I'm fairly certain Anise made the cake disappear after that. Of course I won't tell her, although...she's intelligent enough to figure it out on her own. [Wishing Natalia had asked for assistance does them no good now, though.]

How are you doing? Separate from an excellent birthday party, I mean.

I'm doing well. This is one of the nicest days I've had in awhile.

[A nice evening spent with friends. And also probably one of thew few days since the draft where he hasn't had to deal with that strangely ominous feeling that he was being watched -- not the sort of thing he talked about, but there was definitely a certain jumpiness he's had since then that seems to have disappeared.]

You do look it. [Seeing him smile without reservation makes her happy, too.] Can I get anything for you?

Hmm, actually I was just wondering if there was any of that cake left -- er, the normal one, that is.

I was mistaken. It seems that other cake was more popular than expected.

Oh. But I suppose that expression wouldn't be very appropriate for this situation, seeing as I'm actually doing neither...

I've never liked that expression anyway. Given the option of eating the cake, why would you want to keep it instead?

Perhaps it's meant for someone with a large appetite who would like to have the cake around for seconds?

That must be a very stellar cake, then; on an impatient day I'm far more inclined to make a new one.

[This is pleasant. Sitting and talking about almost nothing with Ion. Watching his mood and manner improve after the draft has been a hard road for those who care about him - Ion, of course, has the harder time, living it - and such easy smiles set her at ease now.]

[It was nice. It helped bring back a sense of normalcy that had been lost during the draft, even if this particular occasion wasn't exactly an everyday event.]

It certainly seems like that would be the simplest solution. Though for someone like myself, I don't think making a new one would be a viable option.

Not at all. I love your cooking, Nephry. And perhaps if it's you, I may actually be able to make something delicious for once.

[He's gotten better at making certain things over the years no more "Ion failed at making a sandwich" messages for him but he's still somewhat cursed when it comes to cooking. It's gotta be one of the few things he's genuine terrible at, aside from maybe drawing.]

I think Anise would prefer the honor of formally teaching you to cook, if you want to learn, but I'll be content with a little baking.

[Her familial friendship with Ion is so easy and relaxed - something she can't remember having with anyone, really, not even Peony.]

It isn't an age limit, it's a vanity limit. And it is a little sad, to think...of just how long I have lived here, all good things aside.

...I suppose that would serve as a rather unpleasant reminder, wouldn't it.

[And not the sort he can sympathize with as well anymore, given it's the very opposite of a sad reminder for himself -- every year spent here is another year he gets to live.]

But I think that's all the more reason why a cake on your birthday is a good idea. Having something sweet to eat can make for a nice distraction.
