Any day, up to the night of the 5th

[Giles is staying back with McCoy's camp, for the most part. He can fetch and carry, with direction, or do some rudimentary setup. Mostly, though, he'll be patrolling so everyone else can do the setting up. Don't think you can sneak up on the ex-Watcher that easily - his eyes might not be working so well, but every other sense is on high alert for signs of the Third Party or hostile wildlife.

Feel free to catch him as much as five minutes away from the camp, armed with the recommended gear as well as weaponry - whether he uses the crossbow, the pistol, or the black spell book depends on what comes at him.

His journal stays with him constantly, on and transmitting. If he comes across a villager, hears one nearby, or is hailed over the journal, he'll assist where he can. The lack of power cap means that he's a little more powerful magically than he is normally, and thanks to Catherine's tip his Filial magic is working double time.]

Day 1, near the hospital camp

[Jack is patrolling around the borders of the camp, keeping an especial eye out for tigers. Tigers are some of the deadliest beasts in any jungle, or so the stories from his mother's village insist, and he doesn't want anyone dragged off by one.

When he sees Giles with a crossbow, he is tempted to turn and walk in the opposite direction. But then he recalls the blindness. Bugger.]

All right, former Watcher?

[Giles lowers the crossbow he'd been about to raise before Jack spoke.]

Fine. Nothing more dangerous than expected, yet. [There are a few spots of blood on his clothes already, but he doesn't appear to be injured.]

[The pirate notices that blood but says nothing about it. If the man seems okay? He is not going to bring up a few stray bloodstains.]

And just how dangerous have you been expecting them, Rupert?

Something getting at the camp. People getting killed.

If any of that's happened yet, I haven't heard it.

Could you find your way back to the camp, lad? Bein' unsighted and all?

One-Eyed Rupert, eh? Careful, former Watcher; that name might stick with the wrong sorts. If you'll be very kind, don't shoot me in the back as I leave you, eh? Just in case you were havin' difficulties identifying Third Party miscreants. Wouldn't want an accident.

[Jack will give no assurances on that as he returns to the jungle to patrol.]

[Giles will wait until the footsteps are gone, wait until he can't sense the pirate's presence anymore.

Then he continues his patrol, wondering how best to caution Jack more strongly for another day.]

Day 2

[Ayumu is just heading back toward the camp, sticking to the trees whenever possible, when her path crosses Giles' patrol. She doesn't notice it's him at first, of course; she just pauses when she notices movement up ahead, one hand shifting to the hilt of her closest weapon as she waits and listens.]

[Giles hears footsteps approaching, and then stopping. That...is decidedly suspicious. He can't see any sign of the overlarge wings that mark the Third Party, but that doesn't mean anything. Whoever it is could be hiding. it might be a Shift Hunter.

...it could also be a villager, but better safe than sorry. So he raises the crossbow and points it in the direction he'd heard Ayumu's footsteps coming from.]

I'm going to count to three. If you're a villager, I would appreciate some notice. If you're not, you still might wish to move before I shoot you.

[...ah. She knows that voice. Ayumu hesitates for an instant, then pitches her voice a little lower, imitating the sound of her brother's (since she's dressed like him and all....)]

Is it wise to warn a potential enemy? The Third Party isn't so kind.

Maybe not.

But you'd obviously spotted me, or knew I was prowling around. I didn't see that it made much difference, especially since I have a very good record so far of not shooting villagers and wanted to continue that.

[There's a brief pause before she continues.]

Is it wise for you to be out here? Or has your vision improved?

[Giles tilts his head curiously.]

I presume the answer is "no" to both questions, then.

[Admittedly she wasn't being as quiet as she could be, but that still was no mean feat. Ayumu frowns slightly, but has to concede the point.]

I'll accompany you until you return to the camp, then.

[ he's coming in for his store of food. looking for something that isn't, well, putrid and possibly poisonous, like what he's been coming across in the forest - when he spots him. dressed in a pair of cutoff jeans and smeared from chin to chest with the blood of the enemy, he looks like a rather morbid ad for some jean company. ]

[Giles does not recognize the voice, and so he does reflexively raise the crossbow before he realizes that whoever is approaching him does not have the large wings that mark Third Party soldiers. He lowers the weapon a second later.]

[ he's holding his hands up. it's reflexive and stupid, but when someone points a weapon at you, your brain immediately goes back to the comforts of old westerns. ]
