"Oh." He removed the tube from her pocket and smeared some on his lips before replacing it in her pocket with an additional pat. "That's very nice, that stuff."

Since there wasn't much else to do while hanging over her shoulder, Jack returned his hands to her pockets as well.

[herotypical]

"Did you...?" A laugh; quiet and thoughtful. To laugh loudly and vibrantly in this cloying jungle seemed a crime. "You did. You totally did. Good. That'll soften you up."

Buffy carried him rather gently, actually. And she carried him silently for a while before -- eventually: "You're not really going to talk to Archie about...y'know." Kissing Dawn.

"Why wouldn't I? What if he wants to discuss it, darling?"

Jack wasn't even that sure what exactly she was talking about.

[herotypical]

"That's just it. He shouldn't want to. If he wants to discuss it? You tell him he doesn't want to. Forcefully."

Danger? Check. Interrupted intimacy? Check. Misinterpretations? Finally, check.

"...We're not talking about Grell, are we. Or about his taste in hats. Or about Horatio."

The pirate was trying to get down from her shoulder, now. It wasn't a position one wanted to be in while trying to defend oneself from Angry Buffy.

[herotypical]

She wrestled to keep him in place. However? If he genuinely really does want to get down? She will help him back onto his feet.

"...Why would we be talking about Horatio?"

[all7seas]

"Dunno. Because he adores his Horatio, I suppose." He rests against her before firmly disentangling himself and slipping to the ground. Wrestling with Buffy is all fine and good but not in the middle of a jungle and a serious conversation.

"Annie...why are you angry with me?" But his mind had already leaped to Dawn.

[herotypical]

"...Not angry." Just -- hmm. Preemptively overprotective. And that sort of feeling has a tough, angry edge on Buffy Summers. "I promise -- angerless."

[all7seas]

"And you want a vow from me that no words regarding your Dawn ever pass between Kennedy and myself?



Why?"

[herotypical]

"I don't want her to become gossip."

And as much as she enjoyed Jack's influence when it came to her own extracurriculars, she didn't need Jack influencing her sister's significant someone.

"And what if Kennedy and myself discuss you?"

"You haven't," she sounded so certain; after all, Archie certainly couldn't be so great an actor and there was no way that he knew about the two of them.

[all7seas]

"I haven't," he confirmed. "But I think he knows nonetheless. Now how could that be, Buffy? Hmm?"

[herotypical]

"Because he and I had words. And he knows some things but not the thing."

He knew, for example, the extent of the wreckage that had been Buffy during the week Jack had been dead.

[all7seas]

"'The' thing? And what were the some things that you shared?"

[herotypical]

"He doesn't know that you know that I..." Some hand gestures, here. "I think he thinks he's keeping a secret for me."

Buffy, this would be so much more helpful with full sentences.

[all7seas]

"Doesn't know that I know that you what, exactly?"

This was the best conversation they could possibly be having in the middle of a jungle in the middle of a war with Jack wounded.

[herotypical]

Somehow, these drafts created some sort of odd perfect storm of revelation and honesty. The last one had included a similar dialogue, at least.

Buffy inspected the tip of her scythe in the dark. Too dark to see, but she pretended anyway. "Doesn't know that you know that I've...that I'm -- that there's some sort of mutualness involved."

"AH. Erm. Of course. That---was what I had thought. Wondered."

And suddenly the pirate's heart wanted to thud directly out of that damaged chest. He'd never thought she'd thought it was any kind of mutual before.

[herotypical]

"Last time, Jack." She walked a little faster. Just a little bit ahead of him. "When you were -- gone."

Buffy hoped these words were signal enough for what had to have happened. She had so genuinely broken down on that bridge. She hadn't needed to say anything. Archie had seen the mutual feelings in the break down.

The pirate hurried to catch up with her. To take her hand. He hadn't thought she was referring to that dark time.

"We won't speak of it."

[herotypical]

She held onto his hand. Tightly. And murmured her agreement on the matter of not speaking and slowed her step just enough to show sympathy for the pirate's tired, wounded state.

"As far as Archie's concerned, it's a thing I'm very much not acting on." Notably, this brought Jack into another odd confidence. Dawn, who certainly knew of things, was keeping those things from Archie in turn.

Sparrow shoved a broad-leaved fern out of the way to reveal his fallen log, now devoid of orchids and showing signs of battle all around but missing the corpses of the shift hunters.

He was glad they weren't there, gruesome things.

"Seems that most people believe that now. Annie? It won't be forever."

All the time...

She, too, was glad to have the bodies gone. Although they were both still splattered with the rest of the evidence.

"I know. We just gotta wait it out." Buffy kicked aside some churned dirt and sod. "It's a good cause and all."
