Is that so... [For some reason, it really shouldn't surprise him that it would be Gold that would be telling Ash something like that. Sigh. Still, Cilan smiles as he explains.] Well, for many people, there's something charming about having these plants there to remind you that you should show someone how much you appreciate them more often. And, for those who consider themselves connoisseurs of romance, it's often considered a necessary ingredient for the recipe of love!

[Seriously did you miss the part where he said it was also an excuse to kiss people...then again, this is Ash that he's talking to, so he can't help but wonder what exactly Gold said to him...]

[...Ash. It's a figure of speech. Unfortunately though, Cilan doesn't know when to quit since he does at least try to simplify it this time.]

For some people, it's considered romantic to kiss someone you have a deep admiration for under the mistletoe. [Hence, "recipe of love"]

Sometimes they might, though often if their feelings are strong enough and they are mutually reciprocated afterward, then the two of them could become more than just friends.

...Well, actually, they would likely be considered more than just best friends as well--if anything, they would likely be considered a couple...

Yes, that's right! It's a similar taste to the relationship that the Cottonees had! [Except, you know, with people instead of Pokemon.]

That's...um. [He really should have seen that coming.] Well, depending on who you ask, being a couple is different than being friends--even best best friends--with one another. There are some things that couples do with one another that you might not do with your best friends, for example.

Sibling--no, not like that. [Good lord what pit have we dug ourselves into.] While it is true that there are some things that you might do with your family and not with your friends, being a couple with someone can be a different relationship than one you might have with members of your family as well.

[It's not the same thing as best friends or siblings Ash, it's a whole separate thing??]

I...yes, I suppose that's one way to look at it. [Maybe Cilan is finally starting to realize that this is going nowhere??] It's a new type of relationship that differs in taste when compared to the friendships you have with some people or Pokemon, or the bonds you have with your family.

[Please tell us that we're getting somewhere closer to a plane of understanding with at least this much...]

So what 'bout when people are sayin' they have a couple of friends? Are all these friends of theirs couples?

[what] ...No. Usually when someone says they have "a couple of friends", it means that they have more than one person that they think of as a friend. It's a different expression than saying you and another person are considered a couple together.

Then why d' they use th' word 'couple'? Shouldn't they use a different word?

Well...there are other words that some people might use to describe that kind of relationship, but "couple" is one of the most commonly used ones for it. Otherwise, they might be considered "lovers", or refer to one another as their "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" to distinguish them from their other close friends.

Technically-speaking yes, but...uh, what I meant was... [To be honest, Cilan isn't sure what he should even be saying right now that will help make this any clearer, this isn't exactly his area of expertise.] It's like a term of endearment for some people that are in that kind of relationship?

But how? It doesn't sound like anything special t' me callin' your friend a boy friend or girl friend 'cause they're more than best friends.

Perhaps to you, but it does seem to have a special flavor for those people who feel that way about someone. Also, in some ways, it's easier for others to refer to someone as "that person's boyfriend" or "that person's girlfriend" when talking about two people that are a couple.
