I... [It's a long story, reaching back far enough across the years.] Only for Archie. No one else.

[herotypical]

Hey. Don't get me wrong. I have people who I think I might forgive anything -- doesn't mean I won't be ticked off at them for it.

[captainhornblower]

I'd be angry at anyone else. [Without explanation, he knows it makes little sense, but he will not talk about Papillion or Ferrol. Not with her.] It was for my own good.

[herotypical]

You're right. It was. I don't think he's capable of acting differently. [ not when it comes to horatio, at least. buffy's heard all the fanboying. ]

[captainhornblower]

I don't think he is. He's a good man.

[A bit of cheek, sometimes, but words and deeds were two different things. He might be a bit impudent at times...

But there'd be no one else he'd rather have at his back when trouble came.]

[herotypical]

If a little...hmm -- [ should she say it? this is his best friend, after all. ] Ah, never mind.

[captainhornblower]

A little what, Miss Buffy?

[He's more curious than anything else.]

[herotypical]

Maybe it was him dating Dawnie but...hmm. [ she waffles on this. ] He's older than me, okay? But he doesn't seem it. He's got a bit of a naive streak. Don't get me wrong -- I love me an idealist. But...

[ she shrugs; not strictly comfortable sharing her concerns with horatio. ]

[captainhornblower]

Naïve...

[Horatio seems to consider the word for a moment before he shakes his head.]

I can't agree.

He... I've known him to make sure a man doesn't take himself too seriously, but I would not call him naïve.

[herotypical]

Well...[ buffy shrugs. ] You'd know him better than I would. That's just the impression I've got.

[captainhornblower]

It's...

It's Archie. [There's no better way to put it.]

[herotypical]

Beyond words, huh?

[ a bit of cheek but she seems to have fallen solemn. ]

[captainhornblower]

Something like that.

[A pause as he sorts through the thoughts.]

Naivety... is unblemished. [Another pause.] Mr. Kennedy has seen war. [And a great deal many more things I have not.] War... leaves no one who sees it unscarred.

[It's a bit romantic of a way of putting it, a habit he has generally grown out of. But, then, he is not in the habit of speaking about naivety or war in the abstract.]

[herotypical]

He's seen one kind of war. I don't see why naivety can't exist in chunks.

[captainhornblower]

Maybe it does, but I know that I would not consider him naive.

[herotypical]

...So maybe it's just culture shock, instead. [ it's a pet theory of hers. buffy's hellish home world offered such a different outlook on life. ]

[captainhornblower]

Culture shock?

[herotypical]

[ she allows herself a smile. ]

I'm a twenty-five year old woman gone weapon with the ability to bend metal and lift a man like he was made of air -- [ a throwback to her first conversation with archie. a wider smile. ] And then throw in that I'm from the future part?

Culture shock.

[captainhornblower]

[He supposes that explains the term. Sort of. Enough that he can nod as if it did, at least.]

This world has a great deal of very strange things.

[herotypical]

[ and then, gently: ] And not all of them so bad, huh?

[captainhornblower]

Not all.

[But some. Some things he is very, very glad his world does not possess.]

[herotypical]

[ but this is buffy simply trying to get a bead on whether horatio is from before or after archie's death -- after all, she sees herself in similar shoes now that giles has finally revealed his own to her. ]

I've been here for over two years, now. The silver linings somehow manage to get even more silverer. Not that the trade-offs aren't painful -- I'm not saying anything like that. This place? It's a prison. A tragedy. And it should be stopped.

[ but she wants freedom on her own terms...not waiting around for some hourglass to trickle out. ]

[captainhornblower]

[Horatio lowers his voice, at once cautious and thoughtful.]

A prison? I... suppose it is. Something like that.

But a better prison than others.

[A beat.]

The guards, though... Those...

[It's dangerous, but Jilly has spoken of Buffy as someone to be trusted.]

Those must be stopped.

[herotypical]

It's tough, huh? Caught between our keepers who want to use us and the fanatics who'd have as all perma-dead.

But I don't think it's impossible.

[captainhornblower]

Very little, I think, is impossible in this place.
