Part of McCoy wants to keep Jack in the dark, but what's the point? He'll find out either way, whether it be from his colleagues, or people coming to visit him, so he gives in and starts to explain the situation.

"... All right: you're suffering from second-degree burns to your chest, your arms and your left leg. I've done what I can for you, but it's gonna take a long time for them to heal. You've also sustained a nasty head injury, which is why you're having difficulty concentrating... well, more than usual." A bit of dry humour worms its way into that explanation and he smirks weakly.

"And the dreams? Why am I havin' the dreams?"

Jack's been burned very badly before--first when Beckett fired the Wench, and again when he'd been branded by that very same man. This time is different. This time, he can't feel the pain, and for that he is grateful.

"You just experienced a traumatic event." That's putting it mildly, he tells himself and bites back the scoff. "Most people have nightmares after they go through something like this. Pair that with the medication and... well."

"So they'll stop--the dreams? I won't have 'em anymore after this is all better?" This seems to be a very important point for the pirate.

McCoy was quiet, mulling over the possibility.

"We'll have to wait and see."

It suddenly strikes the injured man that there is a lack of rainbow clicking happening. "Oi---what happened to your cube, mate?"

He looks embarrassed that the other man would bring it up, but recovers quickly. "Don't need it anymore."

"Good." Jack is itching at his bandages, especially the one covering his right arm; he's unable to worry at the "P" brand, as is his custom when he's nervous or upset.

Then a horrifying thought strikes him and he tries to get a look at his belly. It can't be damaged...

"Don't scratch. You're gonna make it worse."

"I've got to see..." Breathless, the pirate tried to sit up and examine himself, pulling up the coverings.


The tattoo was safe. Relieved, he slumped backward once more.

He side-eyed the tattoo -- another one? -- and helped ease his friend back on the bed and rolled his eyes. "You're gonna have to listen to me, Jack. That's the price you pay for jumping out that goddamn death trap."

"If I hadn't jumped, I'd be seein' you in a week."

Sulky, but still very happy and relieved that his tattoo is intact.

"If you hadn't hijacked that piece of junk, you wouldn't be in this mess."

"I hijacked that boat with Admiral Norrington's blessing, no matter what he's said on the matter."

"That doesn't sound right to me."

Jack says nothing. If McCoy won't believe him about the kraken, then there's no way he'll believe him about this.

McCoy sighs. He's hated every single second of this draft.

"Who knows? I climbed into a boat of my own free will, so maybe he did."

"I'm useful to him, is all. I've beaten him so many times in the past, he figured I could use some of that beatingness to beat them. Aaaand I did. Some of them. Not the last one what got the better of us in the storm, though."

"What're you talking about?"

"Norrington. I've scammed him and tricked him and beaten him, McCoy. He thought I might do the same to the Third Party and was...disappointed in that, in the end."

"... I doubt he's disappointed."

"He is most ruthlessly disappointed I assure you, McCoy. And I don't give a rat's tail about it in the end."

McCoy didn't know what else to say, so he shrugged it off.

"I'll leave the bureaucracy to people who actually give a damn about it." Which were all the wooden, official types that reminded him for Spock and could even double for the Vulcan if their ears were pointier... at least in his mind.

"Hmmph." It wasn't something Jack would be able to shrug off so easily, no matter how much he pretended it didn't bother him. The tattoo being safe was a big deal; he could cling to that bit of good luck rather than focus on all the bad.
