[Much later at night, after Buffy had told him, Derek will find his way to the tent where Jack is being kept. He'll enter silently, crouching next to the cot where the pirate is laying.]

Jack.

"Mmmm? What's wrong?" That voice? Is one groggy, out-of-it voice.

Derek shakes his head.

"Other than you being wrapped up like a mummy? Nothing. It's Derek, Jack. How you feeling?"

Not that he's expecting a coherent answer.

"Like an apple. The squashy one on the bottom of the barrel. With the wood lice."

Not coherent; nope.

Actually looks like a pretty apt description, if you ask the hunter. Still.

"Jack. You hearing me at all?"

"Hmmmm? Aye. Hearing. With my ears, and such.



Derek?"

"Yeah. It's me."

Derek will go ahead and sit on the edge of the cot, looking the bandagess over a bit.

"Don't think you landed right, Jack."

"The landing weren't the bad part, mate. The explosion were the bad bit." Jack tries to better focus in on his visitor. "You alright?"

"A few bruises, but yeah, I'm all right."

Derek will smile a little when the pirate seems to be a little more clear in his vision.

"You're supposed to duck or jump when things go 'boom', man."

"I DID jump, Derek! Just not...not soon enough." There had been the last crewmember to see off before he had tried to salvage the Elizabeth. And that was when he'd smelled the smoke.

"Tell me: I've heard talk of monsters. Were there sightings?"

"Dunno. Been busy keeping Hornblower's ship afloat and having discussions with our favorite winged jerks in the forest. I can ask around if you want."

He'll glance at all the bandages again. "Anything working all that?"

"Hornblower's ship, eh?" The pirate grumbles and tries to get into a more comfortable position. "I don't feel much; McCoy's got me on several different kinds of hypowhatsit."

"Yeah, well, guess they needed someone not quite so keen on making their lives hell."

Derek help, but he's pretty sure, drug cocktail or not, if he touched the wrong place, Jack would definitely be feeling it. Burns are nothing to mess with.

"Probably a good idea. They going to try healing you up a little more, or are they gonna let nature take it's course?"

"Mia's been by; she's...rather amazing, actually. Felt like a cool wave washing over everything. Sort of like surfing, really..."

"...Mia?" Derek's not sure he's met Mia before.

"Healer, huh?"

"Aye; beautiful little healing-type. Could've used more of those on this mission, eh?"

"There's never enough healers. Or medics. How long before you;re back on your feet?"

"Dunno. McCoy mentioned something about a few days in the clinic and then two or three weeks to recovery. Not sure I liked the sound of that, though."

"If they can't heal it any faster, that's actually a pretty decent time. Burns are nothing to fuck with. They get infected easy."

Infection was NOT something the pirate wanted to deal with. He'd seen limbs cut off from gangrene before; not pretty.

"Aye, mate---surely there'll be some peace afforded us after we make it home."

"At least until the new feathers show, yeah."

Derek's seen infection before, and he'd have to agree; even living in a world where there's medicine readily available to take care of it if it doesn't go too far, it's still a nasty business. He's hoping Jack has the sense to at least listen to the people putting him back together enough to not risk it.

"Buffy been by recently?"

"Aye, she...I don't like her seeing me like this. She worries about me, Derek."

No one has ever worried about him in that way before. Ever.
