[The vines were sudden and thicker than they had ever been, evading Raine's knife as she tried to keep from getting caught. She can hear Sheena's voice through the wall of leaves that came between them, but barely. She can hardly keep her own footing as she tries to evade oncoming vines, suddenly finding herself feeling nearly tossed around--and very stuck.

Ridiculous.]

[This is no big deal, right? This knife should be more than enough to free her so they can get back to everyone else.

...Except the hand holding it is also stuck fast now, unable to slash more than an inch or so. It's almost like the jungle is laughing at their efforts.]

Raine, are you stuck too?

[wise_maiden]

Are you okay? [It was good to still hear her voice on the other side, at least. It wouldn't do for them to be too far from each other.] -- and yes. I can't reach my knife.

[corrinesbell]

I'm fine, just...stuck. I've got my knife but it doesn't do me any good when my arm won't move.

[wise_maiden]

[Raine falls quiet, thinking for a few moments. The more she struggles, the tighter the vines seem. The less... where had she learned something like this before? Then it hits her...]


... I think I can get us out of this, but I'm going to have to use magic.

[And a normal spell might not be easily cast from this position. That's the problem.]

[corrinesbell]

Well do it! This is getting kinda tight.

[and if there's another bridge to cross later then they'll burn it as they go.]

[wise_maiden]

Fine, just hang on. And don't struggle--that makes it worse.

[If only there was enough sunlight, or any kind of light source to make it work. Would photon work? She mentally struggles for a cast, despite the awkward positioning. Just maybe...]

Photon!

[And there was the light. The plant seemed to recoil, the thick vines twitching and suddenly releasing her as she directed the light with the filial magic toward Sheena's side, through the leafy curtain.

Like having a sorcerer's ring in Gaoracchia forest. Hmm.]

[the light breaks through the leaves, and half a minute later Sheena is free of the vines. In her free hand now she will carry a card - ready for fire whenever necessary. Raine's voice wasn't that far away, so it's only a few steps to find her again]

This is getting a little ridiculous.

[wise_maiden]

We have to be more careful. [How annoying. For now she'll keep the 'light' on, trying to create some semblance of a path through the vines. She reaches down to grab her knife as Sheena approaches.] ... Ugh. Lets get moving.

[corrinesbell]

I dunno if it's possible to be more careful.

[but she'll try. The correct direction is harder to find now. She's just going to pick one and go with it. Hopefully they reach a clearer area soon.]

You're okay right?

[wise_maiden]

[Wherever Sheena leads, Raine will try to keep the light in that direction. Hoping it won't draw anything else out.]

Yes, I'm fine. [She's just quietly annoyed at herself.]

Good.

[then it will only be a few more silent minutes until they are free of the dense plant life. When Sheena steps into a clearer space, it's impossible not to sigh.]

Finally. We've gotta be close.

[wise_maiden]

Now that we're out of there, I can hear the sounds of fighting again.

[corrinesbell]

Do we go toward those?

[wise_maiden]

That's probably where the main branch of the group is. They might need us.

[corrinesbell]

Hopefully they don't need us too much.

[But, in that direction they go!]

[wise_maiden]

[There are still traps on this side, but thankfully avoidable. Some even seem to have been disarmed already--a good indicator of the group having been in the area before.

There's also a new sound though. Something following, at a great speed.]

[corrinesbell]

[The comparatively easy passage is a reprieve, at least.

But.]

Stop. [and she stops, waiting for Raine to follow suit and dropping her voice.] Listen. I hear the fighting, but not the forest.

[she may not have angelic superhearing, but she's been trained to listen.] Something's coming.

[wise_maiden]

I thought something seemed off.

[She waits for Sheena's lead however-- right now there's nothing visible. Just a rippling feeling of apprehension amidst all of that rainforest heat.]

[corrinesbell]

...It's coming on the ground. Come on, I don't think we have a lotta time.

[She's running now, looking as she goes for the best place to make their trail disappear.]

[wise_maiden]

Right -- just lead the way. [She does her best to keep up with the ninja, of course not being nearly as fast, but she's decently nimble for a mage.]

[corrinesbell]

[There - one with a trunk that has enough thick vines that they might make it pretty far before anything reached them. Sheena stops at the base of this tree, testing the strength of one of those vines. But they're as thick as her leg in most places, this should be fine.]

...You're gonna go up first.

[wise_maiden]

[She starts to open her mouth to say otherwise-- but this isn't really the time and place to have that discussion. Instead she nods, turning toward the tree to try and get up there as quickly as possible.]

[corrinesbell]

[She's letting Raine go first so there's someone below her in case she slips. Another few moments and Sheena's coming right up behind her, and then beside her, ready to give her a hand up if necessary.

Which is good, because the pair of Shift Hunters should break through nearby at about the time they reach the lowest branches.]

[wise_maiden]

[And of course, since Raine's the one who used the magic, they've been on her trail since the vines fiasco. There's hardly any time to get a moment for breathing properly.

She only vaguely remembered the monsters from that incident--but these seemed worse somehow.] ... Shift hunters.
