How exactly is that stupid?

I gave you a black eye when I was eleven just because you annoyed me. How much worse do you think I can do to you now at eighteen - nineteen, however bloody old I am thanks to Luceti's mucking about - when I actually well and truly hate you?

I think you've forgotten that both of us are older and stronger and I'm fairly certain I hate you more than you hate me. Just tossing that out there.

That's because you were raised to hate. But since you always hid behind your wand and your pureblood status, it's a touch ironic that you haven't got either of those now, huh?

A touch, but I've still got a gun and my fists. Keep that in mind.

And I suppose you're going to tell me next that you're a better person because you were raised to love everyone, is that it?

A gun you might get lucky with. I seriously doubt I need to worry about your fists.

Oh, hell no. I was raised believing I ought to give people a chance. But once that chance is up, I'm allowed to go right on hating with the best of them.

Consider yourself lucky I've other things to worry about.

I don't see how that makes you any better than me. I'm judging based on how people react to being given a chance. My window of time is just a tad smaller than yours.

[As though only just realizing that he'd said anything inappropriate, Ron looks at Malfoy for the first time in several minutes.]

What's wrong? You go deaf when you suddenly find it convenient?

And there's that irritating buzzing sound again. [And he's starting to wander again.]

[He scoffs, shaking his head as he looks back towards the trees.]

Must be hard, going through life being an ignorant prat.

You'd know all about that, wouldn't you?

Not really; just because I got to deal with one every time I had class with Slytherins doesn't mean I give a damn about their lives.

Face it, Weasley. As much as I hate to admit it, you and I are more alike than you'd think.

[He was almost beginning to fall into an okay pace of trading absent-minded insults when that last thing Malfoy says almost makes him jump.]

What the hell does that mean?

You mean it isn't obvious? Merlin, you're a bit oblivious.

Both from pureblood families, fathers who work in the Ministry [Or did, in Draco's case], families that have been sorted into the same house for centuries, arrogant and ignorant just as much as the other bloke, judgmental, quick to anger...need I go on?

[He doesn't like it. At all. But he's thought about it on and off thanks to Hermione.]

[Ron just stares. Part of him wants to go off on him about hey, he's not arrogant or ignorant or judgmental or-... fine, he can't deny that last one. But his face goes red with unspent anger as he realizes that Malfoy's saying all of this about himself, too. Draco 'I'm-the-greatest' Malfoy was actually talking down on himself. Of all the times for him to show off his humanity.]

The main difference between us, Malfoy, is that I might be all of those things, but I'm like that for a reason. You started in on me before I even said a word to you back when we first met, so I acted the way you needed me to act to keep you in line. If you hadn't walked around like you had a wand up your ass, maybe things would've been different. [Maybe.]

[Now see, if Draco were a civilized adult who could clearly express his feelings and thoughts about his childhood to someone like Ron, he'd be more than happy to explain that his behavior was because of his father's prejudice of the Weasleys and because he was jealous Ron had Harry and he didn't.

Of course, this is Draco. Draco's still getting used to being 100% honest with his best mates; like hell Weasley's going to get anything.]

I doubt it. I treated you the way you deserved to be treated. I'm not sure what's so hard about that concept.

[Gosh, Malfoy, man up.]

I've seen you treat bugs on the sole of your shoe better than you treated me and Harry that first year. And that second. And the third. You were a right prick fourth and fifth year, too. Sixth year was almost bearable, since you were off doing your bloody precious Dark Lord's bidding and leaving us well enough alone.
