[One not-quite-dead soldier falls from the sky and lands with s "WHUMP!" only feet away from Hughes, a bullet hole through its chest. Archie is about five yards away, ducking under the awning of a shed and reloading his pistol. It only fires one shot at a time, but it's what he has, and he's recovering from a wound, so he's saving the sword as a last resort while he takes out any enemies in flight.]

[ Damn. That's the problem with airborne enemies, really; you never know when the next one is going to hit the ground. Hughes does the fallen soldier the courtesy of ending his suffering before it drags on too long and makes a run to help out his own fellow combatant.

He even comes with friendly advice between shots. ]

I highly recommend using a better gun in the future!

Yes, thank you, Mr. Hughes! [He pours in the powder.] I'll be sure to make a quick hop back to Earth beforehand next time! [He jams the ball in along with with a scrap of fabric and sprinkles primer in the pan.] Two hundred years after my time! [He cocks the pistol, ducks out, and takes down another soldier, hitting it in the wing--not fatal, but painful beyond belief.]

I certainly wouldn't object to helping you find a way to time travel for it! [ Or he's just freaking out because people keep turning up around him unexpectedly with groups of soldiers of their own. And Archie hasn't got any magical powers to go along with it. ]

A gun that only fires once is more dangerous to you than it is to them!

[ ...well, at least he's got a bladed weapon for backup purposes. It's not even so much the ineffectiveness of one bullet, because one bullet can make all the difference (can start uprisings that lead to war).

It's the fact that he has a single-bullet gun, a bladed weapon to hold off an army of winged enemies and doesn't have any backup with him. This does not seem wise. ]

Tell you what, Archie- [ Ah, one moment, taking another Third Party member out. ] I'll watch your back for the rest of the day today, and when we get back to our barracks, I'll teach you a thing or two about guns that don't take so long to get reloaded!

[Archie knows how dangerous flintlocks can be, Hughes. One did an excellent job of killing him.]

I learned how to use a gun that didn't even fire bullets on my own, Mr. Hughes. The trouble isn't knowing how to use one, it's having one to use. [He pauses suddenly, touching his injured ribs with a very, very brief wince of pain. Then he glances at his hand as if to check for blood. Nothing's ripped open yet, yay.]

Just a scratch. [He said the same thing when he was shot in the stomach, though, so.] It's stitched up already. I can move.

[ On a better day, he'd call bullshit on that. But for the moment, "I can move" will have to do, because there are a lot of enemies and only so many places that can provide suitable cover. ]

If you can move long enough for us to reach a few more helping hands, that should work finely.

[Archie chooses to take Hughes' attitude the way he would that of a senior officer, shuts up, and obeys. A chain of command may be easily abused, but it does make things easier.] There's no one out there but Third Party, then?
