Day 3, whenever

[aerialassault]

[This wasn't so unusual a scenario for Cliff as it was for Korra. He had recently participated in a similar battle by his count, although there was less Symbology on the field and far too many wings that were a potential boon or problem. Cliff was just glad that he found that jacket in the village during his short stay so far. It helped keep his covered.

But even a brawler like him gets annoyed at a mob after a while. Seeing an opening, Cliff ducked for cover and, after checking for any immediate threats, pulled out his Quad Scanner. Perhaps this time it could help him learn something--]

Damn! It's still busted.

[precipitous]

[ Korra needed a breather herself, so she was glad for the break between cultist attacks. She'd like to take the opportunity to sit for a moment, get a drink, maybe head inside for a bite - but the guy with the weird gadget catches her eye. What was he doing? ]

What is that thing?

[aerialassault]

[He sighed and shifted his arm so that she could take a look at the holo-screen.]

It's a scanner. Not like the ones they gave us for this job. It's supposed to be able to analyze the objects and stuff around... but the readings have been off since I got to this place. Everything's off the charts.

[precipitous]

[ She looks a little skeptical. ] Why would you need to do that? Analyze stuff, I mean. Kind of seems like a waste of time.

[aerialassault]

Knowing your enemy, kid. [He flashed her a quick grin.] I dunno
'bout you, but I like knowing what I'm up against.

...Besides. I did learn one thing from it.

[precipitous]

[ ...Alright, she'll give him that. She's never had to fight soldiers like the cultists before. Maybe there was something useful she could glean from him. ]

What's that?

[aerialassault]

Whatever's weird in the village is weird here too.

[precipitous]

[ A look. ] Well, duh! I could have told you that! Didn't all the people with wings tip you off? I don't know about you, but the only other place I've seen a bunch of people with wings is that village.

[aerialassault]

[He returned that look.] Who said anything about wings? Strategy, missie. We can't rely on our senses or the terrain, but we can maybe keep track of where the Shifts are.

[It was the only correlation he found. The buildings in the village and the barrier itself gave the same readings-- it had to be one of the Shifts.]

[precipitous]

[ And that leaves her confused again. She hadn't been in Luceti long, and her understanding of what shifts were was still a bit hazy. ]

You mean like...where the Malnosso magic is?

[aerialassault]

Sure...

[He's not sure what to think of the Shifts himself. All he knew was that he still wanted to punch someone for February.]

I heard something about there being guys out here who can mess up your mind with a Shift, and my thought was maybe to keep tabs on 'em. But, that ain't working. Everything must be a Shift 'round here.

[precipitous]

[ Her face lights up in recognition of what he's describing. ]

Oh, right! My friend told me about them. He said they can stop your powers. [ Like chiblockers that don't even have to touch you. ]

[aerialassault]

[A nod.]

I heard 'bout that too. Good thing I don't need any, but some of my friends have some magic of their own...

[He shrugged and closed down the scanner.]

Waste of time. Thought there'd be something here.

[precipitous]

[ She eyes him curiously. ]

Were you looking for something specific?

[aerialassault]

[He chuckled, smiling like a man with a secret.]

How do ya feel 'bout demolition work?

[precipitous]

[ She can’t help a grin at the question. She was pretty good at wrecking things... ]

Depends on what we’re demolishing.

[aerialassault]

[That was just what he wanted to see.]

You see those buildings over there? [He nodded toward the taller ones a few blocks off, where the safety net ended and the disputed territory began.]

I'm thinking that they might want to be putting detainees there. Don't you think that taking 'em down would mess up their plans?

[precipitous]

[ She strokes her chin thoughtfully. ]

I’d say it would. And I’m all for messing up their plans.

[aerialassault]

Yep.

Problem is, I think they're shifted. No idea how.

[precipitous]

Can't we just...try knocking them down and seeing how that goes first?

[aerialassault]

Do you want to try and see if you break a hand?

[precipitous]

[ She sticks out her bottom lip. ]

I don't know about you, but I don't have to punch stuff to knock it down.

[aerialassault]

Yea? And here I was thinking I should'a brought a few EM explosives.

[He grinned.]

Whadya say we try?

[precipitous]

[ She nods, grinning in turn. ]

Let's do it.
