[The rec center today is colourfully decorated, with posters and directing signs here and there to make this whole process easier. The main floor is peppered with a bunch of tables and chairs pilfered from various locations (primarily the school) with two chairs facing each other per table. There's a couple of bigger tables off to the side, one for food (carrying drinks and various snacks, including Teddy and Ororo's homemade rainbow cookies), and the other with a few chairs and piles of paper everywhere. And a checklist. The checklist is important.

The desk is Billy's, and he's handing sheets of paper out to anyone who comes in and was signed up for the speed dating. Give your name, get a sheet and a name tag, go to the first desk or mingle until it starts- that's what people will be told when they arrive. Teddy's not far from the desk or the door depending on where he's needed, directing people to follow the signs, get comfortable, try some snacks- whatever they want.

Finally a lounge area has been set up with cushy chairs, couches, and the rec center's supply of games and whatnot in the corner. There is a sign for the area that says, "If you find yourself on a turn without a date, come hang out!" It's also got a picture of a weird-looking potato man hanging out, but never mind that.

When everything is ready and people are good to go, Teddy steps up and calls for attention, with Billy sitting on top of the table behind him for moral support (and unhelpful interruptions).]

Hey, guys – Hey! Can everyone hear me? Everyone? [...] Great!

I'm sure everyone knows why they're here. Or, you know, not, since a few of these sign-ups look a little suspicious... [He raises an eyebrow at that, but his smile remains good-natured, and his brow smooths over soon enough.] On behalf of Alliance, welcome to Luceti's very first -

-We think.

- speed dating event! [Though Teddy glances at Billy for that interruption, he'd paused as if he expected it to come.] I'm Teddy, and this is Billy, and we're your hosts today. I'll try to be brief for those of you who just want to get this started already, but let's go over the rules and regulations first.

If you happened to get dragged into this without knowing what you're getting yourself into, it's basically exactly as it sounds. You might remember one of us handing you a list of numbers. Well, when Billy gives the signal, everyone will head to the table with the first number on their list, which will pair you off with someone in the room you just might not have met before! You'll have five minutes to talk to them and get to know them, just enough time for a good – or bad – first impression. After that, one of us will blow the whistle, and you'll go to the next numbered table. And on and on, until it's all over! By then, you might have found someone you're interested in, either as a friend, a potential love interest, or even just someone you really don't want to see again.

To keep track of it all, there's a space beside the number to write down the name of the person you're talking to and anything else you might have learned about them. And maybe by the end, you can write down a no, a yes, or an oh yes.

Try not to be too vague about it and we'll give you your matches at some point in the future.

[Teddy grins after that, a happy and excited one.] Remember, this is all about having fun and meeting new people! If you want to take a break, get bored, or don't have a partner, refreshments are on that side of the room [He gestures to the side, showing off the assorted foods and the cookies that he and Ororo spent a good part of the night baking.], or you can come up and talk to us! We're just the supervisors here, after all.

[He takes a step back after that, his attention going to Billy, his way of telling him to give the signal.] Billy?

[Billy gives a small wave, remaining on his table. Teddy did the hard part, after all.] There's a lounge, too, if we're not interesting enough. You might meet somebody there you're not paired with and find a new friend, so give it a shot.

That's pretty much it, so everyone can go on and head to your first table, and we'll blow the whistle in one minute. Thanks for coming, and try to have fun!

For serious? Dude, that's- [As if on cue, the whistle for the next round sounds and everyone starts shuffling around.] Talk about timing! C'mon, we can sit right over there. This is gonna be great!

[And with that she's already bounding off towards an open table. She stops halfway to look over shoulder and wave Barnaby over before she reaches the table and crashes down in one of the seats.]

[She was either hyper or childish, he couldn't tell. Suddenly, he was almost dreading what the next several minutes would bring.

Barnaby followed her with a calmer, more collected grace, and sat down across from her.]

We'll see how it goes... where did you want to begin, Miss?

You've gotta start with names, yeah? You're Barnaby, I'm Pascal, and it's super lucky I ran into you so soon. Now we'll get even more time together since I found you right off the bat!

[Pascal leans back in her chair and points at Barnaby.]

How's about you tell me a little about yourself and stuff?

[Barnaby placed a hand on his chin, as if deep in thought, while went over the standard list and altered it from there.]

Well, I'm from a city that's much larger than this, I'm a fan of the arts, and cabbage rolls are my favorite food.

[Standard answers that he's given for magazine interviews.]

What about you, Miss Pascal?

[Pascal thinks for a moment before shrugging and deciding to go with the same sort of answers Barnaby gave.]

I'm from the Amarcian enclave, which is a pretty big place waaay on the top of a mountain. You need to use this thing to pchew over there though! I'm a huuuge fan of electronic doodads, mechanical thingies, that sorta stuff. Aaand my absolute favourite food of all time is, ran-tan-ta-daaa, bananas!

[Why yes, she did just sound out a fanfare.]

Electronic doodads and mechanical thingies sound like facinating subjects. Tell me, are those the standard terms you were using?

You know, stuff like automatic back massagers, cooking robots, power supply whatevers, air conditioners shaped like snowmen so they're extra cool. That kinda thing!

So what about you, are you big fan of the heat or are you more into the icy cold stuff?

...I prefer the summer, thank you. [Anything was better than the winter, especially around Christmas.] I'm just not a fan of getting too hot. Your air conditioners really do sound like the perfect solution.

[It was a deflection. It was nearing Christmas when he was taken from his world, and a part of him still boggled over the fact that summer had 'arrived so quickly.']

Ohmigosh, me too! [But wait, Christmas is awesome. What's with you man.] I mean, I sorta think I'm more of a winter girl, but when you start to overheat and it feels like your tongue has turned into a desert in your mouth then that really sucks. I'll totally remember you for when I get started on this airy idea of mine, wouldn't want you melting or somethin'.

[In fact, Pascal even makes a note on the comment section of her list about this. Barnaby. Summer guy. One snowman.]

[Christmas is horrible and you should feel horrible.

Barnaby watched the girl's effervescent excitement over making a mechanical snowman with an almost detached interest. She was...interesting.]

I'm sure you don't need to do that, Miss Pascal. The summer isn't too bad once you get used to it.

[Meanwhile, he's jotting down a note himself: Pascal. Hyperactive, 'creative' mechanic. Annoying. Might be useful.]

But we might get a real scorcher this year! And I don't wanna wake up and find all these puddles where people ended up melting away and stuff.

[And hey, the Malnosso could always pull something where people melt in the heat. It could happen! And then who will be the unmelted one with the snowman air conditioner? This girl, right here.]

[Ideas that Barnaby did not want to entertain. Although NEXT could come in any form, melted humans were still a very special kind of squick for anyone to imagine.

He paused for a moment, and had a feeling he would regret his choices in the coming months.]

I think I'll take you up on the air conditioner. Just in case.

Y'okay! I'll be sure to send one your way once I've got them all finished up. I've even got it down right here so I won't go forgetting about it!

[She holds up her list between two fingers so Barnaby can see. Sure enough there's the note she wrote down earlier about Barnaby being a summer guy and that he wants a snowman. Other than that there are no other notes on her list, even though she's met a few people already.]

[Barnaby peered at the note, silly as it was, and was surprised that he was the only one listed on the page. It was impossible not to notice her travels around the hall with her hair, and the both had seen multiple people. It was...

...interesting.]

I'm honored, Miss Pascal. There isn't a greater compliment than being penciled in on a young woman's calendar. [He stepped into PR mode with the ease of a musician taking up their instrument to a favored piece. Although it was only polite to return the gesture and show his slip of paper, he chose not to. His comment was too impersonal for her smile.

He sighed. There was no winning here.]

You can find my apartment on the top floor of Community House number 1 whenever they're ready. Heat rises, so I'm grateful for your help.

...I can do something for you in return, if you'd like.

[Quid Pro Quo. There was no currency, but bartering was still a thing. Nothing like that could be just given away...right?]

[Hopefully it won't be too warm when she decides to scale the steps of CH1. Then again, she heard one of the community buildings happened to have an elevator now, so maybe she'll be lucky in that case.

As for Barnaby's offer-]

Aww, you don't hafta do anything for me! [...] Buuut if you've got any tech from your world here with you then I won't say no to taking a look at it! You said you were from a big city, yeah? You must have all kinds of gadgets there.

[He kept his tone even even though his uncertainty flared. This woman and her snowmen...the possibilities of what she could do with a cellphone were almost horrifying.]

...I'll see what I can find for you, Miss Pascal. [Like a cellphone, one that wasn't his. His personal items-- his own cellphone and his hero wristband-- were expressly off limits. That included his hero suit, if it ever arrived.] Fair's fair, right?

[Eee! Talk about exciting. Pascal bounces around in her seat at hearing that.]

Yup, fair's fair and stuff! Oh hey, I should tell you were I live too so you can come show off whatever cool gizmos you dig up, right? I'm over in one of the houses, number 28!

[With luck, it would only be a child's toy. She couldn't do anything too strange with something that already was, right?]

[Oh yeah, yeah she could. Whatever kids toy she ends up getting might wind up with a rocket punch embedded in it somewhere. And maybe lasers if she has the parts. No, rocket lasers! They're a thing, really. Or they will be once Pascal makes them.]
