If you don't know yourself, you don't know what to hide from your opponents. Haven't you heard the old adage Know yourself and your enemy, and you need not fear a hundred battles from them?

I hadn't heard that, actually. Though it seems like quite the smart policy...when one has enemies. I try not to do that. [Liar! Liar!]

So do you play the game against your opponent, or against yourself?

Enemies tend to appear whether we want them to or not.

[He gives his beard a stroke]

I would argue both.

Which then is the more difficult opponent?

Not particularly no, but conflict is part of nature.

[He smiles at that]

The most difficult opponent is one which respects you, and acknowledges their own weaknesses. They can be better prepared for whichever strategies and tactics you favor, and counter them, knowing which likely route you would take against their weak points.

Mmm. So sometimes random strangers take exception to you and your beard, I suppose.

But does that require respect, or merely knowledge and keen observation? [He rarely respects his opponents. Because they're idiots.]

I suppose envy for its luxuriousness might contribute.

[He is grinning at that]

A person who respects their opponent, is less likely to fall prey to mistakes of vanity or carelessness. Believing that they can defeat you leads to better preparedness.

Or I suppose one could just plan contingencies properly so even in defeat, there is victory to be had.

I named it The Jasmine Dragon, it was a profitable place, and I enjoyed playing a nice game of pai sho with a customer or friend now and again.
