn't sure about.]
folklorist: (I suppose that works)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-11 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that hard actually! Remembering the symbols is a bit difficult but I have faith in people who enjoy what they learn. Enthusiasm and hard work can go a long way. [ Helios' brow will lift slightly at Zatanna's description of magic in her world. It was more powerful than using the elements that's for certain. Changing an object into something else was a skill only mythologies had and sometimes incredibly strong magicians. ]

We can't do that in my world. Reality warping, I mean. Even as small as that sounds it's fairly difficult for humans to do. It's not to say that some can't do it. Houdini could and Aleister Crowley as well. But they were from powerful bloodlines and-and probably tapped into ley lines to help them achieve such feats. But freezing water is simple and it's quite handy for hot days too.

[ He laughs lightly as he looks around at the people mulling about. ] Yes. It...it was one of the stranger occurrences here. I wouldn't be surprised if people weren't themselves weeks after the fact.
noitatnacni: (i've got an idea)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-07-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Really? [Then again, it’s not really what Zatanna thinks of as reality warping—that’s Lord of Chaos or Order level where she’s from.] Well, part of it is illusion—it’s not actually a snake. It just looks and feels like one. But the material that makes the gun is altered too, so the shape feels right. Then it wraps around them and forms the restraint.

Not to mention you just called teleporting easy. Matter alteration requires powerful bloodlines, but folding the fabric of space and time is simple if you know the right symbols? [Just because she can’t do it doesn’t mean she doesn’t know what it is. There are always principles involved.]

Yeah, definitely. Then again, maybe that’s not a bad thing in every case. [She could name names.]
folklorist: (I'm just your average headmaster yep)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-13 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see now! It's almost like you're bending a person's sense so that they're experiencing something other than what's there. That's quite ingenious really. Mm and yes that's right. Matter alteration requires more raw force of the caster than teleportation. Teleportation can use a number of in between methods, like photos of place you wish to go to, or an address or even a business card, all those can help fuel the spell's potency and power.
noitatnacni: (it'll work out)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-07-13 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really need to get some lessons on that. So when do we start? [Because seriously, she wants to learn how to make the impossible easy. Not to mention that being able to teleport would be really useful on top of being very cool.]
folklorist: (Yes I do agree with that)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Helios will blink and then laugh at that question. ] Well I can't refuse a request like that! Whenever you're ready to, ah, learn I'll be available for private lessons if you're more comfortable with that. There are the magic lessons at the school too. But I generally only teach teleportation to individuals who express interest in it.
noitatnacni: (we did blow up the kitchen)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-07-14 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I really hadn't thought about going to school much. [Although wow, that may not be the best thing to say to an adult.] I mean, it's summer--they do let out school for summer here, right?

[Yeah, let's not dig this hole any deeper.] I'm definitely good with private lessons. There's not exactly a course on magic or anything where I'm from. It's always been me and my dad.
folklorist: (Ever so curious)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-17 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it's not for everyone I've found. But there are some wonderful teachers here and-and it's not as bad as you'd think. [ An adult who happens to be a teacher and a headmaster to boot. ]

Oh! Yes of course we do! We're just getting ready to let out school actually. The cultural fair is...something like a final project of sorts. [ Though he won't push Zatanna to joining in schooling here if she doesn't want to. That's her choice to make. He smiles and nods at the suggestion. ] But private lessons is certainly fine with me. Is there any specific time you'd like for them to occur, or day for that matter?
noitatnacni: (i don't mind)

[personal profile] noitatnacni 2013-07-18 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure. [Right. Don't talk bad about school in front of the adult.] But you know, I'm required by law to groan about it, since I'm a teenager. [Plus she's pretty sure no one on her floor goes to school either. Zatanna's not quite ready to be the educational advocate.]

Gotcha. It's a pretty good one. [Better than making volcanoes for a science fair by a long shot.] Not at 11 am, and please tell me you aren't going to make me show up six days a week. I've already got one guy doing that, and it's a huge pain.
folklorist: (Oh is that right)

[personal profile] folklorist 2013-07-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Helios laughs genuine and understanding. He knows how it is with practicing magic everyday. He and Nero used to do it way back when they were children. ]

Oh heaven's no. I suppose it's up to you and your schedule when and where you'd like to meet. It is your interest and-and time after all. I have quite the open schedule during the summer months so...whatever you'd like to do.
