"If they can't heal it any faster, that's actually a pretty decent time. Burns are nothing to fuck with. They get infected easy."

Infection was NOT something the pirate wanted to deal with. He'd seen limbs cut off from gangrene before; not pretty.

"Aye, mate---surely there'll be some peace afforded us after we make it home."

"At least until the new feathers show, yeah."

Derek's seen infection before, and he'd have to agree; even living in a world where there's medicine readily available to take care of it if it doesn't go too far, it's still a nasty business. He's hoping Jack has the sense to at least listen to the people putting him back together enough to not risk it.

"Buffy been by recently?"

"Aye, she...I don't like her seeing me like this. She worries about me, Derek."

No one has ever worried about him in that way before. Ever.

"...You think she's the only one?"

Newsflash, Jack. You have friends here. Real ones. And real friends worry.

"I...right.




Not used to that sort of thing, Derek."

"Yeah, I know. And it can get weird when it happens. But, you know, this is what happens when people give a shit."

A slight smile.

"Enjoy it while you got it."

"I heard that angry turtle were sent home." Changing the subject from a personally uncomfortable one to one that, at least, revolved around a kind of communal discomfort. "Friends with him, were you not? Sorry, lad."

Raphael.

Derek looks to the ground, suddenly uncomfortable himself. He and Raph hadn't spoken in some time, really. Not since his infection had gotten really bad and he'd had to leave the house. The few times they'd spoken since then had ended in frustration and silence. There'd been no resolution to that.

Never would be, now.

"It happens. At least he's...back where things make sense for him."

"And how's smart, betraying turtle handling it all?" Somewhere under the total resentment of Donatello was a regret for the young turtle. They had, after all, been...well, not friends. Never friends. But allies of a sort, and drinking buddies once upon a time.

"All right, I guess. Haven't talked to him much lately. Seems to be all right for the most part though."

"Trust him, do you?" Such a casual question.

"As much as I trust you. Like family."

Casual it may or may not be, but the questioning is starting to make Derek edgy.

"Ah." And that was neither a positive nor a negative "ah"; just an acknowledgment. The pirate was forever drawing invisible lines in invisible sand. It was sometimes even more difficult to keep up with such things as shifting alliances in Luceti than it was in the constantly-shifting pirate scene back home.

But being ill and laid up as he was, Jack decided, was no time to go into that kind of issue. He'd heard Derek's word on the matter. It was good information.

Unaware as he is of Jacks thoughts, Derek is only too aware of his own, and at this point, he's ready to back off a bit. Jack's poking at things that are still unexpectedly sore.

"...should probably go and let you get some rest."

The pirate has a habit of doing that. He sinks down against the pillow that McCoy had provided him with and nods at the vampire hunter.

"I'm afraid I won't be much good to you on the waves like this, Derek Bliss."

"S'all right. Rest up and get better; the ocean will still be there when you're up to it."

Would it? Jack wasn't sure, really; it had been a desert once, not that long ago.

"Aye, mate---we've plenty of time to paddle out again once all this is over and done with."

If not here, there would be another ocean somewhere.

"And we will. Until then, try not to push yourself past the ability to heal up, all right?"

"Right---no pushing. Why should I, eh? Waited on hand and foot here, beautiful women coming in to kneel by my side and heal me? It's someone's ideal dream, really."

And it would be sweeter if things like pain and immobility weren't involved.

"Right," and Derek's smile says it all; he doesn't buy a word of Jack's first sentences.

"Vaya con Dios, Jack. I'll check with you later on."
