He rolled his eyes at the insinuation, then shook his head. "She doesn't like heroes, no." A hesitation, and another drink of water. "She begs me not to be one, when this happens, and so does Jilly. I don't rightly understand what they mean, sometimes."

"I'm not sure. I think one has to be in the military to understand. Or some equivalent." He was thinking of Buffy. Buffy understood.

Jack simply quiets down at this and finishes his water. "They're likely pining for you, Jilly and Dawn. Have you been writing them?"

"Every day. Sometimes more than once." Another drink of water. "Pining isn't the right word. They want news of everyone."
