The disturbance from the IV change is enough to wake the pirate up properly. He awakens in a bit of a panicked daze, eyes wide.

"Buffy. She's dead! She..."

"It's just a dream, Jack."

"Ah!" Slumping back against the pillow, Jack dully watched what McCoy was doing. "Seemed...seemed so real..."

"It's just a side effect of the medication. She's been coming in and out of here and she's just fine." McCoy reassures the pirate in a quiet voice and checks the bandages on his right arm, "How're you feeling?"

"She has," he breathed, relieved. "They're so real, mate."

A pause as Jack considers the question. Then: "My wings are sore, and my arm's sore where that damned needle goes in."

"You got burned pretty badly."

"Can't feel my arms. Or my.....chest. Leg." Everything felt uncomfortably numb---he experimentally poked himself in the arm, just to try for some kind of sensation.

Doctor mode activated -- McCoy grabbed his wrist and shook his head.

"Don't do that."

"McCoy? How bad is it?"

"Later. Just try and get some rest."

"Just tell me, mate." He trusts McCoy so implicitly; Jack doesn't want anything held back right now. He needs to understand this.

Part of McCoy wants to keep Jack in the dark, but what's the point? He'll find out either way, whether it be from his colleagues, or people coming to visit him, so he gives in and starts to explain the situation.

"... All right: you're suffering from second-degree burns to your chest, your arms and your left leg. I've done what I can for you, but it's gonna take a long time for them to heal. You've also sustained a nasty head injury, which is why you're having difficulty concentrating... well, more than usual." A bit of dry humour worms its way into that explanation and he smirks weakly.

"And the dreams? Why am I havin' the dreams?"

Jack's been burned very badly before--first when Beckett fired the Wench, and again when he'd been branded by that very same man. This time is different. This time, he can't feel the pain, and for that he is grateful.

"You just experienced a traumatic event." That's putting it mildly, he tells himself and bites back the scoff. "Most people have nightmares after they go through something like this. Pair that with the medication and... well."

"So they'll stop--the dreams? I won't have 'em anymore after this is all better?" This seems to be a very important point for the pirate.

McCoy was quiet, mulling over the possibility.

"We'll have to wait and see."

It suddenly strikes the injured man that there is a lack of rainbow clicking happening. "Oi---what happened to your cube, mate?"

He looks embarrassed that the other man would bring it up, but recovers quickly. "Don't need it anymore."

"Good." Jack is itching at his bandages, especially the one covering his right arm; he's unable to worry at the "P" brand, as is his custom when he's nervous or upset.

Then a horrifying thought strikes him and he tries to get a look at his belly. It can't be damaged...

"Don't scratch. You're gonna make it worse."

"I've got to see..." Breathless, the pirate tried to sit up and examine himself, pulling up the coverings.


The tattoo was safe. Relieved, he slumped backward once more.

He side-eyed the tattoo -- another one? -- and helped ease his friend back on the bed and rolled his eyes. "You're gonna have to listen to me, Jack. That's the price you pay for jumping out that goddamn death trap."

"If I hadn't jumped, I'd be seein' you in a week."

Sulky, but still very happy and relieved that his tattoo is intact.

"I hijacked that boat with Admiral Norrington's blessing, no matter what he's said on the matter."
