"...You don't really want to know, Bones. Believe me."

But her hands tightened around the handle of her slayer's scythe, resting next to her on the cot. She'd washed the blood off the stake-toting end but it was sharp enough -- and with enough force, perhaps from an Elite, it certainly would have been able to cause a wound like that.

Pinned. Pinned with her own stake.

"... I'll take your word for it."

This draft has been traumatizing enough without him hearing that story. Not that he would be able to deter her from using that weapon in the future and he starts the processing of cleaning the wound. She might not get sick, but he wasn't going to risk it or allow himself to cut corners.

"This is gonna sting."

"Do your worst. Uhm, I mean best. I mean...you know what I mean."

"... Well, I'm plenty of people would say they're synonymous of each other when you're dealing with me." A beat. "But sure, I know what you mean."

"Not so synonymous," she said warmly with only a slight hiss at the sting.

He frowned as he cleaned the wound. "It's real deep. Bastards."

"...It's their war, too. I'd give'em one deeper given half the chance. I did." A grudging respect for the other side; it's a new feeling for Buffy who was so used to fighting only monsters.

The doctor would never condone violence, but he didn't show any scorn for it either or praise her efforts. It was just something they had to do in order to survive out here and protect the people back in the enclosure -- a sad fact for a man who enlisted in a peace-keeping armada.

"What do you think they were moving?"

"Jack and I tried to get a peek at the stuff but it was a total no-go. Who knows? It could be anything."

Why doesn't it surprise him that Buffy and Jack tried to do that? He cocked an eyebrow in amusement and reached into the medical pouch around his waist.

"Wonderful."

"But what about you? I didn't have much cause to make it to the medical bay on the cargo ship. How'd things go for you?"

Her voice dropped. Grew gentler. She knew it must've been a nightmare for the doctor.

"Oh, terrific."

McCoy was surprised he made it through the journey without buckling under his own principles and using a tranquillizer to calm himself down. "I had some help dealing with it."

"Ginger? I took ginger. Lots and lots of ginger. A hint, though? Don't bite it straight off the root. That's just gross."

"It wasn't ginger."

But she was so certain that ginger was the key.

Apprehensively, she watched the Doctor's face. Anything to not pay attention to the medical mojo being worked on her leg. "Tell me, then. What's your secret?"

McCoy kept his eyes down on the work ahead and avoided her gaze. There was a possibility of the wound leaving a scar. He didn't share this information as the dermal regenerator whirled and he worked on sealing the skin back together.

"Placebo effect." He grunted unhappily and nodded to his coat, where he had kept his jar of dirt. "Check the pockets."

And a-rifling through those pockets she went. As she searched, though: "You don't need to do so much. I glue back together just fine."

The doctor smirked slightly and drawled, "I thought Faith was the one that did that. Don't tell me you're starting to take on her bad habits."

"The day I start acting like Faith is the day you have my full power-of-attorney permission to shoot me up with one of your hyposprays and lock me up until I smarten up."

She plucked the jar free from the pocket and...huh. Dirt. In a jar.

"I'll keep that in mind."

"...Why is your placebo a jar of dirt and not a package of, say, sugar pills?"

"According to Sparrow, it was supposed to keep me safe at sea. And since I didn't end up in the water when we went to get him, I'd say it did its job."

"...Enchanted?" She questioned, peering at the jar.

"Who knows?"

"Jack does, probably. If he concocted it."

Most likely it was just as Bones had called it: a placebo.
