[ Joshua has been having fun with this experiment! Mostly. Enough fun that even on his sort-of birthday, he's out and about trying to catch people. And when he spots Hoshikyo under a sprig, he quickly realizes that this is an opportunity he does not want to pass up.

But perhaps he shouldn't have gotten so comfortable, because the moment he joins her under the mistletoe something about his demeanor shifts entirely, and he reaches to clasp her hand with his own. ]

Oh, Hoshikyo! It's been far too long!

[magicalesbian]

Pretty-boy?

[For all of two seconds, she's horrified. Oh no, oh no, this is not who she wanted to start out with under the mistletoe for the new year...!]

[But then he's holding her hands and looking into her eyes, and suddenly the impact of his words really seem to strike her.]

It... it really has been, huh? It's the new year now and everything... [She finds herself bringing up her there hand, laying it over his.] Are you... you know, doing okay?

How can you ask that when you already know the answer?

[ If Joshua's brain-to-mouth filter were engaged even the slightest, he'd be getting a little bit worried with how much he seemed to be spilling, but as it was it was as if he couldn't get the words out fast enough. ]

Here you are, my most trusted friend in all of Luceti, appearing before my eyes for the first time in over two months! I've been so worried. What if some trouble had befallen you?

[Somewhere, deep in the confines of Kari's mind, that spirit is cracking the fuck up.]

[But closer towards the surface, any hint of just how odd this situation is seems to be completely absent. Instead, Kari can only hold Josh's hand tighter, frowning in confusion. That's right, she'd been avoiding him... and he was really this worried about her?]

I... I had no idea you felt so strongly about this. [She turns away with a dramatic glance towards the sky.] I'm sorry, but I just... I wasn't ready to face you again. Not after what happened on Halloween.

[ The spirit can go shove it for the moment okay. Unless it wants to come out and get blindsided by some mistletoe as well. ]

As I'd feared... it was my fault after all. [ Joshua's gaze drops to the ground between them. ] And yet I've done nothing to make amends these past months. No wonder you've avoided me. But I at least would have wished to know you were alright! [ He stares back at her again, his gaze intense and sincere. ] I've lost so many of my friends over my years here in Luceti already...

[That brings her gaze back, her eyes filled with pity now, looking at Joshua.]

Just how long have you been in Luceti? I mean, I'm sure you still have other friends, right?

[But he called her his most trusted friend... could that really be true?]

None so close. I've already entered my fifth year in this place... I've outlasted so many of the others. I had feared I'd lost you as well. And without friends, what point is there to a birthday celebration?

[ Did he not mention the celebrating his birthday on the first day of the year thing? Because this is totally his way of blabbing about it while he's experimentally compelled to spill everything he'd never actually want to tell her. ]

...there is a point to it!

[Her grip suddenly tightens and she pulls his hand closer, looking up at him with a serious look in her eyes.]

There is! After all, you... you still have me, don't you? And I'm not just going to sit by and let you say such lonely things like that!

[ Well then, don't mind if Joshua just stares back and grips her hand. ]

I do now... but it may be too late for it to be worth any sort of celebration.

Why do you say that?

It's so late in the day that it's almost completely passed! And no celebration has so much as been planned...

That's... that's so sad. Everyone should be able to celebrate their birthday!

[The feelings are just too overwhelming -- that feeling of hopelessness in thinking there was no point in even having a birthday was all too familiar.]

I know what that feels like... I mean, I didn't exactly have many friends growing up. The only reason I have any now is because... my life is so different with magic. But I haven't even celebrated my birthday once since coming to this place... [Nevermind that it only passed once, okay.]

[ Why would they mind details like that? ]

Perhaps, but what's another? I've already had so many birthdays that they've long since become pointless. Maybe this is fate's way of letting me know that it's time to just let them go entirely...

Aw-- come on, now! How many birthdays have to pass for you to get that cynical? Surely you've had at least a few good ones here and there in the past, right? Maybe not in Luceti, but back home?

Certainly none later than my 150th. Ever since then, even the idea of a celebration has been little more than a pointless daydream. Oh, Hoshikyo, I have long since become simply too old...

[magicalesbian]

150th... [Okay, that needs a second to process.] ...c-come on, you don't look a day over 107!

[Wait, wait, not the time for jokes. She pulls her hand away from his and then reaches out, putting both hands on either of his shoulders, gripping them tightly.]

Look, I told you there was still a point, didn't I? You still have me, after all.

Happy Birthday.

[And here's the kiss.]

[ Oh, and here's the kiss indeed. And what a kiss it is, so wrapped up in gratitude and emotion and perhaps... even some obligatory romance? He puts his hand on her shoulders in return as he kisses back, having no better way to express the feelings her words have brought up inside of him. After a moment, he slowly steps back and pulls away, a smile still on his lips. ]

[ And the moment the words are out of his mouth, he blinks and immediately looks up at the mistletoe that he suddenly remembers existing again. ]

[Ah yes, all sorts of nice things were wrapped up in the kiss. She smiles as they pull away, the softest of girlish blushes on her face.]

[What?]

Wha-- what the hell!?

[EXAGGERATED STEP BACKWARDS HAPPENING NOW.]

[Oh god did they just...?]

[BRB KNEELING DOWN]

[PICKING UP A BIG HANDFUL OF SNOW]

[RINSING MOUTH AND FACE AND HANDS AND OH GOD WHY]

[Okay, okay, she's cool again. That all happened in less than 5 seconds, and now she's standing and facing Joshua again and--]

...okay. So that happened.

That was... certainly something. You know, if you'd prefer, we can both agree that that didn't happen.

[ Said casually, because what do you mean he just blabbed a bunch of secrets he didn't want to actually admit to her, you see none of that here. ]

[...it's certainly a tempting offer. But while she'd be more than happy to forget about that whole kiss ordeal, it's not quite so easy to brush off whatever the hell all that other stuff was.]

[So instead she'll just brush on his question with one of her own.]
