[Gun reloaded.] We should go back.

[ she looks as though she wants to argue but...no, she knows when a point is beyond fair. ]

Probably. Y-yeah. Now that there's no worry...[ of being followed. ]

...What's wrong?

Just...not a feeling I'm used to, that's all.

Going back to camp?

[Going back at all?]

Being the escortee rather than the escort.

[ she isn't sure if archie sees it that way, but she certainly does. ]

I'm not escorting you, Buffy. At least no more than you're escorting me. No one should be out here alone after dark. [He corrects himself.] No one with merely human powers, at any rate. And no one with a tendency to fall asleep suddenly.

[ and she has a date to keep once the sun sinks away. a date with a painted cannibal king; a flicker of guilt crosses her face. there are things about this draft that lighten her heart, not burden it. ]

So I keep hearing. All the worst things come out at night.

And many of them during the day. Let's go.

[ she begins walking. ]

How long have you known how to shoot a gun?

[He walks with her.] My grandfather taught me when I was...

[He has to think about it so long that he doesn't come up with a response. Really young, apparently.]

...That young, huh? Wow.

He wanted a grandson in the navy. I think I must have been around nine or ten, I suppose.

...Did you join 'cause of him, then?

Him and his stories. [He remembers the old man fondly, even though he's now aware of how manipulated he was by his good, if selfish, intentions.]

Is there anything else you think you would've been, if the navy thing had been a no-go?

Now? I don't know. When I was nine or ten I thought I wanted to be an actor. [He cracks a smile at the mere thought.]

Big time, big screen celeb, huh?

[ oh, wait. ] Or big stage, I guess.

[A soft laugh.] I don't rightly know what I was thinking. I was in love with theatre, and one of the actresses, but...I doubt I would have been much better suited to the stage than I was to the navy.

A puppy-love crush, huh?

I suppose you could call it that. I saw her as Cleopatra and couldn't stop thinking about her. I sneaked back to try to see her once. She took pity on a young boy in love back then. I met her again some years later, but I don't think she recognized me.

Us in the twentieth-slash-twenty-first centuries just stuck magazine cut-outs up on our walls. Y'know, when there was an actor or two to fall head-over-heels for.

I suppose there were other very good reasons for the photograph to be invented.

Like scrapbooking.

Scrapb--never mind. [They've reached the camp.] I trust you can find a cot on your own. I should get back to the perimeter.
