[There's a pretty generous buffet set up in and around the living room. It's composed primarily of sweets, although there's definitely enough to make a balanced meal out of, too. Among the food are a few dishes that look less than ideal, but nothing on the buffet table will give you food poisoning. ...Probably.]

[ ... Maybe. With Natalia's cooking on the table it's hard to be sure. Some of her cooking is easy to spot as they're the less ideal or what happened here cooking on the table (just look at those burnt cookies and what's up with the lemonade?

However there is one thing she made that actually looks relatively normal and that's the cake that she made for the occasion.

Don't let it deceive you though. It's the worst out of everything she made. Maybe even combined.

[Luke prods discerningly at the cake with his pinky. Judging by his reaction, he is pretty skeptical.]

... I have a bad feeling about this.

Wow! It looks...normal.

[Color Anise surprised. She was pretty sure when she saw Natalia go down into the kitchen earlier that it'd end up in flames, but not only was the kitchen in pristine condition, the cake actually looked edible.]

[HE IS SO IMPRESSED the Fon Master is proud of you too, Natalia. Look at dat smile.]

[That cake actually does look tempting...and Perona's sweet tooth knows no limits. She eyes it carefully, before picking up a plate and a knife to maybe cut herself a piece. Honestly, out of some of the other stuff she's seen littering the table of goodies, this one was one of the more appealing.

Plus, she's already sampled some of the actually edible snacks and is so unsuspecting.]

[What's a birthday party without a few games? There are a couple board games scattered about, but anybody who wants to is free to come up with their own!]

[What are these games? He's never seen most of these before, and it's not like they had very fun games at his birthday parties (and also that was a long-ass time ago), so one might find him puzzling over a game with many-colored pieces and a circular sort of board.]

[And Ion is just going to puzzle with him, since he's not entirely familiar with this game. So he'll be searching for the directions, which seem to have been misplaced... somewhere.]

[So gifts aren't required, but anybody who wants to is free to bring something! There's a small table set up by the doorway for gifts, and anybody's welcome to leave them as they come in, or give them straight to Ion themselves.]

[What's a party without mingling about and having fun?]

[ A party where all of Ion's friends don't troll Kohan, that's what.

Kohan obviously came, because what sort of an SO would he be if he didn't? But he still spends most of his time wallflowering it up, being not exactly the social type. Though he might be practically burning a hole through Ion with how much he's watching him. Hey, if it looks like Ion's having fun, Kohan is happy enough to ignore the fact that he's super awkward at parties.

Alternatively, for anyone hanging around at the tail end of the party after Kohan gave Ion his gift, and Ion subsequently showed it off to everyone ever, Kohan can be found off to the side trying to avoid any attempt at eye contact because having Ion show off his drawing like that is kind of sort of really embarrassing ok. ]

[Oh, Kohan, you have no idea.]

[Anise knew that Ion had a boyfriend here in Luceti, but she hadn't actually gotten a chance to meet him before today. But, judging by the way that Ion talked about him, and the way that Ion beamed when he went around to everyone showing them his picture, he was somebody who made Ion really happy, and that was enough for her.]

[Or, y'know, it would be enough once Kohan passed Anise's screening system. She was glad that Ion had found someone who made him happy, but she needed to make sure that he wasn't someone who was lying or someone who would hurt Ion. And maybe she was just really nosy and wanted to find out more about Ion's boyfriend.]

[She'll approach him as the party winds down, a smile on her face.]

[Avoiding eye contact? Not if this doofus can help it. Ven's got an innate friend sense. He can feel the awkwardness radiating off of Kohan so, naturally, it falls upon Ven to zip over and brighten his spirits.]

You know, for what it's worth, I thought it was a nice picture.

THE BIRTHDAY BOY HIMSELF

[The best kind of surprise party was the kind where the birthday boy had no idea he'd be getting one at all. His birthday was two months ago now, after all, but he never really had the opportunity to do anything for it after he came down with the flu that same week. In fact, until now, he's never done anything like have a birthday party for himself, so he'll basically spend the entire day smiling and laughing and having just about the best day ever. After everything that happened on the draft, this was something he could really use.]

[Naturally, he'll spend a lot of time going around thanking everyone way too much for coming and for thinking of him and going to all this trouble just for him, because that's the kind of person he is. Maybe he can shock a few people by casually reminding them he's 18 now, even if he still doesn't exactly look it.]

[At some point he'll meander over to the food table and probably end up eating something that was lovingly cooked by Natalia and may require a few Resurrection artes or something afterwards. And then he might warn a few people away from a few dishes... you know, in the absolute nicest way possible. He likes Natalia and all, but he also likes not giving his friends food poisoning.]

[As the night starts winding down, he'll spend most of the time making small talk with everyone. But once the bulk of the guests have left, he might just be a bit more quiet and reflective about the day -- his spirits still high, if not just a bit subdued. He can't help but think about how none of this would have even been possible if not for being here in Luceti. For all the terrible things that happen here, he has a lot to be grateful for.]

[The moment Perona spots Ion alone - he was always conversing with one or more people - she approaches him quickly, a bag swinging gently from one arm. She of course has her teddy bear with her, and he even is in the party mood with a party hat on top of his normal one and some curly ribbon tied around his neck.

This party is a breath of fresh air for Perona as well. Without the ocean to fall back on to relax her, she's been pretty angry and not nearly as compliant or agreeable to nearly anyone - friends included. Lack of sleep can do that, don'cha know. Thank god for brief naps through the day and this party...the happiness is infectious in the good way.]

Ion-chaaan~! Happy birthday! I have something for you.

[Speaking of infectious happiness... Ion's had just about the brightest smile on his face since the party started, and it's probably even more infectious than the party atmosphere. Perhaps more so, considering how down he was around the draft.]

Oh, Miss Perona! I'm so glad you could make it as well. [Smiiiiile.] You have something for me?

THE BIRTHDAY BOY HIMSELF

[After escorting Ion into the party, Anise will spend the majority of the day making rounds around the room, making sure that everything is taken care of and that all the guests are well-served. After everything calms down, though, she'll track down Ion.]

How do you like it? Are you having fun?

[She's referring to the party, of course.]

[By now, Ion's probably heard that the party was mostly Anise's doing. Which means by the time she's tracked him down, he'll probably have been already looking for her.]

Oh yes, very much so. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a party more! [And then this is the point where's going to reach out and take one of Anise's hands in both of his own with the brightest smile he's had in months you can practically see the sparkles.] Thank you so much, Anise.

[Nephry waits for a quiet time to catch Ion, some time toward the end of the party. She hopes most of all that he had a good time. Will they be here in two years, when he comes of age? She can't help but wonder.]

Enjoying yourself, Ion? [At least she tries not to startle him.] I said it that day, but happy birthday again.

[It would be strange to make it that far. By the time he hits 20 in Luceti, he'll have been here longer than he was even alive on Auldrant. And even with the good mood he's had all day, things like that have probably crossed his mind a few times as well.]

Thank you, Nephry. [Today's probably the first time he's smiled so brightly for so long since the draft.] And yes, I am. I don't think I could thank all of you enough for how much I've enjoyed today.

[ Kohan is trying very hard not to monopolize Ion's time. After all, there's all these other people here just for him, too! But especially towards the end of the day, as Ion's not being swamped by guests, Kohan will drift over towards him more and more often. ]

[After having sampled the very unfortunate cake himself, Emil is quick to nudge the platter of scones of his own making towards Ion when he spots the other boy near the food table. Might as well make sure the birthday boy gets at least something edible at his own party, though he suspects it's a bit too late to warn him away from the cake...]

Oh, hey Ion! Do you want to try one of the scones I made?

[Well, after that mishap with Natalia's cooking, Ven's not totally sure if he has an appetite, but seeing how it's a birthday party, Ven comes wandering over with a cupcake covered in green frosting and star-shaped sprinkles. There's also a wrapped present tucked under his arm.]
