The Cultural Fair!

Who: Everyone's invited!
What: The Cultural Fair
When: June 5th- 12th - admittedly dates are sort of nebulous - set up could have begun as early as the 5th, but given the event recently, more days could have been taken to do it and for people to involve themselves, so it probably "officially" starts a little later (by the 8th at the very least, though work can go on throughout it) - feel free to use your judgement/have fun!
Where: All around the town square!
Summary: Here.
Rating: ... who knows?!

Notes: Booths can be labeled as separate comments! Just put [booth name] or something in the subject line so people can find top level comments easier.

Work probably started for it on the 5th-7/8th for labor purposes, though feel free to use dates to your advantage here! (Even if characters slapdash something at the last minute, it would be fun to see! It would even be encouraged after the crazy from the last event - kind of a way to get back in touch with themselves.)

CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME TO TAG THE LOG FOR INTERACTING WITH OTHERS, NOT JUST BOOTHS, SO FEEL FREE TO TAG IN! Also a character who might not know what's going on is welcome to walk by and question it! And so forth. (Helios and Ikki made posts in regard to it and there have been art club posters around, so anyone could have noticed those as well!)

I'll leave descriptions up to you all as there isn't much that is too uniform about the displays, as everyone is encouraged to be creative about their presentations and how hard the characters worked isn't something I could define for each of you. Just keep in mind that this takes place in the plaza, there shouldn't be an issue with blocking traffic (there may be ropes up to try and keep pathways clear, however!), though it may branch around various points of the square depending on where someone wants a booth located / the number of actual participants. The square will also have a lot of brightly colored signs and decorations indicating what is going on!

For ideas/reference on how it was handled last time, feel free to look through here! There's no official signup, so go forth!

I try to keep up with the clever and the witty. A girl like myself can only do so much.

{ How she manages to keep her bitterness when she admits this little truth is beyond her. She always hated how she never felt smart enough compared to, say, Anna or Louis. They were paid for their smarts in the group.

But the conversation she is having with him is fascinating, making her sincere in her questions and happy enough in her remarks and questions. Puzzles always did quip her interest. If only because he was so good at them in the past.
} And like every good story, I suppose that makes you a chronicler of their message and meaning. A modern Grimm of Riddles?

Or are you one of those... How does one say it? Enigmatologists?

[He spreads his hands in appeal.]

Please, you speak too highly. I'm simply a puzzle aficionado; I enjoy puzzles as they come, but I can't claim them as a profession. [And he'll be the first to admit that he's better at solving puzzles than creating them.]

... That said, I do compile the puzzles I come across in a tome of sorts. Even I can't remember them all without a bit of help.

So you do collect them! I knew it. You did strike me as a type of person who would not wish to forget a particularly interesting puzzle.

{ The puzzles where he comes from must be plentiful if he records them all in a tome of all things. The closest thing she thinks that can be similar was Jack's habit of copying down lessons and teachings from different religions. Even then it was a pretty tiny book. Not a self-described 'tome' as the man said } How did you ever get into this curious hobby of yours? If I am not being rude in asking this question.

Because I don't think it would be simple as you suddenly deciding that solving crosswords was too dull.

I've yet to encounter a crossword too dull, but you're correct all the same.

[He moves to rub his chin, which inevitably turns into a stroke of his fake beard.] I discovered my fondness for puzzles after parting ways with a very dear friend of mine. He always did love them, and I felt I owed him an earnest attempt to understand his passion. Before long, I began to see puzzles in everything, everywhere -- and still do. It's a bit frightening in hindsight.

In everything around you? That is a curious concept. { It also sounds like a rather dramatic expression and she knew Jacques since she was sixteen or so. This sounds like one of those figures of speech where you exaggerate what you mean for emphasis. You call them similes, right?.

And yeeeeet. The way he says it. She likes to think she has a good read on people and he seems so certain of it. Least he isn't speaking in riddles unlike some people she knows.
}

Would you like to test this out to be certain of it? { She looks around and sees there is enough activity and bustle around them that surely-- } Do you happen to spot a 'puzzle' happening right now? In some shape or form? If you do not mind, that is. I admit I am asking because this a most puzzling claim that I am hearing.

Well, that's one challenge I can't back down from. One moment...

[He crosses his arms thoughtfully and shifts his attention beyond his conversation partner for inspiration. It isn't very often that he's asked outright for a puzzle, so it takes him a moment to find a suitable example. When he spots two young men adding to a small pile of boxes at the foot of an apartment building, Layton unfolds his arms to gesture at them with an open palm.]

You see those two fellows there?

Surely it will not be a difficult for you. { Looking over at the direction of where he was gesturing to, it doesn't take her too long to see what he sees. Spotting the two men, Addie nods to let him know that she has found them. }

I do. It seems like they are conversing with one another. Or don't mind each other's company.

So it would seem. It appears they're in the process of moving those boxes out of that block of flats.

Here is my puzzle: Let's say they carried those boxes from the second floor to the ground floor. The bigger of the two carried down two boxes in one minute. The smaller carried one box down in 30 seconds. For both men, the return trip up will take the same amount of time as the trip down.

With the second floor as the starting point, how long would it take them to move seven boxes down?

{ This doesn't seem to have a trick to it. Only simple math which she could do. Then again. That's what she thought whenever she spoke to James and he spoke about paradoxes.

Addie tries to compute the numbers in her head for a second, wishing she had paper to keep track of the figures more easily. This solution she had should be the right answer but she wasn't holding her breath. There were just some things she wasn't good at. (Much to her chagrin.)
}

I believe it'll take them around six minutes to get all the boxes down? If they both start at the same time. { She spreads out her hands, sighing in a dramatic manner. } Ah! But I am positive there is some sort of catch to this. Riddles are like good mysteries: There is always a twist to them that one does not know.

Ha ha. A straightforward mystery is hardly a mystery at all, is it? That said... [He clears room on the booth counter and slides forward a notepad and pencil.] You don't sound very confident in your answer. I would suggest drawing a diagram to corroborate your mental work.

[In other words, she'd better try again.]

Give me a moment, s'il te plait?

{ She pats herself down to get a pencil and a notebook she had taken to carry on her person. There it is. She takes it out and scribbles out the diagram like he suggested. Matthew will be better at this.

Of course he would be. It takes her longer to double check her math and she looks up, huffing out a strand of hair that had fallen in her face. She is more sure of this answer this time around.
}

Is it a case of it taking three minutes instead? { Why yes. She is still looking at this at an angle of it needing math to solve the problem. Even after drawing out the picture like he had done. There was no reason to suspect otherwise. It was pretty innocuous. }
