Timey-Wimey Nonsense Part 1

It's early morning in the quiet enclosure that will someday become Luceti. The sun is rising, birds are chirping in that annoyingly cheery way that makes you want to shoot them out of the trees, and the residents are beginning to wake up. Most of them are heading to work, either to farm, or to build, or to work the shops, or even just to prepare a nice breakfast for their families and neighbours. Everyone has something to do.

And then, out of nowhere, a couple hundred strangers show up in the middle of the woods.

At first there is confusion, and no shortage of caution, from the neighbours; newcomers are common enough, but usually they are announced beforehand, and never in such great numbers. The leaders of the town are called in to ask questions. The newcomers are free to explore, but any aggression will be met in kind; if need be, the Filial of the past will defend their homes. They're hoping it won't come to that, however. You're stuck with one another for a long time, after all.

Thankfully, there is one man who might be able to bring the natives and newcomers together: Tyr.

...And the other guy, maybe. We'll see.

Can you blame me for thinking it at the time? You know if I got lost in said snow I could have easily frozen to death or gotten frostbite.

You have any clue why we got sent back in time? Because you know how much I love time travel.

I would have come for you eventually. If I remembered. There was a lot of mead on hand that day...

None whatsoever. But it does give me pause in hunting too often, lest we end lines that would flourish without our intervention.

The butterfly effect.

what Spock had said - old Spock, not his Spock - the time lines simply
diverged, not ended. ]}

Butterfly effect? What is this?

It's a theory that stems from the idea that if you go back in time and maybe accidentally step on something as small and insignificant as a butterfly, you could change the entire future.

Basically, a small change can cause ripples that turn giant in the future.

Tis no mere theory, my friend. Tis a valid concern. Such things are told in warning to young Aesir many a time.

Yeah, I kind of lived it. A change in the past, my past, caused the destruction of an entire planet, an almost mass extinction of an entire people.

What change was that, Jim?

Neros ship came back into my past and destroyed the ship my father was on. Or, even more basic - Nero came back into the past.

The mad king that played a violin as his city and people burned? [ He'd heard the name but once in human history, but that seems far fetched considering the disparity in times. Another Nero, another madman. ]

No, not that one. A Romulan who ran a mining ship.

I have not heard of these people. What quarrel did he have with the planet he laid to waste?

He blamed Spock for failing to save his home world when their sun went super nova. He wanted revenge, so he destroyed Vulcan.

_{[ He said it without feeling, just stating bare facts. It was a
painful memory, but had been even more painful for Spock. He had never been
proud of how he exploited his grief afterwards, but it had been necessary.

There are similar tales of vengeance in the halls of Asgard, though none with as much devastation. Never has a whole realm, a whole world been lost out of anger and malice. You and your loved one have my condolences.

About 20,000 survived and last I heard the colonizing of their new planet was going well.

It was for five minutes and then Star Fleet tallied up the damage I had done to the Enterprise and it wasn't so brave or full of valor.

Details. Lives were saved! A vessel might be prepared in time but lives? There is no replacing them.

With my gun? Pretty good. With a bow and arrow? Not so much. Rocks are so-so, and don't bother handing me a spear.

Your phaser has a stun setting, does it not?

Yes, that's one of them. There are others, but I prefer stun.

Why? You planning on having me stun our catch before you go in for the final blow?

I wish you to feel as though you have contributed. Not all game we stun may be what we wish to kill. There are many beasts and not all would suit our purposes.

So why waste the effort going after them if we aren't going to want to kill them anyways? Wouldn't it be more efficient just to go after the ones we want?
