[ dawn's kept her promise to buffy and tried to stay ranged as much as possible. crossbows are kind of her thing, anyway, and she's been doing okay if she doesn't concentrate on how shooting enemies who look like people and don't turn into dust when you get a bolt through the heart kind of makes her feel sick. the sick feeling passes, though, and her aim keeps getting more consistent.

but her perfect hiding spot became a little less perfect when a large group of soldiers came over the next rise, and dawn quickly decided to move on and find somewhere less busy.

[ oh hey this barn is occupado. buffy is winding a bandage around her shin when she hears a sound and snaps to attention. only... ]

[ oh hey, big sister. dawn doesn't lower her sword, but she does relax a little and move closer. ]

The mix was too mix-y in my last spot. I had to move somewhere else before I ended up sliced and diced and julienned.

That's me, free range Dawn. [ she watches anxiously, biting her lip. ] Do you have any more bandage-y stuff? Because don't freak out, but I might need to use some.

...Oh god yes.

[ she rolls up her pant leg, points to the scrape running the length of her calf. ]

When you fall while running fast, it hurts. Learn something new every single day. [ quickly she adds ] But that's it, because I've been staying ranged whenever I can.

C'mon, sit down. [ she's up, and gesturing to the vacated hay bale. ]

[ dawn obligingly sits; there's bucking buffy's Sisterly Edicts about boys or short skirts or staying out a little too late, then there's battle. here, dawn will leave the arguing to argue at the door. ] I feel a little like I'm in a very, very serious game of paintball.

[ she begins by examining the injury -- she's no nurse, but she's had to patch herself up a few times. ]

Paintball officially suddenly seems so much less like a fun weekend activity, from this moment on.

[A hand suddenly reaches out of the barn to grasp her sword wrist. Really, he's just trying to ensure that she doesn't startle and stab him.]

[ grabbing people is a great way to get stabbed, archie, and it's only the fact that three days of battle have brought back skills she hasn't used in a while that saves archie from the trouble that would result from her proving that.

she yanks her arm away, raising her sword and then lowers it slightly, squinting. ]

Archie? [ she ducks inside after a quick look over her shoulder. ] Just an fyi, grabbing the jumpy chick with the sword is a great way to end up needing to explain why your girlfriend stabbed you.

You're faster than I expected. [Have an impressed boyfriend. He peers out briefly, then turns his back to keep an eye on the opposite door.] Besides, if I'm going to be stabbed by someone... [He leaves that unsaid. He cocks his pistol, the reloading of which had inspired coming into the barn in the first place.] How many are on that side?

Slayer's little sister. I pick stuff up. [ the back-turning means he misses her brief grimace. ] Could you just not get stabbed? Because if you get stabbed I have to stab the person who stabbed you, and it's just a circle of stabbing. Also, badness.

[ the gun makes a shadow cross over her face, briefly, and she's glad archie's turned away so she doesn't have to explain it. with warren in luceti, guns are even less of something she likes dealing with.

...but that's her issue, not his, and if it comes down to a couple more nightmares and archie not dying she'll take the first option, thanks. before answering archie's question, she takes another peek outside. ] Two-- no, I lied. Three. But I'm not sure if they're staying or going.

[His voice lowers.] Not too bad, then. Keep an eye on them while I see if anyone followed me. [He hadn't seen anyone going in, but there's always the possibility he missed someone. He heads down to the other end of the barn, stopping only briefly to make sure a body lying nearby is dead.]

That's me, lookout girl. [ dawn tightens her grip on her sword, but honestly being with archie makes some of the tension leave her frame. not all of it because she's not stupid, but she's not used to fighting alone. ]

[Archie is only gone for a moment before he quietly runs back, looking a bit like he's walking on eggshells. He learned to quiet-walk like a pro back when he was a kid sneaking around on his very first ship.] No one's coming from the stern. Have they gone yet?

Stern... right, ships. [ she shakes her head once to clear it-- that should have been an easy connection-- then peeks out again. ] They kind of look like they're stopping for a second? No-- wait, yes. Maybe they're waiting for orders, or something?
