While Jack Sparrow waited for Lieutenant Kennedy on the front steps of Cullen House, he put the finishing touches on a map that he'd been designing for Jilly. There was another sheet of paper lying on the step beside him that was covered with a number of different pictures, all of them pretty sparrows. Some of them had bold cross marks through them, as though they had been found wanting and unworthy. Every so often he would pause in his work and search the stretch of beach to the north of the house, each time expecting that familiar form to come into view.
