"They are inexperienced, yes. That is indeed the crux of the matter. I have no doubt, however, that they have sufficient experience in engaging the muscles required to lift and carry objects from points A to B and it is to that end that I have put them to work in a capacity which requires no experience whatsoever, but which is nonetheless vital to our survival."

Let it be said that it has been a hard week for Admiral Norrington.

"Are they actually being punished with a useful sort of task? Or are you going ahead and wasting our resources just to -- what? Power trip?"

"They actually are. I would expect you to know better than to think that I would jeopardize the safety of any man in the pursuit of petty vengeance."

Expect her to know better? Buffy's eyebrows rose.

"I still only just about barely know you, Admiral. And while I won't be shy about admitting that I actually kinda like you and appreciate your company, this -- the whole draft? -- this is my first and only impression of you leading. For all I know? Petty vengeance could be all she wrote when it comes to you."

She's speaking harsher than she really feels but -- ah, such was the way of Buffy Summers.

"Say that one more time and I shall have you performing a duet with Kennedy for the morale of the injured crew."

There was no way that he could, of course, and he knew it. By the this point he was merely sparring with her. His tone was no more firm, but lighter somehow.

"Please, James. We don't want to injure them further."

"Oh you need not worry. Rest assured the doctor has readied them amply for just such a performance."

"...Was that supposed to make me feel somehow more inclined to agree with you on anything?"

"I had hoped it might, yes. Is it working?"

Why did this girl feel the need to state such obvious points so very frequently?

"It is."

He did not smile, but gestured to a door behind which lay a set of steps leading clangingly into the metal belly of the ship. There was little need to escort her to the medic now, of course. Even as he grasped the handle and held the door wide for her he scanned the ship for distractions, for other demands upon his time that he might deem more pressing.
